Netflix’s latest high-profile fantasy project has officially found a writer. It has been revealed that Jason Fuchs (Welcome to Derry, Wonder Woman) will pen the script for Amulet, a feature film adaptation of Kazu Kibuishi’s graphic novel series of the same name. Based on a story by Fuchs and Kibuishi, the film will be produced by 21 Laps’ Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen and Dan Levine, with Kibuishi serving as an executive producer.

Amulet follows a young woman who discovers a magical amulet that belonged to her great-grandfather and uses it to enter a fantastical new world. The series has spanned nine books so far, with the finale culminating in February of this year. The books have sold more than 7 million copies in the US and Canada and been translated into 23 languages worldwide. am

“I try not to write themes and morals into my stories, but I’m aware that they will show up every now and then,” Kibuishi said of the final book, Amulet: Book Nine: Waverider, in an interview with The Beat earlier this year. “What my characters say is reflective of who they are and are not always representations of what I believe. However, I do think what the characters have gone through in the story is relatable to many communities, where they feel it is now a time to rebuild. In order to rebuild, they will first need to begin by forgiving themselves. So if there is some kind of theme that people take away from this book, I hope it is that of forgiveness.’

Kibuishi had previously confirmed on social media in 2021 that an Amulet movie adaptation was in the works at Warner Bros., 20th Century Fox, and later at Disney, before the rights reverted back to him.

“I have so many side stories that just didn’t go into the book that could be great books, but I only have so much time,” Kibuishi explained during a New York Comic Con panel in 2023. “I have other series I want to do. There’s a lot of others project that probably take priority… I can’t talk much about movies related to Amulet, but it’s possible I could be working on one. And it’s possible I could be very involved in it. And it’s possible the writer and I are going through a lot of thing that I’d cut out of the story, and we’re bringing it back in.”

Celebrated concept artist Alex Ries, who has been designing creatures and aliens from  Subnautica: Below Zero to the denizens of the hollow earth in Godzilla X Kong: The New Kingdom, just launched a crowdfunding campaign for a coffee table art book, Other Worlds: The Art of Alex Ries. Besides creatures from fantastical alternate versions of Earth, many of his creations hail from deep space, so you’ll also get a look behind the curtain at films like Warriors of the Future and the worldbuilding of The Birrin Saga. Incorporating real-life animals into fantastical designs, Ries is a master of creating bizarre creatures that look like they could actually exist, because they come from a place of informed speculative biology.

Spike Trotman’s Iron Circus Comics is returning to Kickstarter to publish Other Worlds: The Art of Alex Ries, which marks the first ever collection of personal and professional artworks by Ries, featuring iconic art from Subnautica: Below Zero as well as many never-before published pieces. The 300+ page hardcover will include forewords by Jamie Beswarick and Greg Broadmore, and extensive commentary from the artist himself. Other Worlds: The Art of Alex Ries will be available via Kickstarter.

“This book is the culmination of decades of work, passing through traditional illustration, concept art and even sculpture,” Alex Ries said in a statement. “I have filled it with works that have marked important creative moments not just in my professional but personal life. This is a culmination of my life as a creative person thus far that I will be able to actually hold, and the kind of book I always loved as a child: creatures, machines, and life from other worlds.”

“With a unique imagination, a timeless sense of wonder, and a detailed grounding in reality that gives it all life, Ries’s creatures and worlds light a lasting spark within the viewer,” added Iron Circus Founder C. Spike Trotman.

Ever since his youth spent in the vast, rural expanse of South Eastern Australia, Ries has explored his sense of connection to the natural world and fascination with science. Explorations of the diversity of life on Earth, the possibilities of life beyond it, and the pressing themes of conflict and reconciliation between civilization and the natural world have come to define his work as an artist. Ries’ sublime work on Subnautica: Below Zero allowed him to use his knowledge of real-world marine life to create biologically plausible extraterrestrial creatures, while The Birrin Saga, his major personal work, explores the alien planet of Chriirah and tells the story of this world and its inhabitants.

You can see a short, exclusive preview from the book below.

Face front, true believers: Stan Lee’s The Excelsiors, one of the visionary Marvel creator’s largest initial superhero ensembles, is being developed as a graphic novel with plans for TV and film adaptations from Kartoon Studios. The studio, which is the controlling partner of Stan Lee Universe, also announced Monday that Batman franchise executive producer Michael Uslan — who collaborated with Lee on the DC Comics series Just Imagine… — is co-developing and will produce the projects.

The Excelsiors, about a team of 10 original superheroes inspired by Lee’s signature “Excelsior” catchphrase, will launch as a graphic novel through online book streaming platform Legible Comics, with concurrent development for television and film adaptations.

Kartoon announced its partnership with Legible in 2023 when the company formed Stan Lee Comics, a line of digital and print comic books based on never-before-released stories and characters created by Lee, who died at age 95 in 2018.

The Excelsiors logo courtesy of Kartoon Studios.

“Stan was incredibly proud of The Excelsiors, and he was proud to have his eponymous ‘namesake’ signature, developed by his friend and collaborator, Michael Uslan,” said Andy Heyward, Kartoon Studios CEO. “Stan took all his storytelling and character development skills, which he developed over the years at Marvel Comics, and incorporated them into The Excelsiors.”

Added Uslan, “Stan always told me that the most exciting superheroes could only meet their potential if matched by equally worthy and interesting supervillains. We expect to do Stan justice by not only having extraordinary superheroes but extraordinarily interesting supervillains. This was Stan’s baby, and I fully understand the gravity of overseeing this team to carry forth his vision. My son David, who also worked closely with Stan and myself, will help create this universe. Our north star is to write these books like Stan is looking over our shoulders.”

The Excelsiors features a team of ten original superheroes working for Amaz-Ing Tech LLC, a giant multi-national corporation in the near future, where global corporations, not governments, rule the world. They range from X-Otic, a doctor who extracted super powers from roots and plants she cultivated as a naturalist, to X-T: The only member of The Excelsiors, who is an actual extraterrestrial. (He is the great-grandson of the aliens who crash-landed near Roswell’s Area 57 in the 1960’s. He is an alien by birth, raised in utter secrecy by America’s scientists and psychologists who have tried to bring a human element to his nurturing and upbringing.)

Among the others are X-Change, a shapeshifter, X-Hale, X-Tricate, X-Isle, and X-Ecutioner, an almost uncontrollable force of human nature gone amok, controlling wind, rain, thunder, and lightning, only unleashed in last resort emergencies, and otherwise, kept in a titanium self-containment unit.

Lee co-created many of Marvel’s most famous characters, including Spider-Man, the Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, and the superhero teams the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, and the X-Men. Kartoon Studios’ portfolio includes original animated content like the Arnold Schwarzenegger-voiced Stan Lee’s Superhero Kindergarten on Kartoon Channel!, the Shaq’s Garage animated series starring Shaquille O’Neal, Rainbow Rangers, and the Netflix original animated series Llama Llama, featuring the voice of Jennifer Garner.

Spawn #1 Black, White, and Red All Over 1:10 Scale Resin Statue

Spawn, Todd McFarlane’s anti-hero from Hell, got a limited-edition 1:10 statue today, bringing to life McFarlane’s historic Spawn #1 cover artwork. Made of resin, this Spawn stands 10-inches tall and includes a hand-drawn number on its base. The statue is currently priced at $449.50, which is shockingly high, but there’s a good chance that it sells out anyway. If you want to get your hands on this, head to Entertainment Earth now.(free shipping and mint condition guarantee). You can also find it here on Amazon. It’s currently stated to arrive in April 2025.

King Spawn Movie

While we wait for the limited-edition statue to arrive, Spawn fans will also be looking forward to the new Spawn movie. Todd McFarlane has paired with Blumhouse Productions to bring us a full-length feature film based on the revitalized 2021 version of the character, King Spawn.

King Spawn takes on the larger mythos of the war between heaven and hell, as Spawn is caught up in the prophecy of King Spawn and the throne of Hell. Spawn’s creator, Todd McFarlane, has been able to combine the larger mythos of the Spawn series (the throne of Hell, God Throne, and the Dead Zones, Wanda Blake’s death) into a grand epic tale. Al Simmons/Spawn has to decide where he stands in the war between ultimate good and evil, from a position of considerable power as a leader.

Currently, Todd McFarlane has academy-award nominated writer Scott Silver as the lead on the project, promising fans that he’s taking this seriously and he wants movie-going audiences to pay attention.

Todd also wants us to know that the actors we want will be there. McFarlane said to ComicBook. “We’re bringing on A-list people. Not just one, but multiple A-list people… What they’re not going to want is to do a cheap, low-budget movie with all of these big-name people on it. That’s not why they’re signing up. They’re not looking for a big extravaganza. But, they’re also not looking for an 8 million dollar horror movie budget.

We don’t know exactly when King Spawn will release, but Jason Blum had previously stated he hoped for 2025. So if that’s true, we won’t be waiting too long. With Spawn’s New York City background and fun heroes and villains making up its cast, this film is sure to be a good time.  Warner Bros. had previously released a Spawn movie in 1997, and it did fairly well, doubling its budget and earning $88 million. Unfortunately, it wasn’t well regarded by critics or audiences. With new information and a new cinema landscape, maybe now’s the time that Spawn will reach its international audience.

The Spider-Verse and the Venomverse will collide in a Marvel event next year. One of the many announcements to come out of New York Comic Con is Spider-Verse vs. Venomverse. The only information we have on the event is a piece of teaser art with the title, which rests on a black background with spider webs. Spider-Verse vs. Venomverse kicks off in May 2025, and if we go by the name, it’ll pit characters from both the Spider-Verse and Venomverse against each other. Spider-Verse will be represented by web-slinging characters, with Venomverse featuring alternate versions of the Lethal Protector.

The original Spider-Verse was a 2014-2015 event that saw the return of Morlun, who brought his Inheritors along with him so they could eradicate every Spider hero across the multiverse. Spider-Verse is also known for introducing Spider-Gwen, who has become one of the most popular heroes in the Spider-Man corner of the Marvel Universe. Along with the Edge of Spider-Verse tie-ins, there were two sequel series, 2018’s Spider-Geddon, and 2022-2023’s End of the Spider-Verse. Sony Pictures adapted the storyline for 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse animated movie.

Venomverse was a 2017 event where several Marvel heroes were given symbiotes to help Eddie Brock fight a deadly new species called the Poisons. Just like with Spider-Verse, there were spinoffs and sequels, such as Edge of Venomverse and 2018’s Venomized, and it was also killed off in Death of the Venomverse. Marvel recently brought back the Venomverse for Venomverse Reborn, so it now has enough Venomized characters to support a war against the Spider-Verse.

There were many more Spider-Man and Venom announcements at Marvel’s Spider-Man and His Venomous Friends panel Sunday at New York Comic Con. Fans got to see a trailer for “8 Deaths of Spider-Man.” Writers Joe Kelly and Justina Ireland and artists Ed McGuinness and Gleb Melnikov are collaborating on the 10-issue story arc in Amazing Spider-Man. With Doctor Doom replacing Doctor Strange as the Sorcerer Supreme of the Marvel Universe, one of his first acts will be equipping Spider-Man with a new mystical costume and eight extra lives to combat an evil god and his scions.

Spinning out of Venom War is Eddie Brock: Carnage by Charles Soule and Jesus Saiz. As its title suggests, Eddie Brock will become the new host of the sadistic Carnage symbiote. “He’s been VENOM, he’s been ANTI-VENOM, he’s been THE KING IN BLACK…now, Eddie Brock has made his darkest bond yet as he joins with the one-and-only CARNAGE!” a description of the series reads. “Can he control his new other’s endless bloodlust? Or will he be give himself over to madness and murder?”

The Ultimate Universe has introduced Spider-Man’s most infamous clone, but not in the way you think. “The Clone Saga” from the 1990s shook up the Spider-Man mythos with the revelation that Peter Parker had a clone named Ben Reilly. To make matters worse, it was believed that Ben was the original Peter Parker, and the Peter fans had followed for decades was the clone. All that confusion was eventually straightened out, and Ben garnered a devoted fan following all his own. Factor in the existence of Kaine Parker, the Scarlet Spider, another Spider-Man clone, and you can understand why Spidey fans have strong feelings toward clones. That’s what makes what Ultimate Spider-Man just did all the more interesting.

*WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Ultimate Spider-Man #10. Continue reading at your own risk!

Ultimate Spider-Man #10 was created by Jonathan Hickman, David Messina, Matthew Wilson, and VC’s Cory Petit. The bulk of the issue is centered on Ben Parker and J. Jonah Jameson’s investigation into the buying and selling of Stane/Stark Industries. It has been secretly sold through offshore companies numerous times, with the paper trail leading back to Oscorp. When Ben and Jonah confront Gwen Stacy, wife of Harry Osborn, with what they’ve found, she cusses them out.

Ben and Jonah eventually meet with Harry and conclude that Harry has used Stane/Stark resources to fight crime as the Green Goblin. After Harry threatens them, he says that deep inside Stane/Stark are files that reveal Wilson Fisk works for The Maker, and how Maker has reshaped their world. Harry gives Ben and Jonah the information but warns that powerful people will be after them if they publish the data. It’s why Harry wears a mask, to protect his loved ones. However, the reporters aren’t putting their real names on the article. Instead, they opt for a pseudonym, a fictional newsman to throw the bad guys off the scent.

And the name they come up with is Ben Reilly.

Ben Reilly once replaced Peter Parker as Spider-Man

Miles Warren, aka the Jackal, is a villain with an obsession with Spider-Man and cloning, and is the creator of Ben Reilly. Ben was named after Uncle Ben and Aunt May, taking Ben’s first name and May’s maiden last name of Reilly. Ben showed up in Peter’s life when Aunt May became gravely sick, and the two “brothers” formed a quick bond, with Ben taking on the moniker of the blue hoodie-wearing Scarlet Spider. Norman Osborn tricked Peter and Ben into believing that Peter was the clone and Ben was the original copy. Part of the fallout was Peter leaving New York with Mary Jane, with Ben staying to fight crime as the new Spider-Man.

This was a dark time for a section of Spider-Man fans, who missed following Peter’s adventures. Marvel changed course and came up with a storyline to show that Peter was indeed the original. The truth was discovered when Ben died in Peter’s arms. Poor Ben has died and been brought back to life/cloned several times, leaving his psyche fractured. The most recent example of this turned Ben into a Spider-Man villain.

Spider-Man’s clone Ben Reilly is the new villain Chasm

chasm-ben-reilly-spider-man.jpg

The Spider-Man Beyond era saw Ben Reilly replace Peter Parker as Spider-Man once again after Peter was left injured. The Beyond Corporation had been manipulating Ben, erasing his memories and mutating him into the villainous Chasm. Ben teamed up with the X-Men villain Madelyne Pryor in the Dark Web event, where they battle the X-Men and Spider-Man in Limbo, which was also transported to New York City.

This year saw the release of Chasm: Curse of Kaine, a miniseries by writer Steve Foxe and artist Andrea Broccardo that brought Spider-Man clones Ben Reilly and Kaine Parker into conflict. “Kaine Parker is on a mission to track down his fellow clone Ben Reilly. But has becoming Chasm made Ben beyond saving? Or is there an even more menacing presence pulling his strings?” a description of the series reads. Chasm: Curse of Kaine concludes in November, so we’ll have to wait and see what happens when Ben Reilly and Kaine Parker collide.

As you can see, Ben Reilly has had quite a roller coaster of a career. He’s gone from hero to villain, back to hero, and now a villain again. And now his name has made it into the pages of Ultimate Spider-Man. Depending on how long the series lasts, there may come a day when we see Ben Reilly get to meet Peter Parker. The only question is will they be friends or foes?

We’re just days away from the blockbuster return of Eddie Brock / Venom, with Tom Hardy reprising his role as the beloved Marvel villain in this month’s Venom: The Last Dance. While it’s unclear exactly what the cinematic future holds for Hardy’s Eddie, it sounds like his comic counterpart is headed for a major change. On Saturday, Marvel Comics officially announced Eddie Brock: Carnage, a new ongoing series that will be written by Charles Soule with art by Jesus Saiz. As the title suggests, Eddie Brock: Carnage will see the former Venom, who has most recently given up his title to become the new King in Black, transform into the latest incarnation of his onetime foe, Carnage.

While we wait for Eddie Brock: Carnage, fans can turn to Venom: The Last Dance. Set after the events of 2021’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Eddie Brock and the symbiote Venom go on the run when they are hunted by both of their worlds. In addition to Hardy, the cast of The Last Dance includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Juno Temple, Rhys Ifans, Peggy Lu, Alanna Ubach, Clark Backo, Cristo Fernández, and Stephen Graham.

“These things [usually] come in threes,” Hardy explained in a previous interview with Digital Spy. “If there’s going to be a new one – and they depend heavily on the success of each individual one, so you can’t count on them ever happening again – every one has got to be as if it was the last one. But I think it’s really important, if you go into something, thinking that one, two and three are the same… the same story, the same film. So that you don’t surprise yourself by being caught out by suddenly having to do a third from nowhere. There’s got to be some continuity into a third and fourth and fifth, and if somebody says ‘no’, that’s fine. Let it go, and you move on to something else.”

As mentioned above, Eddie Brock: Carnage #1 will be available wherever comics are sold at some point in February 2025.

The next era of Marvel’s Spider-Man will begin this November, hitting the ground running with an intriguing new story titled The 8 Deaths of Spider-Man, and now Marvel has released a brand new trailer to get the hype train moving. The 8 Deaths of Spider-Man puts Spidey in a very unexpected position, as thanks to a new Sorcerer Supreme Doctor Doom, Spider-Man ends up tasked with the tall order of taking down an evil god and his scions, something that used to take everything Doctor Strange had. The new adventure is sure to be quite the rollercoaster ride, and you can find the full trailer in the video above.

With Doom as the new Sorcerer Supreme, he’s wasted no time changing things up. Part of that is to find ways to delegate things, though you wouldn’t necessarily think that defending the world from a powerful ancient threat would be one of the first things on the list. Doom sees Spider-Man as more than capable of handling the job, but he needs a power boost in order to get the job done.

That’s where the title comes in, as The 8 Lives of Spider-Man refers to Doom using his newfound power to give Spider-Man 8 extra lives in order to save the world. That leaves some room for trial and error, but we are still talking about life and death, so not that much room. Doom also gives Spidey a magic-powered upgrade with his new suit, and yet he is still technically the underdog.

As the official description reveals, fighting this threat was an annual affair for Doctor Strange, and every time it happened the battle took everything Strange had. Spider-Man has never fought this threat at all, and he’s not exactly used to magic either, so he’s not exactly starting out with an advantage, extra lives or not.

The 8 Lives of Spider-Man will pick up after Zeb Wells and John Romita Jr wrap up their run on The Amazing Spider-Man, with the new story boasting the talents of writers Joe Kelly and Justina Ireland and artists Ed McGuinness and Gleb Melnikov. The story will take place over 10 issues and will kick off in Amazing Spider-Man #61, which hits comic stores on November 13th. You can get an idea of what to expect from the official descriptions of Amazing Spider-Man #61 and #62 below.

“THE 8 DEATHS OF SPIDER-MAN BEGIN! The world has changed, Doctor Doom is Sorcerer Supreme, but he has no plans to spend his time like his predecessor. Each year, Doctor Strange would use every ounce of his power and experience to save the world from an evil god and his scions. This year, Doom is delegating this task to… SPIDER-MAN?! The leader of Latveria has given Spider-Man a new, magic-powered suit and EIGHT EXTRA LIVES with which to save the world?! True Believer, they won’t be enough…”

“THE 8 DEATHS OF SPIDER-MAN CONTINUE! Spider-Man, one death down, faces the next SCION OF CYTTORAK! That’s right, the god Spider-Man faces is the patron of JUGGERNAUT! Juggernaut is about ten times more powerful than Spider-Man with only a fraction of Cyttorak’s power! To quote a wise philosopher… Uh-oh.”

Are you excited for The 8 Deaths of Spider-Man, and what do you want to see most from Spider-Man’s next chapter? You can talk all things comics and Marvel with me on Threads and Twitter @mattaguilarcb!

There are a lot of kaiju in this world, but none of them can reach the heights of Godzilla. For decades, the atomic beast has been an icon, and their reach is only expanding. From Oscar wins to live-action comebacks, Godzilla is on a hot streak, but he is about to be challenged. After all, Mothra will demand everyone’s attention next year, and she will do so with a brand-new version of herself.

The update comes from New York Comic Con as IDW Publishing unpacked its next big titles. It was there artist Matt Frank and writer Sophie Campbell confirmed they were ready to tackle the Godzilla Universe. The pair will bring Mothra: Queen of the Monsters to life next year, and the comic will come complete with a new Mothra.

INTRODUCING THE WORLD TO MOTHRA GEMINI

“Following on March 5 is Mothra: Queen of the Monsters #1, the first issue of a five-issue limited series by writer Sophie Campbell (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), and longtime Godzilla comic artist Matt Frank (Godzilla: Rulers of Earth) for a story following time-traveling twins as they work to prevent a dark future by training a Mothra larva in the art of combat,” IDW Published describes the series.

Taking to social media, Frank was quick to address rumors about this Mothra being new or not. It turns out the artist worked with Campbell to create their own take on the mother moth. According to Frank, the comic’s monster is known as Mothra Gemini, and they are nothing short of cute. From their expansive wings to their crisp eyes, Mothra is as cute as they are powerful. We will get to learn more about this new Mothra when IDW Publishing rolls out its new comic next spring, so for now, you can read up on the title’s official synopsis below:

“Mothra has fallen after a fearsome battle with a terrifying new kaiju, Antra. Without its protector, the world has entered into a state of desolation. Kaiju roam freely, and what remains of humankind has been forced into hiding. But all hope is not lost! Mira is a young woman living in the wasteland, who believes she lost her entire family in Mothra’s final stand. That is, until her missing twin shows up at her door with two fairies! If her sister is to be believed, Mira might hold the key to the rebirth of Mothra and the Earth’s return to normalcy. They just have to travel back in time and get its egg from the Jurassic period first.”

WHAT IS NEXT FOR GODZILLA AND MOTHRA?

Clearly, Mothra is on a roll with this latest comic, and the project is very overdue. After all, Mothra has been one of Godzilla’s top allies for decades, and their recent work in the MonsterVerse has turned the moth into a legend. After appearing in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Mothra is chilling in Hollow Earth while Godzilla continues his reign topside. In 2027, Hollywood will bring the MonsterVerse back to theaters with a new feature, so fans are hopeful that Mothra will play a role.

Beyond the movies, Godzilla has plenty of comic content on the way. New York Comic Con hit up the kaiju with even more announcements including Godzilla vs America and Godzilla Heist. As for the team at DC Comics, it is also ready to pay Godzilla a visit The publisher just announced Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong 2. The sequel, which will debut in Summer 2025, will bring characters like Ghidorah and Rodan to life. And yes, Mothra will mark her presence known to the DC superheroes as well.

What do you make of Mothra: Queen of the Monsters so far? Will you be checking out the series? Give me a shout at @meganwpeters with your take! You can also let us know what you think over on X (Twitter) and Instagram.

Marvel Comics has confirmed that they’re moving to the future with Daredevil, announcing at New York Comic Con that they will publish an “Old Man Logan” style story for the man without fear officially titled Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell. According to Marvel, the series will be “Set in a Marvel Universe future on the brink of collapse, the series introduces a grizzled, older version of Matt Murdock.”

Though set in its own continuity, Marvel will be bringing in a heavy hitter for the series that will cement its place as being in the vein of that classic Wolverine tale as artist Steve McNiven will return to Marvel to draw the series. He’ll be joined by former Daredevil writer Charles Soule who will pen the series. The pair previously collaborated on Death of Wolverine and Return of Wolverine.

“I know whatever idea I write is going to be executed masterfully by Steve, and that level of trust allows you to take a lot of risks,” Soule said. “It’s been a really interesting process because the way we made it is something I wouldn’t do with an artist that I didn’t have this level of collaboration and trust with. We’ve been working on this book for four years, and that time has been well spent.”

“I started out by going why are not more people learning from Frank [Miller] and the storytelling he does,” McNiven said. “I was inspired by his work on Dark Knight Returns. To a certain degree, the structure of a 16 panel grid forces you to do different storytelling techniques.”

Marvel’s official description for Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell reads as follows: “Years into the future, a powerless Matt Murdock is no longer Daredevil, but he’s still the Man Without Fear! Doing whatever he can to help those in need in a city broken beyond repair, he’ll finally be able take the fight to where it matters most when something catastrophic happens causing his powers to miraculously return. With no one by his side, Daredevil has little chance against the evil permeating every corner until Captain America entrusts him with a mission to safeguard the world’s only hope…”

The upcoming Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell marks the latest storyline to feature an aged Matt Murdock in a far-future Marvel Universe. Previously Marvel Comics published Daredevil: End of Days by Brian Michael Bendis, David Mack, Klaus Janson, and Bill Sienkiewicz, which saw the hero dying at the hands of Bullseye and kickstarting a new mystery. The recently released Avengers: Twilight from Chip Zdarsky and Daniel Acuña also featured an older Murdock, who retired from being a super hero and became a lawyer full time (only to be assassinated by the fascist government for his work).

To put a nice bow on everything, Daredevil’s exact whereabouts in the world of Old Man Logan were never revealed in the pages of Mark Millar and Steve McNiven’s storyline, with the implication being that like all the other heroes he had died at some point. The 2018 sequel series Old Man Hawkeye revealed that Daredevil took up the moniker of his sensei, Stick, and was living in a remote location where he trained Clint Barton.

Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong is coming back for a new sequel, and the follow up is promising even more characters and kaiju will be wrapped up in the clash between superheroes, supervillains and giant monsters. Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong made its debut last Fall as fans got to see how the Monsterverse and DC Universe would collide with the unexpected crossover. With the final issue of this new collaboration between DC Comics, Legendary Comics, and Toho International releasing earlier this Spring, the team up has proven to be such a hit with comics fans that it’s coming around with a new entry.

Announced during the Jim Lee & Friends panel during the New York Comic Con 2024 convention this weekend, will be an official sequel crossover that will be making its debut on shelves some time in Spring 2025. The sequel will bring back the creative team behind the first series, writer Brian Buccellato and artist Christian Duce, and rather than Godzilla and Kong making their way into the DC Universe as seen in the first series, DC’s heroes and villains will be heading into the Monsterverse this time around instead.

DC Comics / Legendary Comics / Toho International

What to Know for Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong 2

Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong 2 will be primarily set within Legendary’s Monsterverse with teased appearances from Titans such as King Ghidorah, Rodan, and Mothra. Skull Island has been teased to be a key location for the upcoming sequel, and Suicide Squad member Killer Croc is being teased to grow to a Titan size in order to face off against the giant monsters in the sequel’s story as well. But as far as how many issues there will be or what other characters will play in the story, it’s still very much a mystery as of the time of this publication.

This is a much different kind of crossover than seen with the first miniseries as well that had the members of the Legion of Doom tap into the Titans in Legendary’s MonsterVerse. Opening a portal to that world, Godzilla, Kong, and a few of the other Titans broke their way into cities like Metropolis as Superman, Batman, and the other DC heroes tried everything they could to take on their massive new foes. It was part of Lex Luthor’s plan to finally find something strong enough to take down the Justice League, but ultimately did work out like they expected.

DC Comics / Legendary Comics / Toho International

What’s Next for the Monsterverse?

The Monsterverse has also been growing as well. The follow up to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is currently in the works for a scheduled release on March 26th, 2027. The official title for the sequel has yet to be announced as of the time of this publication, however. The last significant update outside of its release date was that I Am Mother director Grant Sputore has signed on to direct the sequel following Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire director Adam Wingard’s exit from the franchise.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings writer Dave Callaham has also been tasked to write the script for the new film, but there has yet to be a big update since the initial staff and date had been set. With so many more Toho monsters in the Godzilla franchise, and even more potential original creations from Legendary’s Monsterverse, there are all sorts of stories that could come from this increasingly massive world filled with even more giant monsters. Coupled with comics, and the sky is the limit for these stories.

DC has been busy at New York Comic-Con with a number of major announcements across its main universe line, but the Absolute Universe got some love as well, including new up-close looks and details for Absolute Green Lantern and the latest addition to the line Absolute Martian Manhunter. Bringing Absolute Martian Manhunter to life is the creative team of writer Deniz Camp (making his DC debut) and artist Javier Rodriguez and the new series will hit comic stores in March of 2025.

Martian Manhunter will join the Absolute Universe wave two lineup, which also features Absolute Flash and Absolute Green Lantern. Speaking of Green Lantern, we got more details on Absolute Green Lantern from the team of writer Al Ewing and artist Jahnoy Lindsay. Ewing revealed how Scott Snyder convinced him to join the Absolute line, and between the cover and what was said in the panel, we know that Jo, Hal, John, and Guy will all have some sort of role in the series.

“You’ve seen me when I do big stuff, I’m doing big stuff in this one… Part of the thing of this book is, you think you know what Green Lantern is. You do not know what the Green Lantern is in the Absolute Universe. First time anyone sees it, there’s a giant Green Lantern that has crushed a town. The Green Lantern in the book is an object,” Ewing said (via DCU Updates).

A Truly Different Martian Manhunter

As for Martian Manhunter, Camp took to social media and shared some behind-the-scenes details on the series and their approach, and it’s difficult not to get hyped about it. On X Camp wrote, “This is probably the most radical reinvention of the absolute line so far, and I think it’s testament to the atmosphere of creative freedom that the editors and @Ssnyder1835 have fostered on this line. He was also this books greatest champion.”

“Basically, @Ssnyder1835 and I had a 3 hour long phone call where we talked about life, our ambitions, etc. He explained what he was doing with Absolute and basically said pick any character outside of the big 5 (which were taken). The whole DCU was on the table, & I picked MMH,” Camp wrote.

“But a condition of doing the book, from the start, was working with @javiercaster. don’t get me wrong, the opportunity is amazing, the whole absolute team is so supportive, the freedom is incredible and an honor, but I think Javi is one of the great artists in comics today And have wanted to work with him for ages, and wrote him into the pitch, before anyone contacted him, or we had ever talked or met or anything,” Camp wrote. You can check out some new images from both Absolute titles in the gallery below.

DC Vertigo logo as revealed by DC Comics

Straight from New York Comic Con today, DC Comics has announced the long-awaited return of their creator-owned comics label Vertigo, this time set to be called DC Vertigo. The imprint was previously home to some of DC’s biggest comic titles of all time including the likes of Sandman, Preacher, Y: The Last Man, and Fables, and has been dormant since January of 2020 when DC began to consolidate its publishing imprints. At the time Vertigo transitioned into the DC Black Label imprint, which became where more mature and adult-oriented stores for the DC heroes were published rather than creator owned comics.

With the news of Vertigo’s return, DC Comics has also confirmed the first title that will kick off the DC Vertigo imprint, and it’s one that is already being published, The Nice House By The Sea by James Tynion IV and Alvaro Martinez Bueno. DC will publish upcoming issues of the series under the label, and republish its predecessor, The Nice House on the Lake, as a Vertigo title in the future.

What does DC Vertigo’s return mean for DC Black Label?

“It’s back,” Chris Conroy, an executive editor at DC that oversees the Black Label, Milestone, and Sandman Universe labels, wrote in a post on X referencing the Vertigo announcement. “New books to be announced. Some surprises from the archives coming as well. This is my editorial dream come true.”

Conroy confirmed on Twitter that the return of Vertigo doesn’t mean that DC Black Label is going away. In fact, Conroy revealed that the two will continue, with both publishing their own specific types of comics.

“DC Black Label continues, with some red-hot stories for DC’s superhero characters still on the way for years to come. Vertigo puts us back into the creator-owned business in a very big way. Yes, I’m running both; no, I haven’t lost my mind yet.”

DC did not confirm any other titles that would be released under the new DC Vertigo banner, but fans can almost certainly expect not only new titles but brand new editions of classic stories featuring the brand new DC Vertigo logo.

Why is DC Vertigo returning a big deal?

The original version of the Vertigo imprint was started back in 1993 by editor Karen Berger, kicking off with six titles that were already being published and which transitioned into being Vertigo titles, including: The Sandman, Hellblazer, Animal Man, Swamp Thing, Doom Patrol, and Shade, the Changing Man. These titles would become staples of the Vertigo imprint for years despite many of them originating from DC proper.

What Vertigo started as, and developed into further, was a place for weirder and more mature comic ideas to get published by a mainstream publisher. Notable creators got a major break into American comics with their work from Vertigo as well, including Garth Ennis, who penned Hellblazer and later co-created Preacher for the imprint. In addition, it was also where some creators would go to foster their original ideas having previously worked only on superhero titles for Marvel or DC, such as Brian K. Vaughan who would co-create Y: The Last Man under Vertigo and also pen Swamp Thing for the imprint.

The return of Vertigo under DC’s banner of publishing arms is a sign that they’re not only interested in telling stories that don’t immediately feature the characters they already on, but hopefully that they’re eager to foster talent in comics that hasn’t yet gotten their foot in the door at one of the two major publishers.

James Gunn is already working on the anticipated second season to Peacemaker, but that’s not the only Peacemaker project he’s working on. Today DC announced that Gunn will be a story consultant on the new five-issue series Peacemaker Presents: The Vigilante/Eagly Double Feature, which is helmed by the creative teams of Tim Seeley and Mitch Gerads (Vigilante) and Rex Ogle and Matteo Lolli (Eagly). The series ties right into the show as well, as it is set between Peacemaker seasons one and two, giving fans an idea of what is in store when the second season hits Max in 2025, though it also deals with the fallout from season one, including the disappearance of Peacemaker.

In the Vigilante story, Adrian heads to Peacemaker’s house to hang out but finds that Chris and Eagly are gone. He assumes the worst, thinking they’ve been taken, so he suits up and starts with his local criminal community to figure out where they are, and there will likely be quite a bit of bloodshed as he looks to find answers. Making this all the more ironic is that Chris and Eagly are not captured at all, but on vacation in Alaska, with Chris simply forgetting to ask Adrian along.

“I’m in my Vigilante era,” said artist Mitch Gerads on the Vigilante (without Peacemaker) half of the double feature. “I have 100 Taylor Swift friendship bracelets to trade—they’re in Vigilante colors and say ‘Vigilante S***.’ Come find me at NYCC and join the fun.”

“Awkward. Clueless. Possibly psychotic. Obsessed with destroying furniture. That’s Mitch Gerads,” said writer Tim Seeley. “Oh…wait? You mean you want me to describe Adrian Chase, Vigilante? Oh, sure. He’s the coolest dude ever and he smashes so many chicks. Also, he’s a great friend, and definitely not a serial-killing busboy. Peacemaker is lucky to call him “bro,” and Mitch and I are lucky to continue his horrifically violent adventures at DC Comics.”

On the Eagly side of things, we see things from Chris’ point of view as they vacation in Alaska. Unfortunately, things do go sideways when everyone on their plane is gassed and knocked out. When they wake up they are being hunted for sport by a mysterious group of supervillains, which is not at all what this vacation was supposed to be. Thing is, the villains don’t know what they’ve gotten into either, as none of them expected for Peacemaker to be one of the people they were hunting.

“When [DC editor] Katie Kubert asked me to do a short for DC’s Strange Love Adventures, I was stoked to write a Peacemaker story,” said writer Rex Ogle on the Eagly (and Peacemaker) half of the double feature. “So getting to dive back in and play with this iconic antihero again (and in a miniseries this time!) is a total dream. Part of what makes him so great is that at his core, Peacemaker is a hopeless optimist. He wants the world to be a better place, not just for himself, but for others. He doesn’t always go about achieving peace in the right way, but he brings an incredible levity to the violence that is already ever-present in our world. And sometimes we need to laugh at the bad—so we don’t break down and cry.”

“Bringing Peacemaker and Eagly to life in a comic is like unleashing chaos and heart on every page,” said artist Matteo Lolli. “Rex was able to both capture their funny bond and make for a perfect mix of action and humor. Drawing Peacemaker is obviously a blast, but capturing a character that doesn’t speak? Not easy. And what if this character happens to be a bird to whom nature gave by default a stern and angry look? That’s a whole other challenge, and I wasn’t sure I could deliver it without the right kind of script. Luckily for me, Rex did a fantastic job with it. It’s pure fun to see their unpredictable dynamic unleashed in this new adventure.”

“I write a ton of books and graphic novels for middle grade and young adult readers, which I love,” continued Ogle, “but there’s nothing quite like returning to my comic book roots to work on something where I can unleash my inner creative beast. Writing Christopher Smith lets me do just that—go buck wild—not just with some good ol’ fashioned violence, but with humor and unnecessary nudity. Peacemaker lets me live the dream of writing stories I wanted to read as a kid.”

Peacemaker Presents: The Vigilante/Eagly Double Feature! features a Vigilante story by writer Tim Seeley, artist Mitch Gerads, and letterer Pat Brosseau, and an Eagly story by writer Rex Ogle, artist Matteo Lolli, colorist John Kalisz, and letterer Pat Brosseau, with story consulting by James Gunn. The first issue will hit stores in March and will carry DC’s Ages 17+ content descriptor for mature readers. It will also have main covers by Gerads.

DC had several huge announcements to share during New York Comic-Con, though there is one announcement in particular that almost stole the show during the Jim Lee and Friends Panel. That’s partly because no one really thought we’d ever get a sequel to one of DC’s biggest Batman stories over the past few decades, but that’s exactly what’s happening, as Lee announced that Hush 2 is actually happening. The sequel to DC’s smash hit Hush will feature the return of Jeph Loeb, Lee, Scott Williams, and Alex Sinclair, and they even showed off some artwork from the anticipated sequel.

That artwork features a fully colored page featuring Batman gliding in the air towards an unknown objective, which we quickly learn is a group of thugs down on the street. Then we see Hush moving some pieces around a board, and the pieces are of the different Bat family heroes, including Batman and Huntress. On the second page of the artwork we see Batman descending out of the sky to take out those thugs, but as Batman keeps some of the other thugs at bay, the person he’s caught starts to have some sort of chemical reaction around his face, almost looking as if it’s melting off.

While two of the pages don’t feature colors yet, but they already look fantastic, and somehow the news gets even better. In addition to the announcement and the artwork, DC revealed that a Hush 2 prelude will be happening in the pages of the upcoming Justice League Unlimited #1, which will be hitting stores on November 27th. The actual Hush 2 storyline will begin in March 2025 with Batman #158, and the timing works out brilliantly for those who either haven’t read the original story or just want to read it again ahead of the sequel.

That’s because DC is reprinting the original Hush series as Facsimile Editions, and this will roll out starting in January 2025 with Batman #608 and Batman #609. We got more detarils on these in the latest DC Connect, and you can find the official desctipions or both below. Als of note, DC is celebrating the Hush 2 announcement with special shirts, and to get them you’ll need to scan the special DC Shop QR Code.

It’s Valentine’s Day, which means that love and heartbreak are sweeping every city in the DCU! This anthology collects eight stories of heroes and villains looking for love in the big city (which practically feels like its own character!). Lex Luthor laments over the one that got away—the big, ever-elusive Metropolitan man, Superman! Raven and Beast Boy embark on a romantic scavenger hunt across San Francisco (which just might be a trap)! And Damian Wayne runs a dating-advice gauntlet through Gotham City, organized by none other than the dating master himself, Tim Drake! Gather your gal pals, pour yourself a cosmo, and hit your nearest comic shop—DC’S LEX & THE CITY is coming this January!

DC’s Lex & the City comes just months before Lex’s next live-action cinematic appearance, with Nicholas Hoult set to portray the character in James Gunn’s Superman movie in the summer of 2025. Superman tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned. Superman, which is written and directed by Gunn, will also star David Corenswet as Clark Kent / Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen.

“I have been working out,” Hoult revealed in an interview with Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum earlier this year. “There’s that bit in All-Star Superman where he talks about his muscles being real and hard work and all that. I kind of took that as a little bit of a fuel for the fire.”

As mentioned above, DC’s Lex & the City will be released wherever comics are sold on January 29, 2025.

DC’s Absolute Batman has already been nothing short of a bonafide phenomenon, with its debut issue earning multiple print runs and a lot of conversation from fans online. Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta’s series sets out to reimagine the lore of Bruce Wayne / Batman in an entirely new context — and pretty soon, we will have even more backstory from that. On Friday, as part of DC’s January 2025 solicitations, the publisher unveiled the first details surrounding that month’s Absolute Batman #4. Written by Snyder with art by guest artist Gabriel Walta, the issue is expected to reveal even more details around Bruce’s origin story, and what ultimately led him to take up his one-man crusade against the crime of Gotham City.

Absolute Batman has established himself as an extremely large force to be reck-oned with. But how did he get to this point? How did he push himself? And how did the tragic events of his childhood, and the advice of his father, shape the man who he became…literally? Guest artist Gabriel Walta joins for this essential origin issue of Absolute Batman to explore Bruce Wayne’s past, and his inevitable future to go BIGGER. Don’t miss this pivotal issue!

As Absolute Batman #1 revealed, the inciting incident for Bruce’s career as Batman was a class field trip to the Gotham Zoo alongside his father, schoolteacher Thomas Wayne. The field trip, as it turns out, was a prize that Bruce won as a child in a student engineering competition, in which he created a collapsable bridge resembling a bat wing. When a gunman attacked the zoo, Thomas rushes Bruce and the kids into the bat exhibit, instructing his son not to open the door for any reason. Just like Earth-Prime Bruce’s situation with Joe Chill, we are not able to clearly identify the gunman, and it is implied that Thomas died in the fray.

From there, Bruce grew into a troubled teenager, but attempted to turn his life around by accepting a prestigious football scholarship. After seemingly faking an injury the first week of the season, Bruce then focused his studies on a litany of subjects, so he could return to Gotham prepared to fight for his city. As he does so, the issue also reveals that Bruce’s mother, Martha Wayne, is still very much alive and is a social worker. Given this information, it will be particularly interesting to see what Absolute Batman #4 further adds to the tapestry — whether it is just new details about his relationship with Thomas, or some insight into his self-made crusade in learning the skills necessary to become Batman.

As mentioned above, Absolute Batman #4 will be released wherever comics are sold on Wednesday, January 8th.

The world of Green Lantern has been rather busy as of late thanks to the events of DC’s Green Lantern Civil Corps Special and this week’s Green Lantern #16, but things are only going to get more complicated from here. In the newest DC Connect (#54), fans get the first details on the next big milestone for the Green Lantern franchise, which will take place in January 2025’s Green Lantern: Fractured Spectrum #1. The new one-shot will be written by Green Lantern writer Jeremy Adams and drawn by V Ken Marion, and those who pick it up will meet a new type of Lantern. These new additions are known as Fractal Lanterns, and it seems these new Lanterns are a direct result of Thaaros’ tampering with the Emotional Spectrum.

If you’ve been following along with all the chaos recently, the Green Lanterns have been dealing with the corruption and spy tactics of Thaaros, who was able to install his own people in seats of power and fool much of the cosmic authorities in the process. In his route to power, Thaaros had the Central Power Batteries destroyed, taking the power for himself and for his growing army.

Fractal Lanterns

That seems to be tied to what is being described in the new Fractured Spectrum one-shot. The description says these new Fractal Lanterns are “beings that manifest uncontrolled parts of the emotional spectrum”, and since the Central Power Batteries fulfilled that purpose, it is likely that some of that energy has started to have some rather chaotic effects across the universe.

This is likely not to affect the Green Lanterns though, as it’s been established in the pages of the main series that there was a second Power Battery located on Earth. In recent issues, Hal has worked with Jadestone (the now heroic Amazo Lantern from Absolute Power) to get all the Lanterns new rings from the new Battery, but as of now, that hasn’t happened with the other Corps, and thus we are having issues like this. Granted, that’s just a guess on my part, but it seems pretty likely, right?

You can check out two covers from the new Fractured Spectrum one-shot above and below, and you can find more details on the anticipated special in the official description below.

Aquaman is joining the list of heroes getting a new series during DC All In. The new publishing initiative spins out of Absolute Power, which concluded with several characters getting changes to how their superpowers work. While a lot of the emphasis has been put on the new Absolute Universe, the main DC Universe is also adding to its catalog. The latest issue of the DC Connect magazine revealed a new volume of Aquaman launching in January. Another tidbit that Aquaman fans will want to know is that Arthur Curry will be rocking a new powerset in the comic.

Jeremy Adams (Green Lantern, The Flash) and John Timms (Harley Quinn, Superman: Son of Kal-El) are the creative team on Aquaman. DC hasn’t said exactly what Aquaman’s new powers are, but judging from the cover and solicitation, the former King of Atlantis will be able to manipulate water. The Aquaman #1 cover by Timms shows the hero forming a sword out of water while he rides atop a hungry shark.

DC also revealed character designs for Mera, Aqualad, and “mammoth water-construct Kaijus” that Aquaman and his allies will have to deal with. A new character named Dagon will also be introduced to help Aquaman on his quest.

DC is already making great strides to relaunch the Justice League, with the team being the focus of a new Justice League Unlimited ongoing series from Mark Waid and Dan Mora. As it turns out, the team’s new era definitely is not stopping there. On Friday, as part of DC’s January 2025 solicitations and New York Comic Con 2024, the publisher officially announced Justice League: The Atom Project, a new comic from writers John Ridley and Ryan Parrott and artist Mike Perkins. As the clever subtitle suggests, The Atom Project will center on both size-changing superheroes Ray Palmer / The Atom and Ryan Choi / The Atom, as well as atomic superhero Nathaniel Adam / Captain Atom. Outside of their similar naming schemes, the trio of characters will be joined together in an effort to help DC’s various superpowered beings regain their proper powers, after things were scrambled by the destruction of the Amazos at the end of the recent event series Absolute Power.

Justice League: The Atom Project is the latest title to join the DC All In initiative, which offers an ongoing line of core titles, featuring bold new directions and jumping-on points for many characters and teams. The initiative also encompasses a reimagined “Absolute” universe of DC’s characters, which is beginning this month with Absolute Batman from Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta, Absolute Superman from Jason Aaron and Rafa Sandoval, and Absolute Wonder Woman from Kelly Thompson and Hayden Sherman.

“The creation of the Absolute Universe is how I always imagined coming back to DC, and DC All In will be a great jumping-on point for new readers as well as lapsed fans to discover new stories to love and the chance to explore the new directions in store for DC’s core series lineup,” Snyder said in a statement when the initiative was first announced.

The stakes somehow got even bigger in DC’s Green Lantern #16, which is saying something after everything that took place in the Green Lantern Civil Corps Special. The final page of that issue teased a massive cliffhanger, and that’s exactly where Green Lantern #16 begins, though if you thought the incoming planet-sized threat that is a Red Lantern-controlled Mogo would be diffused in some way, you were likely shocked by the outcome. While the Lanterns did save some of the population, Mogo’s collision with Thanagar obliterates the planet and kills billions in the process, and those ripple effects will be felt across the galaxy.

While any planet being destroyed would be significant, Mogo destroying Thanagar raises that bar considerably. Thanagar has long been one of the more important players in DC’s cosmic side of the universe, and having that completely removed from the board (or at least mostly so) will have immediate effects on characters and the world at large, especially for those who managed to survive the attack.

A Raging Planet

In the Civil Corps Special, it was revealed how Thaaros was able to manipulate the emotional spectrum and those attached to it. Thanks to experiments run on Keli Quintela and her special connection to the spectrum, Thaaros and his scientists were able to learn how to steer individuals toward other parts of the spectrum. That is how someone like Kilowog, who is the personification of Willpower, was able to be pushed into the Yellow Spectrum of Fear, leading to that confrontation between Kilowog and John Stewart at the beginning of the Civil Corps Special.

That’s also how Thaaros created his special Lanterns who can switch between the different spectrums, but in others like Kilowog, this is more like mind control, as he pushes away their normal personalities and tendencies. That’s why Kilowog didn’t respond to any sort of reasoning from Stewart, and thus the same is true of Mogo, who Thaaros had pushed into the spectrum of Rage, turning him into a Red Lantern. When he finally collides with Thanagar, it’s devastating, and we soon learn in this issue just how deadly the attack was.

A fleet of Rannian Battle Cruisers can be seen leaving the planet as the collision with Mogo is taking place in the background, and we learn that Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and Carol Ferris are aboard the ship helping to gather survivors. Carol asks how many were saved, and Hal says a thousand if they were lucky. Carol then says “A thousand…a thousand people out of how many billion…just gone…”.

John and Hal head outside to help give Carol time to get the ship in good enough shape to head towards Rann. While it takes a minute, they all manage to keep the ship intact and the survivors safe, but as Carol expresses in the issue, Thaaros has left an indelible mark on the galaxy even in his defeat, and it will continue to be a moment the universe will remember from here on out. You can find the official description for Green Lantern #16 below.

“The seeds of war have been sown, and now a massive battle rages across the galaxy! Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and Guy Gardner must race to unlock the mystery of the Dark Star resurrection, what it means for their beloved friend Kilowog, and just how to battle an entire planet! The red rage of Mogo rains down on our heroes as the Civil Corps heats up!”

Oni Press is heading into the NacelleVerse, and they have provided ComicBook with an exclusive first look at Power Lords, their upcoming comic from Dennis Culver, Matt Hotson, and V. Ken Marion. Below, you can get a first look at the variant cover by Wayne Barlowe, the Hugo-winning science fiction and fantasy illustrator best known for his decades of work in film, including on Avatar and Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy. Power Lords marks his comics cover art debut.

Power Lords originally debuted in toy stores in 1983, with designs by Barlowe. They were a kind of blend of a number of popular toy features of the era, with a fantasy-based dual identity that could be revealed by transforming the toy.

“It’s been far too long since the Power Lords were put into cryogenic suspension,” Barlowe told ComicBook in a statement. “I’m beyond excited by their auspicious reawakening and look forward to their continued adventures throughout the galaxy!”

Power Lords is the latest in a series of mostly-’80s, mostly short-lived toy lines being resurrected by Nacelle, with an eye toward helping them live up to their true potential. Almost exactly a year ago, Nacelle and Oni announced at New York Comic Con that they would be creating a universe of comic book projects based on Nacelled-owned or -licensed IP.

“This fantastic partnership with Oni Press helps us expand our storytelling capabilities in a way that we know resonates with fans – through the limitless power of comics and graphic novels,” Nacelle Founder and CEO, Brian Volk-Weiss said at the time. “Building upon the rich history of the many fan-favorite toy lines that populate the NacelleVerse and building a roadmap for fans to enter the interconnected world of our upcoming animated series, these series will be tailor-made entry point for longtime fans and new readers. Before anyone hits play on one of our series, they’ll know exactly what the events leading up to the first fade are.”

You can see Barlowe’s Power Lords cover below.

A previous comic book series was published at DC beginning at the end of 1983, as part of a broader push to make Power Lords a household name which included toys, games, puzzles, coloring books, and more.

Barlowe earned a Hugo Award and was nominated for the American Book Award for his career-defining work, Barlowe’s Guide to Extraterrestrials. Hollywood soon saw his talent and brought him on board to help shape the look and feel of various sci-fi and fantasyw orlds, including James Cameron’s Avatar, Alfonso Cuarón’s Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire, Guilermo del Toro’s Hellboy and Pacific Rim, James Wan’s Aquaman.

DC has been teasing big things for Wonder Woman #14, and it certainly delivered, as fans finally got the chance to find out Trinity’s origin story. While the birth has been talked about quite a bit leading up to this point, many weren’t sure exactly what would lead to those events. Now that the issue is out, not only do we have some of those answers, but we also get several teases that will have bigger implications for Trinity and Wonder Woman’s story down the line. We’re going to get into major spoiler territory from here, so you’ve been warned in case you haven’t read the issue.

A Shocking Death

Unfortunately, the origin of Trinity is preceded by the death of Steve Trevor, who is shot in cold blood by The Sovereign. That sets into motion a series of events that leads Wonder Woman to find Trevor in Hades, and she ultimately does, though isn’t able to bring him back. Instead, the two have a tearful but hopeful goodbye, and before Diana departs Trevor tells her about his grandmother, who is named Elizabeth Marston. Trevor says he always wanted to talk to her again, and then adds “I just think…her story’s like ours. It can’t end in death.”

With Trevor not returning to the living, we then move to another scene that shows us The Fates noticing something is missing. As it turns out, the reason why Trevor was still on that boat before his final destination in the previous scene was that Wonder Woman had actually taken some of Trevor’s thread and essence, and some of her thread was missing as well. They then realize this and signal the need for a new thread, saying “We’re going to need a brand new thread! Maybe something gold!”, which leads us to Wonder Woman on the beach.

A Golden Thread

We then see Wonder Woman holding those two threads in the palm of her hand, and she then closes her fist and holds them tightly. When she opens her hand, a singular golden thread appears, and that leads us to a beautiful scene that echoes Wonder Woman’s original origin.

Wonder Woman is then seen looking down at a baby made of clay, and as her mother once did, Diana says a prayer to once again bring that clay to life. As she puts the thread atop the baby’s forehead, she prays “Hippolyta, mother above. I beseech you now as you once beseeched Aphrodite. Grant this clay life. Let her be born into paradise, where she will be loved. Our Elizabeth Marston Prince.”

What It Means for the Future

This now solidifies that Trinity’s name of Elizabeth Marston Prince is due to her father being Steve Trevor, and that does come around full circle to Trinity’s present. In one of the previous backup stories she talks about the consequences to the current quest of trying to find her father, adding that “The Fates tend to seek a rather righteous vengeance” when you “rip through their threads of reality to satisfy your own whatever issues.”

That also seems to tie into Trinity’s three lassos, as in her first appearance Trinity says she is the first holder of the “three lassos of fate.” Two threads became a new golden thread as part of her birth, and since The Fates also knew about all of that happening, this is likely behind the ultimate creation of those three lassos.

There are still obviously some big questions, like how Trinity feels about her father overall. Sure she is looking for him, but why? Is it to bring him back from Hades, or is it to confront him about something? That one backup story does make a quick comment about not needing to find him, and she also makes a point in her introduction to say she is the daughter of Diana, not mentioning Steve at all. There’s also the fact that it seems she hasn’t met him yet in any of those previous backup stories, so that does seem to confirm that he is still dead in that time.

More will follow in subsequent issues, but the pieces are really starting to come together, and Wonder Woman #14 is an obviously huge addition to that mix. Let me know what you thought of Wonder Woman #14 on Threads and Twitter @mattaguilarcb!

MONSTERS keeps the Halloween spirit alive this month, taking two spots on our list. A rumor from the MCU brings forward a totally awesome Hulk book, and casting news keeps THE BEAUTY trending. Fortnite launches its Halloween event, teasing a lady symbiote skin that brings back a familiar cover. Speaking of familiar covers, a secret Geiger cover makes our list with a great homage. The king of the week goes to the Dark Knight, debuting in the Absolute Universe. Batman takes four spots with amazing artwork from  Nick Dragotta and Jim Lee!

Want to know what comic books are trending each week and why? COVRPRICE.COM uses live sales analytics to identify and compile the most robust market price guide, highlighting the weekly top trending comics. No opinions. Just data. Each week, they present a newly updated list of the TOP 10 COMICS trending in the aftermarket. These trends are due to rumors, fan-favorite covers, story-driven content, and content-related news.

1: ABSOLUTE BATMAN #1 – NICK DRAGOTTA – REGULAR | DC | OCTOBER 2024: This past week was the release of ABSOLUTE BATMAN, and it was an absolute killer debut! ABSOLUTE BATMAN already had a ton of hype behind it before its release. The book takes place in the Absolute Universe, a universe that was created when Darkseid allowed himself to be killed. The Absolute Universe is meant to be a darker, harder dimension for our DC heroes. The universe, created from Darkseid’s energy, is meant to introduce multiple heroes with different designs and origin stories. This book does that, as well as showing the first appearance of the Party Animals, a skull-wearing gang of murderers, and a cameo of this universe’s Joker. We tracked it at a high sale of $30 for an NM copy and a current NM raw price of $17.

2: ABSOLUTE BATMAN #1 – JIM LEE – B&W (1:100) | DC | OCTOBER 2024: Cover A may take the top spot this week, but the 1:100 retailer incentive is moving on the aftermarket, too! Usually, the higher ratio covers don’t sell as quickly due to the higher entry price… but this is Jim Lee! Lee is a legend in the comic book world, and fans of the superstar artist had no hesitation in purchasing this black-and-white beauty! We tracked it at a high sale of $150 for an NM copy and a current NM raw price of $121.

3: GEIGER #7 – GARY FRANK – MIDNIGHT NATION HOMAGE – SURPRISE | IMAGE | OCTOBER 2024: If there is one thing that collectors love, it’s a good secret variant cover! Since Ghost Machine launched its universe, GEIGER has been generating interest lately. While this isn’t a big key issue, it is a phenomenal cover by Gary Frank that pays homage to his cover to J. Michael Straczynski’s Midnight Nation. It is important to note that this secret variant cover had a massive outlier high sale of $100. It looks like it was purchased the day before the book debuted, which now averages a current NM raw price of $12. It must have come from a GEIGER mega-fan who wanted to ensure their copy of this awesome homage! We tracked 22 copies sold at a 7-day growth trend of 637%.

4: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN VOL.1 #375 | MARVEL | MARCH 1993: We’re one week away from the debut of Venom: The Last Dance, and Fortnite is releasing the symbiotes during their annual Fortnitemares event. In a competitive event called the Symbiote Cup, players can win She-Venom and Agony skins. If they are unable to win those skins during the event, they can purchase them at a later date. The Venom: The Last Dance trailer shows a variety of symbiotes, and with this information, many fans think we could see She-Venom appear again. This book is getting tons of attention because of the great cover and also the first appearance of Ann Weying (Eddie Brock’s ex-wife and She-Venom). We tracked it at a high sale of $94 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current NM raw price of $11.

5: MARK SPEARS MONSTERS #1 – MARK SPEARS – COVER B – DRIPPING BLOOD | KEENSPOT ENTERTAINMENT | SEPTEMBER 2024: MONSTERS is still trending on the aftermarket! It isn’t just the Halloween month that keeps these classic monsters going; they have been selling strong since September. The artwork on this cover is reminiscent of a different time in the horror genre. Its nostalgic pull could be why we saw this specific cover’s sales jump. After all, Dracula is a classic! We tracked it at a high sale of $41 for an NM copy and a current NM raw price of $36.

6: ABSOLUTE BATMAN #1 – NICK DRAGOTTA – FOIL | DC | OCTOBER 2024: While Cover A takes the top spot, its virgin foil cover is the next best thing to the 1:100 cover. Dragotta has illustrated a great cover, and for a small bump in price, you can add this cover to your collection. We tracked it at a high sale of $30 for an NM copy and a current NM raw price of $29.

7: THE BEAUTY #1 | IMAGE | AUGUST 2015: Evan Peters, Anthony Ramos, Jeremy Pope, and Ashton Kutcher have been set to star in FX’s new series, The Beauty. The book has received a tremendous amount of interest just based on the sheer star power alone. The casting announcement has shown fans that FX isn’t cutting any corners when it comes to this series. The casting has built up anticipation for the series, which has also translated to a big boost in the first issue’s aftermarket sales! We tracked it at a high sale of $76 for an NM copy and a current NM raw price of $38.

8: ABSOLUTE BATMAN #1 – JIM LEE – FOIL | DC | OCTOBER 2024: ABSOLUTE BATMAN hype plus the legend Jim Lee? Those two factors make for a mind-blowing and highly collectible comic book cover. While Cover A is trending, Jim Lee’s 1:100 cover and this foil cover are also top sellers. Out of all 34 covers released, it looks like Jim Lee covers and the regular covers are the ones to chase! We tracked it at a high sale of $30 for an NM copy and a current NM raw price of $22.

9: MARK SPEARS MONSTERS #1 – MARK SPEARS – COVER A – LOOKING DOWN ON YOU | KEENSPOT ENTERTAINMENT | SEPTEMBER 2024: Cover A books have been the recent trend when books have been hitting shelves. With so many variants to pick from, it seems like the regular covers are getting harder to come by. This book has even more going for it, though. MONSTERS has been doing well on the aftermarket, particularly on the covers featuring classic monsters. So why wouldn’t the cover featuring all the classics not sell well? Some other variants and homages showcase all the classics, but this one is truly terrifying. We are given the perspective of all these monsters looking down upon their victim… us! We tracked it at a high sale of $78 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current NM raw price of $28.

10: TOTALLY AWESOME HULK #1 | MARVEL | DECEMBER 2015: The rumor mill is at it again! There are a few rumors currently going around about the MCU. The first is related to Captain America: Brave New World. According to a few leakers, the film’s ending and after-credit scene are meant to tease a future World War Hulk project. The second rumor is that Ghostbusters’ Logan Kim has been cast as Amadeus Cho, a successor to Bruce Banner’s Hulk. While he first appears in AMAZING FANTASY #15, this issue marks the first time he transformed into the Hulk. Only time will tell if this issue takes off with any official announcement from the MCU! We tracked it at a high sale of $26 for a CGC 9.4 copy and a current NM raw price of $16.

A recent hit series from Image Comics just published its final issue… for now. Local Man #25, which became available at comic shops this week, is serving as the finale of Tim Seeley and Tony Fleecs’ beloved series. This finale was not announced prior to the issue’s publication, but was confirmed through a letter column from Fleecs outlining the series’ current end. Through this letter, Fleecs does confirm that he and Seeley are already working together on a new comic miniseries, and that they are open to returning to Local Man if and when they stumble upon the right story. “Until then,” Fleecs writes in part, “what could be more ‘90s Image than an unexpected, extended hiatus?”

“It’s gross to talk about the money part,” Fleecs’ letter explains in part. “That’s not the reason we made this book. MOST comics don’t even break even. But the reality of being a freelance comic creator is— You can only do books that don’t make money if you have some other money coming in. And I’m making several books right now. FERAL sells well, but Local Man takes me 3+ weeks every month and then everything else has to get done in 7 to 10 days between issues. And I’m just not talented enough to keep making good books at that pace. I guess what I’m saying is, this book was born out of fear of failure and loss, the book where we put all our feelings and pain from divorces and rejection… We just couldn’t make it work.”

In Local Man, once the star recruit of the media sensation super-team Third Gen, Jack Xaver / Crossjack had it all. But when controversy sends him crawling back to his mom and dad’s basement in the Midwest, Jack struggles to fit into a world he left far behind. And then the bodies start piling up.

The series, which first launched in February of 2023, has served as an homage to (and at times, crossover with) Image’s various superhero books, particularly riffing on the 1990s aesthetic and tropes. Prior to this finale, it spanned a total of fourteen main issues and two themed specials, Local Man: Gold and Local Man: Bad Girls.

Local Man #25 jumped one year into the future (paying homage to the “Images of Tomorrow” initiative that some of the publisher’s books have previously used) to show the new status quo for Jack and his friends and family. After fighting in the generational battle between his former superhero team and a newer crop of heroes, Jack decides to find a new purpose as an art teacher. The issue ends with Jack speaking to his students about the power of art, all while his dog Pepper — who accidentally absorbed immortal galaxy-spanning powers in the series’ previous arc — galavants through a dimension showing a collage of previous Image titles.

“What you use is less important than why you make it,” Jack’s monologue reads in part. “I make things because I want to give part of myself to everyone else. I’m trying to show people my world. I want to invite them in, even just for a little while… Into my universe.”

Local Man #25 is now available wherever comics are sold.

There are many reasons that American comics readers should know Garth Ennis, from his long run on Marvel’s The Punisher to his iconic Vertigo Comics series Preacher, to his more recently adapted hit The Boys. However, those who know Ennis best know him also as a writer of war comics, such as War Stories  his Battlefields series at Dynamite Entertainment, or his graphic novel Sara at TKO Studios. He’s even infused that influence into his work at Marvel on characters like Nick Fury, most recently in the Vietnam War-set Marvel MAX series Get Fury, co-starring a pre-Punisher-transformation Frank Castle.

More recently, Ennis’ talents as a teller of war tales have served him well while writing stories appearing in British comics anthologies Battle Action and 2000 AD from Rebellion Publishing. In Battle Action, Ennis revived the character Johnny Red, a British fighter pilot leading a Russian Squadron during World War II, leading into the story of Johnny’s final flight. In 2000 AD, Ennis is penning stories featuring Rogue Trooper, the next 2000 AD character set to appear in a film, blending the genre line between war stories and sci-fi.

ComicBook had the opportunity to ask Ennis questions about transitioning from American comics to these storied British magazines, including what he has in store for this year’s 2000 AD Christmas issue. Here’s what he had to say:

Credit: Rebellion Publishing

After many years working with US-based publishers, you’ve been doing work for Rebellion for a while now. How has your experience working with Rebellion and on anthologies rather than ~20-page American monthly serials been? Has there been an re-adjustment period at all?

Garth Ennis: Not really, stories are stories. So long as there are competent people at editorial I’m happy to work for anyone, and Oliver Pickles and Matt Smith are among the best I’ve worked with.

I do enjoy the shorter episodes on Battle Action and 2000 AD– less space means more focus, and it’s nice to exercise that particular muscle again. That doesn’t mean I don’t write with the eventual collection in mind- that’s how stories like Rogue Trooper and Johnny Red are going to exist long-term, after all- but there’s still a particular pleasure to be found writing one-offs like Dredger, Hellman, or Strontium Dog/Robo Hunter.

Credit: rebellion Publishing

You’ve been writing Rogue Trooper stories in 2000 AD and Johnny Red stories in Battle Action. Both fall into the “war comics” genre, of which you’re considered a master by many, but Rogue and Johnny are very different beasts, the former being sci-fi, and the latter rooted in real history. Have you found they offer unique storytelling opportunities or challenges compared to your other work in the genre? Is there any thematic commonality between them?

Not much beyond the fact that they’re both war stories. Johnny Red has its roots in actual history, as you say, whereas Rogue Trooper is out-and-out science fiction. The latter takes care of itself, with the broad parameters of the strip having been laid down a good forty years ago.

With Johnny Red the hyperbole of ’70s comics means the story is one step removed from my usual war stories; things like Sara or The Stringbags don’t ask the reader to believe in anything that didn’t happen. But there was never an Englishman in command of a Russian fighter squadron, and even if there was, someone with Johnny Redburn’s attitude would have been shot dead by the Soviet authorities inside a couple of weeks.

There’s also a larger-than-life quality to the original strip, with people and aircraft able to do things they simply couldn’t have. What I find interesting is that the old Johnny Red stories got so much right, in terms of setting and events, and finding ways of making the unreal a little more believable in that context is one of the things that keeps me engaged.

Credit: rebellion Publishing

Your current Johnny Red story in Battle Action is being billed as the final Johnny Red story. Given that this is comics, I have to ask what “final” means in this context, but also, what does it mean to you, as a writer, to give such a long-running character that ending?

In the one sense it means nothing; if the strip suddenly became insanely popular, with Hollywood interest and resulting franchise possibilities, then you’d be seeing more material from now ’til doomsday (although a look in my crystal ball tells me this is unlikely). But so long as I have an opportunity to finish the story out in the style I think it deserves, I’ll take it – Johnny Red was my favorite character for a couple of years’ running when I was a kid, and I think some of what Tom Tully, Joe Colquhoun and John Cooper achieved (in what was essentially a boys’ war comic) was extremely impressive.

That said, the second half of that run fell far short of the first, and the actual conclusion – not even written by Tully – was fairly feeble stuff. When I consider how exceptional Johnny Red was in its heyday and how much it meant to myself and so many other readers, I feel the need to give it a proper ending. A good story is a precious thing, and needs to be treated with due care and respect.

Credit: rebellion Publishing

Your current Rogue Trooper story in 2000 AD, “When a GI Dies,” follows your previous story with Patrick Goddard, “Blighty Valley.” What can readers expect from this new Rogue story, and are there any thematic connections between this and last year’s story?

It’s much more specific to the original Rogue Trooper strip, rather than the notion of considering conflict in a wider sense that you saw in “Blighty Valley.” The new one looks at the origins of the Genetic Infantry regiment, their engineering- including the biochips and the implications thereof- and the people on Milli-Com who sent them into combat. It also considers the Dolls, and what they were left with once the dust had settled on the Quartz Zone massacre.

Credit: rebellion Publishing

“When a GI Dies” is also a sequel to the classic 1984 Rogue Trooper story “You Only Die Twice.” What made you want to revisit that tale?

It’s one of my all-time favourite Rogue Trooper stories, one of the very best from the classic run- I’d put it up there with “The Marauders,” “Fort Neuro,” “Eye of the Traitor,” etc. Superb Cam Kennedy art on an action-packed story in which the status quo is suddenly turned upside-down- there’s a death and a return, a terrible betrayal, and all sorts of dark hints about what might be going on back on Milli-Com. But having set all this up and then given us so many questions to ponder, the conclusion – epic though it is – gives us precious few answers, and there are no long-term implications as the strip continues, it’s almost as if the events hadn’t happened.

I’ve been thinking about it all these years, largely because it’s so powerful, and I eventually decided that I could get a pretty decent story by coming up with answers of my own.

Credit: rebellion Publishing

We’ve also just found out that you’re working with Henry Flint on a Strontium Dog story this Christmas. Can you offer any hints as to what that’s about?”

“Doghouse Roses” sees a pair of mutant civilians from Milton Keynes visiting the base of the Search/Destroy Agency, intent on making a fly-on-the-wall documentary about their Strontium Dog heroes. You’ll see all the old favourites- Johnny & Wulf, obviously, but also Middenface, the Torso from Newcastle, Evans the Fist, Spud Murphy, the Stixes and more- but from a point of view that may seem a little unfamiliar.

There’ll also be some odd goings-on in the showers, a CUR prisoner we’d all like to see the back of, and a brief discussion on the future of the ancient English county of Durham. Oh my poor heartses, etc etc.

And Henry is, of course, knocking it out of the park.

A preview of Marvel’s new Iron Man series pits the Armored Avenger against a pair of Hulk bros. Pulitzer prize-winner Spencer Ackerman and artist Julius Ohta are taking the reins of the new volume of Iron Man, which finds Tony Stark back in control of his company Stark Unlimited. However, after the anti-mutant Feilong used Stark Unlimited to create mutant-hunting Stark Sentinels, Iron Man has a lot of work ahead of him to clean up the mess. The opening arc of Iron Man begins with “The Stark-Roxxon War,” and the story is coming out the gates hot with Hulk Bros looking to stomp out union workers.

ComicBook has the exclusive preview of Iron Man #1 by Spencer Ackerman and Julius Ohta. It takes readers to a Stark Unlimited plant in upstate New York, where two guards have locked the workers outside the gate. When the workers threaten to gather in the parking lot, the guards transform into Hulk-sized mutates to threaten them. Iron Man eventually shows up to put a stop to the Hulk Bros before a union worker gives Tony Stark a tour of the facility.

The union wants a say in the type of weapons they’re making for Stark Unlimited, and Tony agrees their input should be considered. Before he flies off as Iron Man, Tony accepts the terms and promises to let his actions speak for themselves.

Ackerman and Ohta are also debuting the new “Improvised Iron Man,” and we asked the Pulitzer Prize winner what that means.

“It so happens that right before this interview, I was rereading Hickman & Epting’s New Avengers #5. There’s a panel showing Iron Man down on the ground, gauntlet repulsor sparking from malfunction, and preparing to defend himself from the terrifying scythe of Terrax the Tamer from an alternate universe. He’s wearing a great armor, one that looks sturdy and futuristic, part of the visual lineage established by Adi Granov in Extremis that has been deservedly hegemonic for something like 20 years,” Ackerman told ComicBook.

“I wanted to break from that tradition. If Terrax brought that scythe down on the Improvised Iron Man, our hero wouldn’t be in New Avengers #6. Julius Ohta’s masterful armor design also addresses your last question. The Improvised Iron Man showcases vulnerability and desperation. This is something a very smart person makes when all else has failed and what comes next can’t. He’s not in a cave, but he is building it out of scraps. It’s ‘Improvised’ in the sense of ‘Improvised Explosive Device.’ And it’s going to include a key visual and tactical element that we rarely, if ever, see with Iron Man armor. That’s debuting in Issue #2.”

Julius Ohta’s armor designs for Iron Man and Iron Monger in Iron Man (2024).

Ackerman concluded with a tease of what’s to come: “And because he’s Iron Man, he’s going to iterate on the Improvised armor. A lot. And as circumstances are going to very rapidly require.”

The previous Iron Man volume saw Tony Stark working together with the X-Men to stop the anti-mutant organization Orchis. Part of their plan involved Tony marrying Emma Frost, who used a secret identity to stay under the radar. With Orchis defeated, Iron Man relocated to California and is a founding member of a new West Coast Avengers team with War Machine. Their new mission statement is to help reformed villains make new lives for themselves, and one of their first recruits is a seemingly reformed Ultron. Spider-Woman and Firestar are also part of the West Coast Avengers.

Iron Man #1 goes on sale Wednesday, October 23rd.

Marvel's new Wolverine.

Ultimate Wolverine is coming up and the new version of Logan has an unexpected origin. For those who have been keeping up with the Ultimate Universe line of Marvel Comics know this corner of the multiverse delights in remixing elements of classic characters. At New York Comic-Con, Marvel revealed that Ultimate Wolverine is turning Logan into The Winter Soldier. The new Ultimate Universe book hits shelves in January of 2025.  Chris Condon is writing the title for Marvel Comics with art from Alessandro Cappuccio. Variant covers are being made by Gleb Melnikov and Steve Skroce. It seems like The Maker is calling in the big guns to help stymie The Ultimates as they continue to find classic heroes to aid their cause. It’s getting more interesting by the month over in the Ultimate Universe corner of Marvel.

Here’s what the publisher has to say about the upcoming title: “From rising star Chris Condon (That Texas Blood) and MOON KNIGHT powerhouse artist Alessandro Cappuccio comes the story of the ULTIMATE WOLVERINE! In order to maintain control of their corner of the Maker’s world, three members of his council – Magik, Colossus and Omega Red – deploy their most lethal asset: The Winter Soldier!  But WHO is the weapon behind the mask?

A while ago, when Jonathan Hickman returned to the playground he helped make one of the most-talked about books in the comics sphere, the creator had to explain why Marvel was trying to revive the Ultimate line. A couple of the concepts from the old version of this universe persisted through his Secret Wars event with Marvel. (Miles Morales, The Maker and some other small additions made it off of the “life raft” to the main 616 continuity.) A ton of it was cast off to the sidelines though. Why bring it back in the 2020s, so long after people who grew up with The Ultimates might have moved on? Well, in his words, it was time for the comics to do the same thing the Ultimate Universe did for the early aughts for the current era.

What made the Ultimate Universe originally really interesting was that it was a reflection of the world outside your window, in the moment that you were living in. What does it look like in the world we’re living in now?” Hickman said to Marvel. “It’s kind of shocking how much the world has changed in that period of time. The idea of what it would be like to see the genesis of Super Heroes in a brand new world is a really fascinating exercise.”

Hitch would chime-in, “You don’t ever have to have read any of the Ultimate Universe to enjoy this. There’s some great comics in there, but this doesn’t need you to be familiar with that stuff. You just need to get in on page one and enjoy this because the story takes you where you need to go.”

Does this new title sound awesome to you? Who do you think the new Ultimate Wolverine is? Check out all the conversation at @ComicBook!

Doctor Doom is headling a Marvel event in 2025 that sees the current Sorcerer Supreme become Emperor Doom. For those who haven’t been keeping track at home, Doctor Strange is no longer the Sorcerer Supreme of the Marvel Universe. Doctor Doom stole the mantle from Strange during Blood Hunt, and while we know “One World Under Doom” is upon us, we now have an idea of what that looks like. The Rise of Emperor Doom is an upcoming five-issue limited series where Doom takes control over all broadcast systems on the planet, causing Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to respond.

The Rise of Emperor Doom is written by Ryan North (Fantastic Four) with art by R.B. Silva (Rise of the Powers of X). Doctor Doom has kept a low profile since becoming Sorcerer Supreme, but all that changes in February 2025 when Doom declares himself Emperor of the World. Surprisingly, Earth’s leaders seem to be going along with this change in leadership. Our heroes send a strike team into Latveria to investigate, and while some are wary of Doom, others seem to be coming around to his way of thinking.

ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM!
Six months ago, Doctor Victor Von Doom became Sorcerer Supreme – then disappeared behind Latveria’s closed borders. For most, there’s enough going on in the world that Doom’s absence is not a priority, and some time without him feels like a blessing. Only a few recognize it for what it truly was… the calm before the storm. It is a storm that has now arrived. The world has woken up to a new reality: Doctor Doom, Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme, has magically taken over every broadcast medium on the planet and declared himself Emperor of the World – the ruler of a new United Latveria! And shockingly, impossibly, all of Earth’s leaders seem to be going along with this. Luckily, whether it’s mind control or Doombots, whatever’s affecting them hasn’t affected Earth’s heroes – and so they quickly form a strike team to stop Doom’s machinations. But will they succeed? And what happens when some begin to welcome their new Emperor with open arms, clamoring for One World Under Doom? Marvel’s biggest and most shocking event ever begins right here, with THE RISE OF EMPEROR DOOM #1.

Blood Hunt was a Marvel event featuring a vampire uprising led by Blade, who was possessed by the first vampire, Varnae. Doctor Strange was one of the first casualties of Blood Hunt, with Blade turning Strange into a vampire at the end of the first issue. Strange (in astral form) and Clea traveled to Latveria to ask Doom for assistance in stopping the vampires. Doom obliged by helping to unblock the sun from the Dark Dimension, but he required the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme to complete the spell. Doom gave Strange his word that he’d relinquish the Sorcerer Supreme mantle once he was done, but then went back on his word.

Marvel’s emphasis on Doctor Doom is possibly tied to his upcoming debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Russo Bros. were announced as the directors of Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars at San Diego Comic Con, with Robert Downey Jr. returning to the MCU as Doctor Doom. How all of that will work since audiences only know Downey as Iron Man remains to be seen, but the multiverse will most likely explain the switcheroo.

How excited are you for The Rise of Emperor Doom next year? Make sure to let us know your thoughts on social media @ComicBook!

Agatha All Along is ramping things up in some major ways, fleshing out the magical corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the process. In addition to continuing the story of Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn), the show has folded in Billy Maximoff / Wiccan (Joe Locke), whose identity was revealed with great fanfare in the final moments of Episode 5. The majority of the series’ sixth episode consists of a flashback to the origin of Billy’s current status quo — and it was actually surprisingly accurate to the pages of Marvel Comics. Major spoilers for Episode 6 of Agatha All Along below! Only look if you want to know!

Initially, Locke’s version of Billy is introduced as Billy Kaplan, a Jewish teenager having his bar mitzvah in the town of Eastview. While at the party, Billy has his palm read by Lilia Calderu (Patti Lupone), who warns him that his life is about to be split in two, and appears to place a mysterious sigil on him. The party is then cut short by news of the Westview anomaly, which sends Billy and his parents driving home in a hurry — so much so that they crash into a nearby tree. Billy dies in the car accident, just as the souls of Billy and Tommy Maximoff appear to be erased by the destruction of the Westview hex.

In reality, the soul of Billy Maximoff is reborn into Billy Kaplan’s body, and he awakens and gets acclimated to his new-old life. Three years later, Billy begins to personally investigate the circumstances that led to his rebirth, researching aspects of the Westview anomaly on various web forums. Through this research, and a clandestine meeting with Ralph Bohner (Evan Peters), Billy eventually begins to discover his true identity — and the role that Agatha Harkness could have in helping him reach his goal to find Tommy.

While this story arc might seem slightly convoluted on paper, it is actually surprisingly reminiscent of how Billy Kaplan is introduced in the pages of Marvel Comics — albeit, without the WandaVision tropes like the hex. In the comics, Billy and Tommy Maximoff were originally introduced as Wanda and Vision’s children in the 1980s, only to have their lives ended prematurely by the dark lord Mephisto. The villain wiped both Billy and Tommy from existence and absorbed their energy into himself, later gaslighting Wanda to believe that the children were really figments of her imagination all along.

Eventually, this is revealed to not be the case at all — in actuality, Billy and Tommy were believed to have been reborn in the bodies of two ordinary teenagers, Billy Kaplan and Thomas Shepherd. In Billy’s case, in the pages of Young Avengers, he is an ordinary Jewish teenager who accidentally activates his powers while fighting school bullies. There have been debates in the years since over whether or not that reincarnation was real, much less what happened to the actual Billy Kaplan and Thomas Shepherd when the soul transfers happened. But the majority of Marvel characters recognize these versions of Billy and Tommy to be Wanda’s children — and now, it appears the MCU is doing the same.

Fans of DC Comics received an unexpected surprise a few weeks back when there was a small banner on the lower third of the screen during AEW Dynamite, which was advertising DC’s All In Special #1. That’s obviously a big deal, but tonight DC and AEW took that up several notches, with DC superheroes from the main universe and the recently launched Absolute Universe being featured across all of the barricades around the ring (which you can see right here). Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman from both universes were included, and things got even better when a commercial for DC’s All In initiative and Absolute Universe played during the show as well.

The classic DC blue made the barricades around the ring pop, as did the main universe and absolute character designs for Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman. Then during the Mercedes Mone vs Queen Aminata match for the TBS Championship, AEW played a commercial for DC’s All In, though the video really leaned into the Absolute Universe as well.

The commercial featured more detailed looks and full motion graphics for Absolute Batman, and then previewed the upcoming Absolute Wonder Woman and Absolute Superman. A commercial just showing the DC logo and maybe some covers would have been noteworthy, but the fact that AEW shined a light on All In and several of the highly anticipated Absolute titles really gives this showcase some impact.

Witch Wonder Woman

Part of the fun of the Absolute Universe is that creators can take some big risks with DC’s iconic heroes, and that especially goes for Wonder Woman. Absolute Wonder Woman features writer Kelly Thompson and artist Hayden Sherman at the helm, and they are going for it in a huge way, as this new iteration of Wonder Woman has survived the pits of hell, rides a skeletal Pegasus, and can wield magic. Suffice it to say, this isn’t the Wonder Woman you know. In an interview with Thompson and Sherman, Thompson explained how Wonder Woman’s magic works and how they approached bringing this element into the fold.

”I think I always try to approach magic as magic has a price. I think this Wonder Woman is a little bit more Batman because of the magic. Like, a lot of magic that she’s doing is stuff she’s got in that pouch that’s pre-prepared. Like, I can use this to do that or the other, so it’s a little bit more she’s got some Batman tricks because of her different bag of tricks she’s playing with, quite literally. We gave her a magical pouch that has infinite space or connects to a portal or, you know, like a pocket dimension that she can reach into or whatever we want to call it,” Thompson said.

Thompson also eased any fears that Wonder Woman’s ability to wield magic will make her overpowered. “I will say that while the magic of Wonder Woman, I haven’t really seen people saying this, so I probably shouldn’t bring it up and raise this issue, but I was worried people would think she was just going to be so dramatically overpowered, but I would say there are limitations to the magic,” Thompson said. “She pays prices for that sometimes. It’s nothing unlimited. She’s also not a master magician. Like, she’s a witch, and she can do a lot of this stuff. She was raised in it, but she’s not, that’s not her primary skill set. Her primary skill set is still more Wonder Woman-based.”

DC did just give AEW stars like Swerve Strickland, Darby Allin, and Britt Baker their own mini-comics, so perhaps we’ll get some Absolute versions at some point down the line. We’ll just have to wait and see, but you can talk all things wrestling and comics with me on Threads and Twitter @mattaguilarcb!

It’s been four years since Roy Miranda and Inaki Miranda launched the Eisner-nominated series We Live, the Miranda Brothers are back with a brand new series from Mad Cave Studios, and we’ve got your exclusive first look and details! The new series is titled Blade Forger, and presents the question of what happens when utopia is born from necessity and asks can one person change the world. It would seem that in this world, the answer is absolutely yes, as powerful swordsmen known as Blade Forgers have the chance to become the emperor of this world every five years. Fans will get to see how this next epic clash goes down in the new series, which is perfect for fans of Game of Thrones, One Piece, and Elden Ring, and features the team of Roy and Inaki Miranda, colorist Eva De La Cruz, and letterer Dave Sharpe.

The series follows the journey of a young Blade Forger named Owada, who has the opportunity to assume the role of Emperor if he can defeat the current Emperor in The Tournament of the Five Rings, which is held every five years. This is to ensure the upkeep of the Blade Forgers Treaty, which keeps the different nations of the world from going to war over the energy source Corum. You can find the official description below.

“The discovery of CORUM, a never-before-seen energy source, led to a bloody world war for its control. These wars, and the devastation they caused, would lead to the BLADE FORGERS TREATY. The treaty was simple: Control of Corum would be given to a neutral Emperor.

The appointment of the Emperor would be anything but simple, however. The Emperor would be a BLADE FORGER, a mystical, powerful swordsman capable of controlling powerful spirits known as BATTLE KAISERS. The Emperor would have to defend their title every five years in The Tournament of the Five Rings. Blade Forgers from near and far come together to challenge the existing authority and for the chance to overcome the Emperor and take their crown. A young Blade Forger named Owada challenges the Emperor in the name of the forsaken people. This is the story of what happens next.”

A New World and One on Hold

“Blade Forger was born from two crises; both imposed and unexpected. The first was having to abandon (temporarily, we hope) our WE LIVE story halfway through, despite its success. We had to shut down a universe and characters that were already part of our lives and with whom we had come to build a dream. That’s not easy to assimilate,” the Miranda Brothers said in a joint statement.

“The second was the world energy crisis resulting from the war between Russia and Ukraine. For months there were warnings in Europe about the possibility of energy supplies not reaching homes. We talked about the fear and helplessness that arises when a basic commodity cannot reach everyone, knowing that what will happen is only under the control of large corporations. And the consequences: something as simple as a family not being able to afford heating in winter. The question that triggered the idea was: could energy become a common good for all? All the pieces fell into place in a magical way. The entire Mad Cave team absorbed our enthusiasm and multiplied it by 100. We promised we’d be back! And as Blade Forger’s slogan says: a promise is a promise.”

“Blade Forger is for those of us who grew up watching Digimon and One Piece, and playing Mortal Kombat and Final Fantasy X,” said Mad Cave Studios Editor, Christina Harrington. “It’s a mature, fun, fighting-filled adventure where we see warriors known as Blade Forgers summon powerful fighting spirits called Battle Kaisers from a world beyond their own, as they compete in bombastic spectacles in a race to become the next Emperor–all of this, of course, told with the grounded, emotionally-charged storytelling we’ve come to love from the Miranda brothers.”

Blade Forger will hit comic stores on March 5th, 2025.

Emperor Palpatine's Contingency begins in Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku - Insurgency Rising #2.

Almost immediately after Emperor Palpatine’s death and the Galactic Empire’s defeat at the Battle of Endor in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, the Sith Lord issued a message from beyond the grave: “Operation: Cinder is to begin at once. Resistance. Rebellion. Defiance. These are concepts that cannot be allowed to persist,” Darth Sidious told the remnants of his Empire. “You are but one of many tools by which these ideas shall be burned away. “

The words that initiated Operation: Cinder in 2017’s Star Wars Battlefront II video game were echoed in Marvel’s Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku — Insurgency Rising #2, this time from aboard the Super Star Destroyer Ravager. Palpatine entrusted the warship — and his Contingency plan — to Admiral Gallius Rax in the 2017 canon novel Star Wars: Aftermath: Empire’s End, and Rax oversees the launch of Operation: Cinder in Insurgency Rising #2.

Grand Admiral Rae Sloane confirms that orbital bombings have begun on the targeted planets Candovant, Abednedo, Commenor, and Burnin Konn in the Anoat sector, which has been cut off from the rest of the galaxy: the Imperial Grand Moff Ubrik Adelhard has created an Iron Blockade around the entire sector.

Adelhard, who appeared in the canon video game Star Wars: Uprising and is mentioned in Aftermath, cordoned off this section of the galaxy to keep the citizens of the Anoat sector in the dark about the Emperor’s fate and the Rebel Alliance’s victory over the Empire at the Battle of Endor. “As long as I live, the Empire lives,” Adelhard tells captured Rebel pilots on the Anoat sector planet Darlyn Boda. “As long as I wield power, the Empire’s flame continues to burn.”

Adelhard’s Imperials are loyal to the Empire, not the Emperor. Palpatine’s protégé, Rax, is dedicated to fulfilling the Emperor’s Contingency and burning down the Empire so that Darth Sidious’ Sith cultists can establish the Final Order (as seen in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker) under the resurrected Palpatine.

As the Sith Lord recorded in The Secrets of the Sith book: “If the vast and powerful forces I had gathered could not perform their sworn duty and protect their own Emperor, they did not deserve to lay claim to this galaxy in my absence. For their failures, I would see them burn. And the galaxy along with them. With the Empire erased from existence, something new could rise in its place. And from beyond the grave, I would control its every move…”

Meanwhile, on Chandrila, provisional home of the nascent New Republic, Agent Behrens reports to Princess Leia Organa and Rebel Alliance leader Mon Mothma. “The Empire has not fallen,” Behrens says. “The war continues.” Facing offensives from two Imperial factions that might not be aligned, Leia orders Behrens to put together a team of the Republic’s remaining forces in the Anoat sector to engage Adelhard — or die trying.

They are: B-wing starfighter pilot Rynn Zenat; the mechanic Jarek Yeager (as seen on the animated series Star Wars Resistance); trusted intelligence operative Therisa Alern; and Kes Dameron of the Pathfinders, father of future Resistance pilot Poe Dameron (played by Oscar Isaac in the Star Wars sequel trilogy).

Meanwhile, Zeva Bliss — leader of the Spice Runners of Kijimi and the mother of Zorii Bliss (Keri Russell) in The Rise of Skywalker — looks to take advantage of the unrest by fomenting chaos in the galaxy and consolidate power in the underworld. On the planet Pillio, Luke Skywalker is ambushed by Yupe Tashu’s Acolytes of the Beyond, who seek to reclaim a Jedi relic: a Jedi star compass, which called out to Luke through the Force.

The compass will eventually lead Luke to Ossus — where he constructed a new Jedi Temple, as seen on Star Wars: The Mandalorian — and Ahch-To, site of the First Jedi Temple, where Luke will go into exile during the time of the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku — Insurgency Rising #2 is on sale now from Marvel Comics. After issue #4 in November, The Battle of Jakku trilogy continues in Republic Under Seige and then Last Stand.

DC's Wonder Woman 14 Comic Cover By Daniel Sampere

DC’s Wonder Woman comic series is generating some trending buzz this week, following the release of Wonder Woman #14. Writer Tom King’s current run on Wonder Woman has sparked a fair amount of backlash since it began, but issue #14 was (as promised) a major pivotal chapter of the story, which revealed a major death, as well as the origin story that DC fans have been waiting for since King started mapping out the future of DC’s Justice League.

WARNING: SPOILERS FOLLOW!

Wonder Woman #14 tells a story titled “What’s the Point of Steve Trevor?” The title is incredibly on-the-nose, as we learn through non-linear storytelling how Wonder Woman’s current nemesis, America’s “Secret King” The Sovereign, murders Steve Trevor in cold blood just to break Diana’s heart. The other part of the story sees Diana travel to the Underworld to retrieve Steve – only to ultimately fail in her mission, and return back to Earth with Steve gone and truly dead.

Through a series of circumstances that still feel like they need full explanation, Wonder Woman villain Circe and some witches working with the Sovereign spot that portions of Diana and Steve’s souls (represented as threads) have been cut out – threads Diana intertwines into a golden single thread, and uses it to seemingly make a baby fashioned out of clay into a real daughter.

DC Fans Have Very Mixed Reactions to Wonder Woman #14

The reactions to Wonder Woman #14 have been straight down the love/hate divide line. Tom King got a pretty loud earful when he simply posted a promo about the comic’s release today, calling it “a big one”:

DC/Tom King/X

The comments section of the post quickly went off, with users making posts like: “You hype this particular issue up so much and it ended up being the most universally hated one out of the entire run.” Or, the more humorous snark aimed at King himself like “I thought that after leaving the CIA you would no longer collaborate with crimes.”

X

Other fans got even more dramatic, posting things like “Congratulations on doing irreparable damage to Wonder Woman… Go write someone else and leave Diana to someone who loves and respects her Legacy.” The insults only got bigger once memes got involved – and since fans who enjoy and support the issue have jumped in it’s become a hot debate within the DC fandom.

Weirdly enough, there was a fair amount of free promotion for writer Kelly Thompson and her upcoming Absolute Wonder Woman series. That book is part of DC’s new Absolute Universe, a reality created and ruled by god-level Darkseid where the origins of core Justice League heroes like Wonder Woman, Batman, and Superman take very different twists and turns:

abs-ww-cv1-main-hayden-sherman.jpg
Absolute Wonder Woman #1 cover by Hayden Sherman and Jordie Bellaire

In some cases, Wonder Woman #14 seems to be acting as a Rorschach test, with fans coming away with big love or hate opinions over the same exact set of panels!

DC/X

There’s also a single-panel image of Wonder Woman crying on an American flag that has sparked some of the ugliest discourse online (in an election year? Who would’ve thought!).

In full context: the scene is Diana grieving over Steve Trevor’s death while off in seclusion. She steals the service flag laid over his coffin as a memento and wraps herself in it, sobbing in agony on the ground of a cave. King’s Wonder Woman run has been criticized by some as allegedly reframing the character to be an American propaganda tool – so this image with the flag has triggered ire in those circles. Of course, there are just many fans who are proud to see Americana symbolism being emphasized in the current era of Wonder Woman, as it’s arguably been a traditional theme of the character and her iconography, all along. The result: another flame-war debate.

By the time we get to the end of Wonder Woman #14 and the strange mysticism and romanticism that led to Trinity’s “birth,” some fans weren’t just done with the issue – they’re claiming to be done with this entire run:

Wonder Woman #14 Synopsis

STEVE TREVOR’S LAST STAND AND THE BIRTH OF A HERO! With the tide of the war against the Sovereign turning, Wonder Woman’s greatest love takes matters into his own hands with deadly consequences. Could Steve’s end be the beginning of Diana’s greatest adventure yet? Behold the birth of Trinity!

Blast to the past! McFarlane / DC Direct just dropped another addition to the DC Super Powers line. This time it’s a 3-pack featuring Green Lantern, Hourman, and Starman! The Super Powers line specializes in bringing that nostalgic charm back to action figures. From the packaging to the fabric capes each hero wears, this collection of 4.5-inch figures definitely feels like it arrived here straight from the ’80s.

If you’re new to the Marvel collecting game and need a refresher on who Hourman and Starman are, look no further! Hourman’s real identity is that of chemist Rex Tyler, who created a vitamin so strong that it gave him superpowers! One catch though – it only lasts one hour, hence the name. Starman is also an esteemed scientist. He’s an astronomer that developed a particularly strong Gravity Rod that allows him to gather the power of the stars at his fingertips.

You can find the 3-pack up for pre-order at Entertainment Earth here and here on Amazon priced at $24.99. It’s currently estimated to ship out in December of this year. Remember, Entertainment Earth offers free US shipping on orders $99+, and a flat $7.95 shipping on everything else.

More DC McFarlane Toys

In other McFarlane / DC Direct news, Supergirl got her own statue today, modeled after the art by J. Scott Campbell. This limited-edition 1:8 scale statue stands 10-inches tall and is hand-numbered on the base. Priced at $149.99, the statue is estimated for arrival in May, 2025. DC has confirmed the death of a major core character of the DC Universe. Speculation leaked months ago (as per usual with previews) that this character had a death flag over their head – but now the death has been confirmed as about as official as any comic book death can be. Out of that death, however, has come a controversial birth, and DC fans are certainly feeling some kind of way about all of it!

WARNING MAJOR SPOILERS!

Wonder Woman #14 by writer Tom King and artist Daniel Sampere finally answers the big mystery of how Wonder Woman’s daughter Trinity was born, and who her father was. As many fans speculated from the start, Trinity is the daughter of Diana and her longtime beau and ally Col. Stever Trevor. However, not many fans ever guessed the twist that Diana would have to make her daughter out of clay and endow it with the entwined essences of both her parents – because her dad was already dead.

DC Kills Steve Trevor In Wonder Woman #14

The arc of Tom King’s Wonder Woman run has seen Diana taking on The Sovereign, the “secret king of the United States of America.” The Sovereign has manipulated public perception against the Amazons; imprisoned Diana and tortured her mind using his dark “Lasso of Lies”; gathered up a gang of some of Wonder Woman’s most formidable rogues and trapped her with her archnemesis Cheetah – and Diana beat it all. So when Steve Trevor attempts to go undercover and get intel from The Sovereign, he makes the fatal discovery that the villain has lured him to his home to be a sacrifice – a way of deeply hurting Diana by killing the man she loves. Trevor barely gets out a “Hello” before he’s shot point-blank in the chest and dies. The Sovereign has his body thrown into the Potomac River, only to have the corpse float into the waters of the Lincoln Memorial, causing instant public uproar and scrutiny.

DC / Daniel Sampere

The main portion of Wonder Woman #14’s story sees Diana swimming her way to the underworld and coming up in the River Styx, where Steve Trevor has already commandeered the ferryman’s boat and is waiting for her. Diana and Steve get their goodbye – which turns out to be part of some larger plan, as the witch Circe notices that threads of both Steve and Diana’s souls are missing – threads Diana later confesses to knowing they exchanged long ago.

After failing to bring Steve back from the dead, Diana takes a hair from her head and mystically(?) transforms them into the thread of Steve’s soul, and one of her own. She unites the threads which become a golden thread (thanks to the witches’ design), and that golden thread gets placed on a baby Diana fashioned out of clay on the shores of Paradise Island. The issue also provides the origin of Trinity’s alter-ego name, “Elizabeth,” as Steve reveals it’s the name of the grandmother he loved and is eager to see again in the afterlife.

DC Comics / Daniel SAmpere

To say that comic book fans have thoughts about Wonder Woman #14 and Trinity’s origin would be an understatement. At this point, we know from Tom King’s non-linear storytelling that Trinity is on some kind of mission to get information from The Sovereign. Could that information be how to bring back Steve Trevor? Or is the character now better served remaining dead, and letting his daughter carry on his legacy?

Wonder Woman #14 is on sale at DC.

While Laura has experience working on an X-Men team, she’s also very comfortable operating from the shadows alone. As fans get accustomed to this new era of X-Men storytelling, Laura will forge a new path for herself while helping mutants in need in Laura Kinney: Wolverine. The title promises to send Wolverine to the darkest corners of the Marvel Universe, and series writer Erica Schultz is giving fans a sneak peek at what she has planned.

ComicBook spoke to Erica Schultz ahead of the debut of Laura Kinney: Wolverine in December. Schultz is no stranger to Laura Kinney, having penned last year’s X-23: Deadly Regenesis limited series that flashed back to Laura’s early days as X-23. We asked Schultz about Laura’s new mission statement, what villains fans can expect, exploring the different sides of the Wolverine, whose side Laura will choose in the X-Men crossover “Raid on Graymalkin,” and more.

ComicBook can also exclusively reveal the first look at interior pages from Laura Kinney: Wolverine #1 by Giada Belviso (Blood Hunters, Jackpot & Black Cat).

ComicBook: Laura appears to be making a new life for herself with Ms. Marvel and the rest of the cast in NYX, so how does she get this new mission statement that has her defending mutants who can’t defend themselves?

Erica Schultz: Laura has never really felt like she fit in. Despite hanging with Kamala and Sophie, she’s still very much a loner. Also, having been on X-Force, she knows there’s things that need to be done…and that means getting her hands dirty. That’s a little much for some of the NYX kids, so Laura is fine taking these on. It’s not to say that Laura WON’T fit in with the NYX cast, but that she has always had her own side jobs. She IS a Wolverine, after all.

How do you approach coming up with unique villains and threats for Laura? An example readers already experienced was your introduction of the new villain Haymaker in X-23: Deadly Regenesis.

There will be new villains and old ones in this series. The fall of Krakoa fractured mutants both geographically and ideologically. Laura is unique in that she had her training in the Facility, which gives her a certain cynicism. She’ll definitely be surprised at what she finds, though. But it’s not all nihilism, and Laura will learn some new tricks, as well as see that there are still good people out there. I think this book will be true to life in that she’ll have all kinds of experiences that will build on one another and culminate in a new level of her growing up.

In the San Diego Comic Con announcement for Laura Kinney: Wolverine, you mentioned that you want to show all the different sides of Laura. Which side, or personality trait, has been the most fun for you to explore?

Laura is usually angry, and, despite my being able to relate to that, I wanted to show that she has an optimism, too. It’s buried deep, but it’ll be unearthed a few times in this series. She’ll be exposed to other players that will show her that there is still good in the world despite the constant stream of horrors daily. Sounds a little too real, all things considered.

There’s a big X-Men crossover on the horizon in “Raid on Graymalkin.” What are Laura’s thoughts on what’s happening, and whose side of the X-Men civil war will she find herself on?

I can’t give too many details, but suffice it to say, Laura is kind of done with teams right now. Even in NYX, her solo issue (#2) shows her mostly on her own. She’s by no means against a team up, but she’s also wary of how sometimes teammates complicate things. Complications usually end with someone getting hurt…and not everyone can heal from that.

To wrap up, what can you tease about your future plans in Laura Kinney: Wolverine?

There will be some unexpected team ups. Laura is going to learn a lot about herself and how she’s not as alone in this world as she once thought. She’s not the only person in the world who was trained as an assassin at a young age and forced to do things against her will…and maybe she’ll learn that through a team up or two. But you’re going to have to get the book to really find out!

The Joker isn’t clowning around. After the Mark Hamill-voiced Clown Prince of Crime joined the MultiVersus roster earlier this year, DC’s MultiVersus: Collision Detected #3 explains how Batman’s archenemy entered the fray: by having the Joker (resembling his appearance in Batman: The Animated Series) step out of a Looney Tunes-style circle ring. That’s not all, folks: the six-issue DC comic series, which reveals the backstory behind the crossover platform fighting game, name-dropped the multiversal threat that caused worlds to collide: the Nothing.

“Level Three: Save File Corrupted” picks up where last issue left off: with the heroes of the Justice League (resembling their DC Animated Universe counterparts) joining forces with characters from across the Warner-Verse. While Wonder Woman defeats The Wizard of Oz‘s Wicked Witch of the West and her emerald defender, Gorilla Grodd, in Gorilla City, Batman is teleported to the Gallery of Worlds by a Brainiac droid who abducted him from the Batcave in Gotham City.

Meanwhile, in Metropolis, Superman, Hawkgirl, and the John Stewart Green Lantern fight a Rick Sanchez-shaped space ship barfing Brainiac robots. Genet and Steven Universe help Hawkgirl and Green Lantern defeat the army of drones outside the ship, but inside, Superman is attacked by a legion of robots modeled after beloved cartoon characters: Adventure Time‘s Finn and Jake, and the cat and mouse duo Tom & Jerry.

Brainiac informs the heroes that he’s unable to control his actions because he’s been “infected by a multidimensional narcissist”: Rick and Morty‘s alcoholic, dimension-hopping mad scientist. Batman severs Rick’s control of Brainiac and deduces that the alien artificial intelligence detected the same signal as Avia’s Daughter Box: the video game-like console crackling with interdimensional energies.

At the Fortress of Solitude, a rebooted Brainiac is imprisoned next to the Wicked Witch. Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman have quarantined the multiversal trespassers who have crossed into this dimension: Steven Universe and Genet, Scooby-Doo and Shaggy, and Bugs Bunny.

Their recollection of events before The Change are similar: an unknown entity named Devoid is forcing them to fight each other under threat of an entropic force called the Nothing, which is erasing their respective universes from existence. (It’s suspected this is the Nothing from Warner Bros.’ 1984 adaptation of The NeverEnding Story.)

The trinity is concerned that Devoid will discover the DC Universe if they’re unable to return the trespassers to their universes — and that their homeworlds will fall to the Nothing if this collection of characters aren’t fighters in Devoid’s tournament. Batman plans to send the trespassers back to their universes the way they came: through the Daughter Box. They can then follow them with an army of heroes and save all their universes. But with the Daughter Box damaged by an explosion, it has maybe one more signal output left — meaning the heroes have one chance to send everyone back home at the same time.

Unbeknownst to the heroes, someone is eavesdropping via a bug planted on Scooby’s collar: the Joker, who was posing as Condiment King when he was apprehended by the Mystery Inc. duo in Central City. Joker spies on Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy and learns that Harley has adopted Reindog: the last survivor of the world of Zanifeer, which was first to fall victim to the Nothing during the great dimensional cataclysm, and the final fighter the heroes need to locate.

Something called the Nothing is going to erase everything unless Batman gets his hands on that thing?” Joker cackles, revealing his plan to end the entire multiverse: “I’m gonna STEAL it!”

MultiVersus: Collision Detected #4 goes on sale October 30.

Happy new comic book day! It’s another major week in comics, and the ComicBook staff have come together to break down and review as many of the big comics releasing this week as possible. Now obviously this isn’t every single comic on stands, but we’re breaking down new releases from Marvel, DC, Image Comics, BOOM! Studios, Dark Horse, Dynamite, Oni Press, IDW, Mad Cave Studios, DSTLRY, and more!

We’ve also carved out some additional space for three of this week’s biggest books, including The Exorcism at Penn 1600 #1, Batman and Robin: Year One #1, and Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu #1, so if our smaller review here piques your interest, make sure to check out the full review for a much more comprehensive analysis of all three issues. As for ratings, we keep things simple with a whole or half number out of five, and you can check out some of our previous reviews right here. With all that said, let’s get to this week’s new comics!

DC

Action Comics #1071
Action Comics #1071 takes Superman to the Phantom Zone and sees him start to investigate whatever is going on there only to get hit with a shocking surprise when he sees who is behind the Phantom King. It’s an action-filled issue that sees Superman fight a giant spider creature while also testing his own limits. It’s not exactly clear what is going on overall, but that twist reveal certainly hints at something exciting going forward and gives the whole thing momentum. The Supergirl story is also interesting and sees a major complication thrown at Supergirl and again, while what is really going on remains a mystery, things get pushed to the next level making this whole issue overall one that just hooks readers even further. – Nicole Drum
Rating: 4 out of 5

Batman and Robin: Year One #1
Overall, Batman and Robin: Year One is a solid read. While there is a little bit of an issue with tone at points, specifically in regard to how we are introduced to Dick and then how he actually is presented, the story does a good job of offering a fresh take on the early dynamic of, well, DC’s dynamic duo. By centering things on the idea of Bruce as a parent just as much as a hero, Waid and Samnee have created a story that is interesting and unique, but still offers the promise of a classic Batman and Robin adventure.

Rating: 4 out of 5

Catwoman #69
Selina Kyle gets a back-to-basics revamp for the All-In era, with almost all of the positives that that could entail. Torunn Gronbekk’s script takes a familiar enough premise and presents it with an intimate and lyrical quality, one that is matched pretty well by Fabiana Mascolo’s clean art and Patricio Delpeche’s noirish colors. While there’s no telling exactly how this arc will set itself apart from previous Catwoman eras, the work on display from this creative team is already exciting. – Jenna Anderson
Rating: 4 out of 5

Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter #4
Both the main story from Jay Kristoff and backup story from Tom Taylor balance high-octane action with genuine pathos towards their parent-child relationships. While Tirso’s aesthetic choices on the main story are a bit more visually outstanding, Riccardo Federici’s art also delivers some cleverly conceived moments of action and gore. This spinoff is turning me into a believer of the larger franchise that Dark Knights of Steel has become.”
– Jenna Anderson
Rating: 4 out of 5

Green Lantern #16
The Green Lantern Civil Corps Special put a few big ideas into motion, and those ideas land with massive impact in Green Lantern #16. Things teased in the special have immediate consequences as the next major arc gets underway, and if you thought the Special was big, it’s nothing compared to what goes down in #16. Jeremy Adams will have Lantern fans of all kinds losing their minds at various times in the issue, and Xermanico and Romulo Fajardo Jr. might have created one of my favorite issues of the series to date just based on constructs alone, though that Mogo scene is a sight to behold as well. Adams continues to pull together the threads from Green Lantern and Green Lantern: War Journal, and the way those elements and characters come together is delightful, including one particular first meeting that had me reeling from the reveal but also has so many amazing possibilities. Green Lantern #16 followed up a special issue and might have just managed to run circles around it, and the next issue can’t get here soon enough. – Matthew Aguilar
Rating: 5 out of 5

Jenny Sparks #3
Jenny Sparks #3 doesn’t really seem like it knows exactly what story it is trying to tell. The storyline continues between two timelines, this time with Jenny in the Middle East in 2004 confronting Superman on his non-involvement in matters of war and the present where the issue of Captain Atom at the bar only escalates. While it is obvious that there is supposed to be some parallel between the two storylines, it doesn’t really feel like it comes together. Like the previous issue, it’s very dense and one gets the idea that this is another story that may only make sense once it’s complete but, unfortunately, at this point, it feels like we are no further into the story than when we started. – Nicole Drum
Rating: 2.5 out of 5

Titans #16
Titans’ fresh start in the All-In era arrives with some potential, as well as a few flaws. John Layman’s script decently balances the team’s different personality types, but does get periodically bogged down by shortsighted narrative beats. Pete Woods’ art is also somewhat of a mixed bag, delivering gorgeously-rendered action sequences one moment and awkward facial expressions the next. It will remain to be seen if this Titans arc becomes a major jumping-on point for new readers, but at least conceptually, there is promise. – Jenna Anderson
Rating: 3 out of 5

Wonder Woman #14
Wonder Woman #14 finally gives us Trinity’s origin story. Overall, it’s a sad and beautiful story of loss and hope that is at times really elegantly written. But it is also stretched a little thin in spots with certain elements — such as the Fates — inserted into things in a way that almost doesn’t feel necessary and somewhat distracts from the core emotional pieces of things. There’s also a bit of the story being told out of order that does, at points, make it a little hard to follow exactly what is going on. Beyond that, however, this issue has some of the most gorgeous Wonder Woman art we’ve seen yet — and that says something considering how stunning this series has been overall. – Nicole Drum
Rating: 3 out of 5

World’s Finest #32
Waid is once again given quite the sandbox to play in when it comes to the best superhero book that DC Comics is printing today. In fighting against the villainous Eclipso, not only do we get the chance for the prolific writer to tackle the Justice Society but give Robin his chance to shine. As mentioned in my past review for this latest World’s Finest arc, Dan Mora is taking a break from the series, and while Gutierrez does a serviceable job, its a tough act to follow. Still, the series remains the gold standard for DC, even if its main artist is working on other projects in the DCU at the moment. The fight against Eclipso here is one that shows the best of DC’s heroes and once again proves how World’s Finest remains a must-read book for superhero fans. – Evan Valentine
Rating 4 out of 5

Marvel Comics

Avengers Assemble #2
Avengers Assemble #2 tries to keep the cooks, fun, old-school Avengers vibes going with a story about the new emergency response squad fighting ghost apes but it feels like a book that didn’t get the time and attention it needed, There’s a new penciled and inker team involved in Scott Eaton and Elisabetta D’Amico and the later doesn’t hold back with the blacks. It is, perhaps, an effort to give the ghost ape story some dark horror vibes but ultimately muddies much of the line work and makes the entire visual aesthetic feel cramped and heavy. Writer Steve Orlando tries to lighten the mood with fun character banter and interludes to the new and old team members still at the mansion bonding, though some of these vignettes are marred by confusing lettering placement. While the pitch is fun, it’s ultimately a pretty straightforward plot enlivened by a little extra focus on character, but hamstrung by some fundamental stumbles in most other departments.
– Jamie Lovett
Rating: 3 out of 5

Crypt of Shadows #1
The 2024 edition of this Halloween-centric one-shot is another fun little story from Marvel, but its biggest fault is that frankly the thing is too short. Leaving the readers wanting more is usually a good thing but by the time many of the stories in Crypt of Shadows #1 get started they’re already over. The standouts from this issue include “The Green Tide,” a Man-Thing Namor crossover from Benjamin Percy and Raffaele Ienco, and “Monster Games” a Kraven, Blade, Werewolf by Night story from Jason Loo and Carlos Magno. On the whole a fun read but not one that blows the doors off. – Spencer Perry
Rating: 3.5 out of 5

Miles Morales: Spider-Man #25
Giving Miles a villainous side with these vampire powers could be a really tough sell, but its his inner monologue here that allows it all to work. His internal struggles with power and responsibility are clear, crisp, and sometimes moving. The inner monologue can make or break a lot of Spider-Man stories. Thankfully, this falls into the former category.
– Charlie Ridgely
Rating: 3.5 out of 5

Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu #1
Marc Spector made his grand return in the pages Blood Hunt, and then he dealt with the Moon Knight imposter who had taken up the mantle during his time away. Now that some of the dust has settled, Jed MacKay, Alessandro Cappuccio, Rachelle Rosenberg, and Cory Petit are getting back to the core of what’s made this run so special, and it all kicks off in Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu #1. Few teams are able to capture the core concepts of a character, let alone all of them, but this team has never struggled in that regard, and such is the case once again as a new era in the Moon Knight mythos begins. The Midnight Mission is back, and they haven’t lost a step. – Matthew Aguilar (Click here for full review)
Rating: 4.5 out of 5

Mystique #1
This series starts a little slow, following characters that aren’t necessarily vital to its plot. When Mystique and Nick Fury take over, though, this spy saga sings. Mystique is menacing and intriguing, while Fury acts the part of a foil trying to pull off the impossible with very little at his disposal. There’s a lot to be excited about in this series going forward.
– Charlie Ridgely
Rating: 4 out of 5

Spider-Man: Reign 2 #4
Reign 2 is trying to do entirely too much. There are far too many ideas at play here for any of them to find any solid footing. And this version of Peter just isn’t all that interesting, no matter how many interesting scenarios are thrust upon him. – Charlie Ridgely
Rating: 2 out of 5

Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku – Insurgency Rising #2
The Star Wars comics have had some success filling in the gaps from the stories in the movies, but Insurgency Rising just isn’t nearly as strong as some of its predecessors. It’s nice to have more time with Leia, and getting some actual Zorii Bliss backstory is nice, but none of it is enough to hold the whole issue on its shoulders. On top of that, a lot of the character art is seriously lacking. There’s little consistency and it makes for a frustrating read. – Charlie Ridgely
Rating: 2 out of 5

The Spectacular Spider-Men #8
The Arcadium might have been defeated by Peter Parker and Miles Morales but the scars left by Arcade and Mentallo are still fresh. Routinely in superhero fare, readers don’t see much in the way of battles having psychological effects on the heroes themselves so Weismann takes an interesting position when it comes to your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Men. Ramos is replaced by Laiso and Genolet, who both do a fantastic job of sticking to the previous artist’s style and capturing the emotions of the Daily Grind’s patronage. Spectacular Spider-Men remains the best Spider-Man book on the market today and Weisman is leading Miles and Pete on an interesting, introspective journey that has some amazing superheroing along the way. – Evan Valentine
Rating 4.5 out of 5

Ultimate Spider-Man #10
Hickman is joined by guest artist David Messina for this latest issue of the Ultimate Spider-Man and truly highlights one of the best, lesser-discussed parts of this new take on the Wallcrawler. Jonah and Ben Parker are the new dynamic duo of the comic book scene and they are front and center here in a story that is intriguing and jam-packed despite not seeing Peter throw on his special suit once to fight crime. The back-and-forth dialogue between these old friends looking to crack a new case is infectious, and it’s quite the feat that Hickman can weave an issue where you find yourself enraptured by the story without any superheroics whatsoever. Ultimate Spider-Man #10 works as an excellent stand-alone issue that truly demonstrates the strength of the series’ concept and how this new universe is one worth sticking with. – Evan Valentine
Rating 4.5 out of 5

Uncanny X-Men #4
Uncanny X-Men remains the book to beat in the post-Krakoa era of Marvel’s mightiest mutants. To start, Sarah Gaunt is an interesting new villain to the X-mythos, along with her ties to Charles Xavier and what said ties mean for the current state of the X-Men. Writer Gail Simone has a lot of plates spinning at once but she makes the act of juggling said plates appear effortless. On top of Sarah, Rogue’s new team is still dealing with taking in new mutants to their “humble abode” and now that they’re being placed into the line of fire, the storyline is heating up in the best ways. I would be remiss if I also didn’t touch upon David Marquez’s amazing art here, capturing both emotional, quieter moments alongside hard-hitting ones that see Rogue trying to take down Charles’ evil-ex. Uncanny has a lot going for it and I’m anxious to see what else Simone has in store for this team because it’s tough to find many faults here. – Evan Valentine
Rating 4.5 out of 5

Wolverine #2
Wolverine’s new status in the post-Krakoa era is one that sounds good on paper, but in execution, there are more than a few holes in this boat. For a story that relies on Logan stories wherein he is fending off his Berserker rage in the wilds of Canada, the second issue is wildly introspective. Wolverine finds himself monologuing throughout the entirety of the issue, breaking a pivotal rule in “show, don’t tell”. What the creative team does here with the Wendigo, aka taking on a new approach to the hairy albino monster, is serviceable but it almost seems as though this new story abandons the seeds that were planted in the first issue. From this second issue, Wolverine’s story might be dealing with more problems than Department H. – Evan Valentine
Rating 2.5 out of 5

Image Comics

Destro #5
Destro’s mini-series comes to an end, offering an interesting characterization of the “iron monger” and how COBRA is the perfect fit for the world that he wants to forge. The Energon Universe is one that has been able to capitalize on the strongest aspects of its heroes and villains, while also weaving the lines of modernizing the approach of both GI Joe and the Transformers. Destro’s fight against COBRA’s most famous twins and his interactions with Cobra Commander works well here, setting the stage for the antithesis of GI Joe to fully take root. The mini-series conclusion also hints at the future of the comic book run as a whole, planting some interesting seeds for the crossover universe. – Evan Valentine
Rating 4 Out Of 5

Falling In Love On The Path To Hell #5
To put it simply, this issue is stunning — both as a progression of the series’ ambitious plot, and as a rumination on love. Gerry Duggan and Garry Brown’s script traverses realities and points in time with a satisfying ease, which is matched by Chris O’Halloran’s expressve and rustic art. This series continues to impress in so many ways. – Jenna Anderson
Rating: 4.5 out of 5

Local Man #25
Local Man’s final (for now) issue is exactly the finale it deserves… and so much more. Jack’s status quo as a superhero and a man culminates in a matter that is surprising and heartfelt, both to its cast of characters and to the mere concept of Image’s superhero boom. Tim Seeley and Tony Fleecs’ work on this series has been truly unparalleled, and as sad as I am that this chapter is over, I am absolutely looking forward to whatever their combined future holds. – Jenna Anderson
Rating: 5 out of 5

Radiant Black #30
The Catalyst War’s thrilling conclusion is finally here, and unlike some of the previous issues, issues 30 and 30. 5 are really part 1 and part 2 of this story as opposed to alternate viewpoints that weave together. This story has been incredibly ambitious, and despite the challenges inherent with the sort of scale and number of layers to all this, Kyle Higgins and Joe Clark have found a way to navigate it relatively smoothly. Once the issue gets past the trials explanation it really hits high gear, bouncing from frenetic chaos on the battlefield to complex conversations about turning away from what you know with ease. Marcelo Costa, Eduardo Ferigato, Raul Angulo, and Rod Fernandes pivot with ease as well, and there’s a sense of scale in this issue and its companion that is absurdly impressive and never gets old. The action is intense and the stakes are high, and while some of the bigger concepts might be a tad difficult to get your head around sometimes, it’s a stellar penultimate issue.
– Matthew Aguilar
Rating: 4 out of 5

Radiant Black #30.5
If Radiant Black #30.5 was truly a swan song for the character, it would be one hell of a final note, but as it stands, it’s still one hell of a finale to one of the most ambitious events in comic memory. The Catalyst War has been built in a variety of ways and through multiple points of view along the way, and it all leads to one of the best issues in the series to date. Radiant Black #30. 5 delivers epic action and a wealth of fan service for those who have followed along and invested in the rich and ever-expanding Massive-Verse. Did you want to see a fan favorite? It’s likely they’re here, and even if they don’t get a huge amount of screen time, it’s amazing to see your favorites come together for a common cause, and all of them look fantastic thanks to the talents of Marcelo Costa and Eduardo Ferigato. Meanwhile, Kyle Higgins and Joe Clark bring it all back to Nathan and Marshall, and their story features some welcome twists and turns before coming to a satisfying and rewarding conclusion. This isn’t the end of Radiant Black, but it does feel like the end of an era in that story, and that era landed the plane brilliantly – Matthew Aguilar
Rating: 5 out of 5

The Department of Truth #26
The Department of Truth #26 takes a detour in the vortex of fiction, rumor, and reality that surrounds Marilyn Monroe. Guest artist Alison Sampson and colorist Jordie Bellaire show stunning skill and versatility in making the reader feel unmoored in Monroe’s presence, as does the agent who visits her. Repeating panels used as background draw on Munroe’s film presence while making her seem to pop out of the page. The facial expressions in the artwork convey a wild swinging between a joyfully innocent woman and one who is entirely capable of seducing a president. Gilded colors drive home the opulence of the persona’s existence. It’s a gorgeous comic that is at times unnerving for its unrestrained beauty.
– Jamie Lovett
Rating: 4 out of 5

Ultramega #6
There’s no arguing with James Harren’s artwork. The introduction of the Ultramega planet into this series’ mythos has provided him an opportunity to channel more of that big, epic energy that he infused its debut issue while continuing to draw smaller scale but not less effectively kinetic action on Earth and weird little guys like the walking taking giant severed head that is our main character’s father. Unfortunately, the plot still feels scattered and unfocused, leaving little to hang all this wonderful artwork on. There are hints that these varied plot threads may soon coalesce into a tighter narrative. Until then, it’s mostly a fun ride with some incredible scenery. – Jamie Lovett
Rating: 3.5 out of 5

Witchblade #4
The new Witchblade series remains a surprisingly fun read, one where the reinvention of the character and its mythology has not only taken on a more modern storytelling sensibility but one that seems to actually care about where it’s headed. Scribe Marguerite Bennett is planting seeds in each issue that make picking up the next a necessity and this one is no different while series artist Giuseppe Cafaro delivers amazing panel design that functions as both character work and pushes the story forward. Don’t sleep on the new Witchblade, it’s surprising in many ways. – Spencer Perry

Other Publishers

Epitaphs From The Abyss #4
Epitaphs from the Abyss #4 might be the most chilling issue yet, this time with three stories that actually deliver unsettling scares. With stories that take on paranormal/monster streamers and their need to exploit lore for content, toxic marriage, and influencer and wellness fads, this trio of stories goes in some very dark directions. The real standout is Amy Roy & Claire Roe’s “The Perfect Pearl” but really, the whole issue is solid.
– Nicole Drum
Rating: 4 out of 5

Grim #20
A pivotal new issue in Grim arrives with series scribe Stephanie Phillips delivering a story that’s equal parts sexy and mysterious while also totally unique. Flaviano’s artwork manages to channel both of these descriptors throughout its pages while also making some of the dialogue punchlines land even harder with some hilarious panels. Series color artist Rico Renzi elevates the entire piece though, capturing the specific moods of each moment and the bizarre otherworldly lands on each page. – Spencer Perry
Rating: 5 out of 5

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin II – Re-Evolution #3
The Last Ronin II has been a slow burn, focused more on establishing this new generation of turtles as characters, and their superpowers, than on the plot transpiring mostly in the background, and that remains true through most of the series’ third issue. That this story’s villain is still barely present is in stark contrast to the first Last Ronin story, which was laser-focused on Michelangelo’s vendetta against Oroku Hiroto. That said, The Last Ronin II #3 remains an entertaining read. All that focus on the new characters has laid off in giving them distinct personalities to playfully bounce off of one another. There are some other beats here that play with the idea of the TMNT story cycle repeating itself, and seeing Kevin Eastman draw a couple of pages of old-school Turtles but through the filter of what is essentially urban legend is a delight. By the end, the story reaches a point i no return that seems likely to ramp up the tension and pace as the series continues. – Jamie Lovett
Rating: 3.5 out of 5

The Exorcism At 1600 Penn #1
May’s dialogue can be offputting at times (the phrases “chicken tendies,” “trending number one on TikTok,” and “liked by The Rock” appearing in quick succession may have some readers wanting to tap out early on), but weaves an intriguing tale of family drama against a backdrop both political and supernatural. Del Rey’s layouts, particularly over two pages, are sometimes flashy to the point of distracting from the scenes they are meant to frame. However, with Bellaire’s moody colors, her artwork makes the White House seem possessed and conveys the fracturing of a family. Otsmane-Elhaou’s lettering drives home key character moments, using irregular speech bubbles conveying crucial changes in voice (though some additional variation may have helped distinguish one vocal alteration from another). On Tuesday, DC announced a new deal with GlobalComix, a digital platform that aims to optimize digital comics for mobile devices. Through use of vertical scroll, a format that makes comics feel more like a social media feed, the platform aims to change the face of digital comics in the United States, bringing them more into line with a webtoon-style presentation. The deal, which launched immediately, currently features around 400 titles from DC’s library. This, along with a just-announced line of all-ages comics and vertically-remastered titles for DC Universe Infinite, suggests a shift in DC’s approach to digital comics.

For years, DC worked exclusively with ComiXology, now owned by Amazon. ComiXology’s de facto monopoly on American digital comics has been in doubt since Amazon folded the ComiXology app into Kindle, drawing backlash from longtime customers. GlobalComix executive Christopher Carter recently appeared at an ICv2 event extolling the virtures of vertical scrolling for comics.

The GlobalComix titles available will include best-sellers and stories featuring A-list names like Batman, The Joker, and Doom Patrol, according to Wired. There will also be a number of free-to-try titles.

The initial crop of original DC GO! titles will include Harley Quinn in Paradise from writer CRC Payne (Batman: Wayne Family Adventures) and artists Siobhan Chiffon and Cathy Le (Archie Comics: Big Ethel Energy), Nothing Butt Nightwing by writer Patrick R. Young (Red Hood: Outlaws) and artist Moy R. Marco (West Coast Avengers), and Renaissance of Raven by writer Sina Grace (Superman: The Harvests of Youth) and artists Nico Bascuñan (Red Hood: Outlaws), Katherine Lobo (The Vampire Slayer), and Carola Borelli (Avengers Academy: Marvel’s Voices Infinity Comic). Sneak peeks of both Harley Quinn in Paradise and Nothing Butt Nightwing are currently available to read on DC Universe.

“The legacy American comic publishers seem to have reached the limits of new customer acquisition through media,” says Milton Griepp, publisher of ICv2. He told Wired that verticals scroll comics “are bringing in tens of millions of new, mostly younger readers worldwide.”

That’s a valuable market, considering how much the American comics audience seems to be aging. Since the full-time transition to direct market comics sales and the death of newsstand comics, it’s a lot harder for casual fans to find comics. You have to be heading into the comic shop already to discover a new title, which makes building

“The mobile reading experience on a phone is just better with vertical scroll,” GlobalComix co-founder and CEO Christopher Carter told Wired.

Change is in the air for Miles Morales, and it begins with a new superhero suit. The young Spider-Man has dealt with his share of drama over the last year, from a new nemesis named Rabble discovering Miles’ secret identity to being turned into a vampire during Marvel’s Blood Hunt event. It’s enough stress to break down any superhero, let alone a teenager trying to navigate his responsibilities as a student, son, brother, boyfriend, and friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. However, the major problem at the forefront is the aforementioned vampirism. Luckily, help is on the way from the former King of Wakanda, Black Panther.

*WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Miles Morales: Spider-Man #25. Continue reading at your own risk!

Miles Morales: Spider-Man #25 comes from the creative team of Cody Ziglar, Federico Vicentini, Bryan Valenza, and VC’s Cory Petit. Miles has been trying to balance the effects of being a vampire have on his crimefighting, to varying results. Misty Knight, Starling (Miles’ girlfriend Tiana Toomes, the granddaughter of the villainous Vulture), and Miles’ therapist have Black Panther visit Miles to offer his help. Black Panther was also turned into a vampire by Blade, who was possessed by the vampire Varnae, in Blood Hunt. However, Black Panther was able to drive out the supernatural influence.

Before offering his help, Black Panther challenges Spider-Man to a fight to gauge if Miles is too far gone to help. It only takes seeing a small drip of blood from Black Panther’s arm to send Miles into a crazed state. The fight doesn’t last long, and Black Panther comes away convinced he can help save Miles. T’Challa comes bearing gifts in the form of a technically-advanced Vibranium costume.

Miles morales checking out his vibranium suit

Miles Morales’ Vibranium Spider-Man suit is the first step in curing his vampirism

Black Panther informs Miles Morales that the first stage of his treatment plan is a new Vibranium costume. Or, to be precise, “a Vibranium non-mesh interwoven with an internal coaxial, insulated coating.” Miles’ venom energy has been acting as an antibody to keep the vampiric infection at bay. But every time Miles uses his Spider abilities, it drains his antibody reserves and puts a major strain on his body. The Vibranium suit looks to address this by regulating his internal venom energies.

Miles can immediately feel the difference in how his body is reacting inside the suit. The rage and anger are gone, replaced with a feeling of trust he hasn’t felt in a long time. Black Panther adds that the Vibranium insulation gives Miles better control over his powers, though they won’t be as potent as they were previously. Miles can now hold a venom charge for an extended period of time, and the feelings of hunger are also fainter.

That’s not all the new Spider-Man suit can do. There’s a Vibranium mesh to protect Miles from most fatal injuries, lined with a thinner fabric so he can keep his Spider-like agility. And last but not least, Vibranium-laced webbing! You could say Miles Morales has a leg up on Peter Parker when it comes to who has the better Spider-Man powers.

Black Panther teases a secret to helping cure Miles Morales

Starling correctly points out that a new suit is only a bandage and not a cure. Miles will need something more to get his old life back. Black Panther reminds them that the suit is just the first step. “As this is a mystical affliction, a physical approach is not enough,” he says. What Black Panther is alluding to is the true path to Miles’ cure may take him to the fabled ancestral plane, where the spirits of the previous Black Panthers reside.

Unfortunately, Black Panther can’t confirm that’s what he’s talking about because their conversation is interrupted by the Vulture. He is back for Round 2 against Miles, and Vulture is holding a grudge since he thinks Miles is taking his granddaughter away from him. Starling tries to interfere, but Black Panther says this is a trial that only Miles can take alone. Miles Morales: Spider-Man #25 ends with Miles and Vulture in a heated showdown that will continue into the next issue.

What do you think of Black Panther’s gift of a Vibranium costume for Miles Morales? And how will the showdown between Spider-Man and Vulture conclude? Let us know your thoughts on social media @ComicBook!

Back to Basics

The past six to eight months have been dealing in the realms of life and death, and even when that wasn’t the focus, the mission has just been to survive thanks to a vampire horde attempting to take over the Earth. It’s been busy to say the least, which is why Fist of Khonshu switches things up and brings the story to a more street-level place. Death and the supernatural will always be a part of Moon Knight’s story, but they take a back seat to the threat that is most pressing, which leans into the grittier side of Moon Knight and the territory he protects.

Instead of a bloodthirsty horde, Moon Knight’s current problem is an addictive new drug called Glitter, and it’s started to make its way into his territory. The more grounded premise allows the book to take advantage of Moon Knight’s strengths and feels fresh thanks to how expanded the scope has been as of late. The switch-up also allows the complex nature of the character to shine as Mr. Knight steps into the limelight.

That return to the limelight is absolutely stunning by the way, with Cappuccio and Rosenberg knocking your socks off from the very first page. There’s something special about the aura and sleekness that Cappuccio brings to Mr. Knight specifically, and you see every facet of that on display throughout the issue. Whether Knight is taking down a host of thugs in brutal fashion or merely sitting at a table for a conversation, there’s always the sense that Marc could take down the entire room if he really wanted to. Rosenberg’s colors are a sight to behold as well, with Knight lighting up the room literally and figuratively as beautiful washes of blue, purple, and pink surround him, all while retailing that sheathed menacing nature throughout.

A New Threat

As for the new threat, the jury is still out a bit, but there is promise here. MacKay introduces us to Achilles Fairchild and Carver, and they do successfully make an impression in their first confrontation. It’s not until you see how things connect with other characters in the mix though that some of that starts to come together more, and this is likely the case moving forward as well. There’s also very little of the rest of Moon Knight’s team in this particular issue, but they’ve had much of the spotlight recently, so it makes sense to give Moon Knight the ball as this new era gets going.

Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu captures the magic that has made this run so special and sets up a gritty street-level adventure without losing the fantastical aspects that set the character and mythology apart from others in the Marvel Universe. It’s absolutely gorgeous at every turn as well, and while the jury is still out on the new villains, they show tremendous promise and are certainly in the right hands to reach that potential as the story moves forward.

Every partnership has an origin and that’s especially true for DC’s dynamic duo of Batman and Robin. While the partnership between Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson as Batman and Robin has been a core aspect of DC through various stories for decades, it’s an iconic partnership that is more than just crimefighting. It’s a father and son story as well and when it comes to Batman and Robin: Year One #1, that is exactly what we get. Written by Mark Waid with art by Chris Samnee, Batman and Robin: Year One #1 takes readers back to the earliest days of the duo’s collaboration offering a glimpse at not only the challenges the pair face out on the streets of Gotham as they figure out how to work together, but what parenting looks like for Bruce. And while there are a few small matters of tone that might not hit exactly true for every reader, it’s a strong first issue that not only sets up a classic comic adventure but gives a heartfelt look at one of comic’s most iconic team ups.

In Batman and Robin: Year One #1, we enter the story mere weeks after the death of Dick’s parents and his being adopted by Bruce Wayne. Straight out of the gate, however, it’s clear that everyone is in a little bit over their head as Bruce has no experience parenting, Alfred isn’t too sure about the situation, and even Dick isn’t exactly in a stable place with the young aerialist ready to jump straight into crimefighting, potentially with not quite enough preparedness to truly do so. Suiting up, the two soon find themselves dealing with Two Face and the revelation of a larger threat — as well as the dynamics of working together. Straight out of the gate, this is a charming issue. Visually, the book has a vintage, almost retro vibe that not only fits the “Year One” feeling, but also helps to drive home the inexperience of the characters — Dick’s inexperience as a crimefighter and Bruce’s as a parent figure both in and out of the suit. Samnee’s art is crips and makes excellent use of lines, conveying sweeping action even in the smallest panels. Matheus Lopes’ colors are also fantastic, fitting nicely with the vintage feel.

batman-and-robin-year-one-1-dc.jpg

In terms of overall story, Waid also does a great job of things with this adventure. We don’t waste a lot of time digging into how Dick ended up with Bruce or what their earliest weeks were like, but we move swiftly into an actual proof of concept of sorts, when Bruce takes Dick out as Robin, hoping to show him the ropes as the young hero’s training continues. The dynamic Waid gives the characters as Batman and Robin feels authentic and is at times even fun as we see an exuberance from Dick and perhaps a bit of unexpected anxiety from Bruce as the surrogate father watching his child do things without training wheels, as it were. The issue, however, is that some of the tone doesn’t quite fit with some of the words on the page. We’re told in text that Dick “smolders with rage” but what we’re shown doesn’t match that. Instead, Dick is quippy and funny, eager (perhaps too eager) to head into the field and prove himself. It’s an excellent portrayal of a kid playing at vigilante, but it feels wildly out of sync with what we’re being told about the character.

That said, while there is that tonal dissonance, it doesn’t detract from the comic overall. We get a bit more into Batman’s — and really, more Bruce than Batman — head when it comes to bringing Dick into this world. The issue also does a good job of bringing its lighter tone back to reality with the final page introducing the larger, looming threat that is coming for Batman and Robin. It’s a rather grim turn, but it’s effective — and serves as an excellent hook for the next issue. It goes a long way to tying things together and bringing readers back to center by reminding that while we’re dealing with a. young hero just starting out, this is still Gotham and the threats are still very, very real.

Overall, Batman and Robin: Year One is a solid read. While there is a little bit of an issue with tone at points, the story does a good job of offering a fresh take on the early dynamic of, well, DC’s dynamic duo. By centering things on the idea of Bruce as a parent just as much as a hero, Waid and Samnee have created a story that is interesting and unique, but still offers the promise of a classic Batman and Robin adventure.

The United States is currently wading through two recurring traditions simultaneously: the early fall Halloween season, in which most people indulge in the playfully demonic and monstrous, and the more seriously cursed election season, with 2024 being especially potent as it is a presidential election year. The two meet in The Exorcism at 1600 Penn #1, the first installment of a four-issue miniseries from writer Hannah Rose May, artist Vanesa Del Rey, colorist Jordie Bellaire, letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, and published by IDW Publishing. Though the combination of the political and the infernal may appear to be a superficial draw, The Exorcism at Penn 1600 #1 reveals greater depth in atmosphere and characterization as its inner darkness slowly creeps in.

The issue’s motifs are visually apparent on its opening page. Former United States Senator Kelly Doyle is delivering her fiery, optimistic inauguration speech following her swearing-in as the first female President of the United States. Yet, the scene looks anything but sunny, as grey clouds blot the sky and the Capitol Building looms behind, as if ready to consume her and everyone around her. It’s only a shame that staying true to how these traditions play out keeps the scene from occurring in front of the White House. Yet, once inside the president’s home, readers find it rendered like a haunted house with creeping shadows advancing from the edges and coloring that turns brackish or sickly in certain moments. Bellaire’s palette and technique combine with Del Rey’s thick lines and impressionistic facial features to create an unsettling sense of wrongness within the White House’s environment as if the entire place is ill without anyone realizing it.

Credit: IDW publishing

But soon this malignance makes itself known. It isn’t long before the entire, once close-knit family (established by an almost unbelievably wholesome family dinner in the White House dining room early on) begins drifting apart as the pressures of being the first family drive a wedge. Kelly’s responsibilities as POTUS keep her away from her family, forcing her husband, Eric — a doctor who gave up his career to be first husband — to shoulder more parental responsibilities alone. Her son, Kevin, becomes all too willing to fit into a new circle of friends at his new school, even if it means sacrificing his relationship with his sister Mara.

Mara’s ostracization is the most acute and becomes the story’s cornerstone. She spends her days being ridiculed by her peers without backing from her brother. With her mother often absent, she receives some support from her father but spends most of the night doomscrolling on her phone. Del Rey pulls these posts out of Mara’s phone, making her compete with them for space within the panel, visualizing the mental anxiety this habit is causing her, taking up more and more space with each instance.

The deeper into doom-scrolling that Mara gets, the more she seems to awaken something supernatural lurking in the forgotten room of the White House that she has made her sanctuary. It’s in this room that Mara wakes after a nightmare of nuclear apocalypse. Following this is the issue’s only splash page, which places Mara and her consoling parents in a corner of light as the darkness, and whatever lurks within it, surrounds and threatens to consume them. Mara’s anxiety, or perhaps that of her entire family, is haunting them.

Credit: idw Publishing

This isn’t a story specifically about corrosive media habits, even if it is a recurring point –another scene sees Del Rey’s brilliant layouts depicting shifting power dynamics as President Doyle goes from being in control during a press briefing to cornered as she’s barraged with bad-faith press questions. Mara’s plight is one aspect of a larger theme linking the infernal with mental health. While Mara spirals into depression, her mother is dealing with a crisis involving Havana Syndrome, that controversial diagnosis of a collection of mental health symptoms that have become fodder for conspiracies, seemingly linked here to something truly evil. The issue more subtly lampshades its focus on mental health in the repeated mention of Mary Todd Lincoln, the first lady who was Abraham Lincoln’s wife, whose history of manic episodes has led some historians and experts to believe she suffered from bipolar disorder. While the connection is not explicitly drawn in this issue, it may be that whatever lingers in the room Mara has been staying in had a hand in Mary Todd Lincoln’s struggles.

While those flaws are present, The Exorcism at Penn 1600 #1 is an impressive debut that draws readers in slowly but will likely have them fully enthralled by the final page-turn.

After celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, IDW Publishing is looking ahead to its next 25 years and beyond. The publisher behind the hit relaunch of its ongoing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series and original creator-owned titles like Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees has spent 2024 commemorating its 25-year legacy of award-winning comic book storytelling. However, IDW isn’t looking to stay stagnant and is already making moves to usher in a new era for its readers and fans. Part of these moves include the debut of an all-new IDW logo and rebrand as it looks to the next 25 years of entertainment.

ComicBook can exclusively reveal the new IDW Publishing logo, which will begin appearing on all IDW Publishing releases starting in 2025. Nathan Widick, Director of Design at IDW, was part of the team that helped conceive the new logo. “This rebrand was an opportunity for us to redefine the entire identity of IDW from the ground up. During the process, we went through hundreds of different designs, concepts, and ideas including a big push to retool our classic lightbulb logo. Ultimately, we decided that rather than looking back, it was time for us to look forward and show the world the new and bold direction of IDW with a dynamic and innovative identity.”

Widick added, “The simple and effective combination of the company’s identifying letters rendered in dynamic forward-moving angles perfectly captures the energy and inspirational attitude we are looking to cultivate with this next era of IDW.”

“As we turn the page to a new chapter at IDW Publishing, our rebrand is more than a new look—it’s a signal of our renewed commitment to creativity and storytelling. With this bold new logo, we are not just revisiting our roots but pushing forward to redefine what a comic book publisher can be,” said Aub Driver, Director of Marketing. “This rebrand is set to match the innovative and diverse storytelling our team is passionate about delivering. It marks a pivotal moment as we continue to engage our loyal fan base and welcome new readers worldwide.”

“This rebrand reflects our strategic vision to propel IDW Publishing into a future rich with possibilities,” stated Davidi Jonas, CEO/Publisher. “It represents our commitment to originality and excellence as we continue to lead in the comic book industry and underscores our resilience and readiness to adapt in a rapidly evolving entertainment landscape.”

How IDW Publishing celebrated its 25-year anniversary

Some of the highlights for IDW Publishing during its 25th-anniversary celebration include Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 launching with more than 300k orders from retailers, making it one of the biggest comics of the year; Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Naruto #1 receiving more than 100k orders from retailers; Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees gaining momentum and popularity with the release of each issue to the tune of the collected edition earning the second spot in the Top 20 graphic novels of September; the hiring of Bobby Curnow as Editor-in-Chief and Andy Khouri as the Senior Editor for TMNT; and more.

IDW will announce more plans for its future during New York Comic Con, which is taking place this week. Fans looking to learn the latest about IDW’s future will want to attend the IDW Publishing: The Next 25 Years Fears panel on Friday, October 18th at 2:15 pm EST in Room 1C03.

We’re less than a year out from The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Marvel Studios’ highly-anticipated reboot of the beloved super team. The new take on the ensemble features a star-studded ensemble cast, including Stranger Things‘ Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm / Human Torch. Thanks to promotional art from Marvel Studios, behind-the-scenes photos, and footage screened at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con and D23 Expo, fans have incrementally gotten a look at Quinn’s take on Johnny — and it definitely has them excited to see more. In particular, there is excitement to dive into Johnny’s long and storied history in the pages of Marvel Comics.fa

So, which Johnny Storm-centric comics deserve your attention before First Steps? Keep reading to check out our picks.

Fantastic Four #214

Published in 1979, Marv Wolfman and John Byrne’s Fantastic Four #214 delivers an intense sort of comedy of errors for Johnny. After the remainder of the Fantastic Four appear to have died from old age due to Skrull technology, Johnny goes to great lengths to revive his teammates, all while reflecting on his role on the team.

Arguably, the issue’s biggest goal at the time might have been to de-age Reed, Sue, and Ben to fit the present Marvel moment — but the installment still gives Johnny a unique opportunity to shine.

Fantastic Four #285

Similarly, Byrne’s Fantastic Four #285 provided an emotional reckoning of Johnny’s role as Human Torch. After a young fan lights himself on fire (and suffers third-degree burns) trying to emulate his hero, Johnny debates giving up superheroics altogether.

The issue not only acknowledged some of the real-world urban legend that surrounded Johnny by the time the issue was published in 1985, but brought fans a uniquely poignant character study.

Before the Fantastic Four: The Storms

Jumping ahead a few decades, Terry Kavanagh and Charles Adlard’s Before the Fantastic Four: The Storms took a new perspective on Johnny’s family life. The three-issue miniseries showed the siblings in their early years, as they are pulled into a larger-than-life fight tied to Dracula.

Before the Fantastic Four: The Storms is a quick, rewarding read filled with heartfelt moments for the two siblings — and for Johnny as a character.

Human Torch (2003)

Fan-favorite creators Karl Kesel and Skottie Young helped forge a new solo standing for Johnny, with the help of a twelve-issue ongoing series that began in 2003. The title not only updated Johnny’s design for the cartoony younger era, but pitted him against bizarre and personal threats in his community.

While this Human Torch miniseries is undeniably a product of the 2000s, it still has plenty of charm.

Spider-Man / Human Torch

Another wild adventure Johnny took at that time was courtesy of the Spider-Man / Human Torch miniseries from Dan Slott and Ty Templeton. The five-issue crossover united the two close friends in an array of madcap moments, with cameos from an array of villains.

While the history between Johnny and Peter Parker is a whole separate list in and of itself, this 2005 miniseries is a fun standalone entry point.

Marvel 2-in-One

In 2017, Chip Zdarsky and a number of artists revived the team-up book Marvel 2-In-One, with Johnny and Ben at the center. Across the ensuing year of issues, the friends worked together to save the rest of their found family, with all of the hijinks that that ensues.

Zdarsky’s work in the Marvel Universe already has plenty of high points, but Marvel 2-in-One is an especially fun component of that.

Fantastic Four: Marvel Snapshots

An entry in the string of Marvel Snapshots one-shots, Evan Dorkin, Sarah Dyer, and Benjamin Dewey’s Fantastic Four: Marvel Snapshots centers Johnny in some fun ways. Revolvng around his ten-year high school reunion, the issue places Johnny’s past, present, and future through a wacky proverbial wringer.

Published in 2020, Fantastic Four: Marvel Snapshots gives fans a fun modern distillation of who Johnny is, all while folding in some unexpected cameos.

Fantastic Four (2022) #25

While Ryan North and Carlos Gomez’s Fantastic Four #25 is among the most recent reading options tied to Johnny Storm, having only been published in September of 2024, it is already quickly and easily a must-read. The issue follows the team on a seemingly-ordinary excursion that leaves them stranded on a colorful alien world, only for Johnny’s budding romance with one of the aliens to complicate their efforts to return home.

While that premise might sound simple or silly, it not only produces some truly tender moments between Johnny and his new love, but it brings attention to the fact that he has periodically gotten the short end of the stick in the team’s world-saving efforts.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps will be released exclusively in theaters on Friday, July 25, 2025.

Marvel is set to introduce its newest hero to the rest of the universe, and now Marvel has given fans a first look at the green powerhouse known as Hulkette ahead of her big Spider-Boy debut. Hulkette was first created as part of last year’s New Champions variant covers, with Hulkette appearing on the cover for Sensational She-Hulk #1 from artist Mirka Andolfo, and now she’s getting her official introduction to the Marvel Comics universe in the pages of Spider-Boy #13. Those who pick up the issue won’t just meet Hulkette though, and that’s in addition to what Spider-Boy writer Dan Slott teases as a big surprise in regards to her origin story. The fun begins in Spider-Boy #13, and you can check out Hulkette on the Mark Bagley-created cover below.

Who Are The New Champions?

Hulkette is the latest New Champion to get her full introduction in the comics, and the other additions have been showing up across the Marvel Universe. Liberty showed up in the pages of Spider-Woman, while Maystorm called Ultimate X-Men home. Fantasma popped up in Ghost Rider: Robbie Reyes Special, and Amaranth was seen in the pages of Scarlet Witch #6.

Once Hulkette jumps in, everyone will have had their formal introduction, and fans will get to see their adventures play out in the upcoming New Champions series. We don’t know much about that series just yet, but Marvel is teasing that the new group of heroes will “change the Marvel Universe as we know it” in that series, so the stakes and the hype are already rather high for their big team-up.

Now Hulkette is up to bat, but fans will also be meeting her trainer Enormo. Her origin story will start to be revealed in Spider-Boy #13, but that story will be rolled out over time, and Slott is teasing a big surprise for Hulkette’s origin story as well.

Slott said, “You’ll get a chance to meet Hulkette and her trainer, Enormo, as they get drawn into the action-packed events of Spider-Boy and Spider-Girl’s overseas adventure in Madripoor! We’ll learn more about Hulkette and her powers as she faces off against Spider-Boy and Daredevil. There’s a big surprise in store for Marvel fans when we finally drop the secret of her origins… but for now, if you want to see this pint-sized powerhouse throw her first punches on the page, this is the issue where her journey begins.”

Those who have been keeping up with Spider-Boy have seen him go on quite the journey, as he’s been bounced around different universes and worlds in order to restore the history that no one can seem to remember. He finally got his wish, though not everything is exactly as he had hoped. That led to a team-up with Daredevil and the introduction of a new Spider-Girl, so to say Bailey’s life got more complicated is an understatement. Hulkette will only complicate things further, but hopefully when all is said and done they can settle their differences.

Zootopia 2

A Zootopia sequel series is hoppening. Comic book publisher Dynamite Entertainment announced that Disney’s Zootopia, an ongoing comic series set after the events of Walt Disney Animation’s 2016 movie, will release in January 2025 — months before Zootopia 2 burrows into theaters on Nov. 26, 2025. A police procedural, the Zootopia comic book will follow ZPD Officers Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde on their biggest case since the duo foiled a baaaaaad plot by the sheepish Deputy Mayor Bellwether to turn the predators inhabiting the animal metropolis into savages.

From writer Jeff Parker (Marvel’s Thunderbolts, Dynamite’s Kings Watch) and artist Alessandro Ranaldi (Dynamite’s Hercules sequel series and Disney Villains: Hades), Dynamite’s Zootopia series will take “fans through the captivating world of Disney’s Zootopia and a procedural string of cases mounting to one epic tale.”

“The team and I know how eager the audience has been for more stories in the world of Zootopia and we thank Disney for giving us the chance to tell them,” Parker said in a statement. “Readers are going to love how Alessandro brings Judy and Nick to life, you can truly hear their voices as you read. Speaking of that, all I have to do to get Nick Wilde’s voice right is imagine editor Nate Cosby saying anything. And don’t worry, there’ll be plenty of the booming Chief Bogo! Zootopia has so much potential for more crime-solving animal adventure, I hope this is just the tip of the iceberg for the Dynamite Disney comics.”

The mystery adventure series investigates a new case every month before Disney Animation’s Zootopia 2, which sees brave rabbit cop Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) and fox friend Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) team up again to crack a case involving the creepy, slithery, highly venomous viper Gary (Loki‘s Ke Huy Quan).

Here’s how Dynamite’s Disney line describes the all-ages Zootopia comic book series:

“It’s another beautiful day in the bustling city of Zootopia, where every animal is free to strive to realize their full potential — and one of the most successful among the pack is Tripp Zebrando, owner of the PB&J cell phone company. Their high-tech devices have become the can’t-miss gadget for every citizen of Zootopia, and they’re about to launch their latest flagship model with a huge publicity event. Everything goes awry when someone has it out for PB&J, set on sabotaging the event and the company by bringing the whole house down — right on top of the unsuspecting crowd!

“Luckily this is a case for ZPD’s finest, as Officers Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde rush to the scene to keep the peace, contain the chaos, and investigate the mystery at the bottom of it all. As they sniff out clues and culprits, their discoveries in the aftermath of this seemingly isolated incident will lead them down tracks into the biggest case since the disgraced downfall of Deputy Mayor Bellwether, as seen in the iconic original film.”

Disney’s Zootopia #1 goes on sale January 2025 from Dynamite.

A new artist is joining writer Jason Aaron in IDW Publishing’s relaunch of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The new era in TMNT storytelling is officially underway for its 40th anniversary, with each issue of the relaunched Teenage Mutant Ninja ongoing series focusing on one of the four Turtles. Aaron and his artistic collaborators have slowly brought the Turtles back together, which will culminate with them returning to the streets (and sewers) of New York City. A return to the Big Apple calls for an artist who can put their unique talents on display for all TMNT fans to enjoy. IDW has found the perfect candidate in Juan Ferreyra (Batman & RobinGreen Arrow).

Juan Ferreyra’s run on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles kicks off with Issue #6. Eisner-nominated artist Jorge Fornes (BatmanRorschach) also joins Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #6 as the cover artist. Comic fans have seen Ferreyra’s work on interiors and covers at both Marvel and DC on titles such as Green Arrow, Deadly Neighborhood Spider-Man, King in Black: Thunderbolts, New Suicide Squad, Killmonger, and more.

The covers for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #6-7 show the type of masterful art from Ferreyra that is in store for the Heroes in a Half Shell. In particular, the cover of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #7 features the four Turtles battling the Foot Clan during a rainstorm, as they leap from buildings and fire escapes to enter into battle. And then there are quieter moments as the Turtles look to be reflecting in interior art for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #6.

“Getting to be the artist in TMNT makes me super happy and excited on so many levels. The first one is exciting for the little Juan that lives in me,” reminisced Ferreyra. “I was a big Turtles fan when I was 11-12 years old, I used to draw them all the time. In fact, when I told one of my best friends that I was going to draw the TMNT comic next, he told me that one of his first memories of me drawing was when he saw me drawing the Turtles and how amazed he was at how I was able to draw them so accurately.”

“The other level is the grown up Juan and the opportunity that I have to give my take on TMNT for a full arc and working with one of my all time favorite writers,” he continued. “Working with Jason for a full arc on anything would’ve been a dream come true, so when they told me Jason would be writing it I had one of the biggest smiles I’ve had in a long time. The most amazing thing is that all of that was before I started drawing anything, and now that I’m halfway through the first issue I can tell that it is way more satisfying and fun than what I could have ever anticipated!”
