Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio return!

Daredevil: Born Again has a confirmed release date on Disney+. During New York Comic-Con’s Marvel panel, Vincent D’Onofrio and Charlie Cox revealed that their MCU series kicks off on March 4, 2025. Before now, Marvel fans only knew that the title would be up around the first half of the year. With this confirmation, there’s something else for MCU die-hards to obsess over once Captain America: Brave New World flies into theaters. As the holiday season approaches, there was some feeling we would get some sort of announcement about Charlie Cox’s return as Daredevil. It’s been a while since we saw his prospective Avenger back in She-Hulk. In addition, D’Onofrio’s emotional turn in Echo represented his last Marvel cameo too. It’s full-steam ahead towards 2025 on Disney.

A lot of hype has circled Daredevil: Born Again since the moment it was announced. The vocal fanbase for the Netflix series has talked so much about how much this show meant to them. When Marvel Studios got the first drafts of the show back, they opted to retool a lot of it and go with new directors because of how anticipated this all was. Marvel Television head of streaming Brad Winderbaum is confident in the series. The Official Marvel Podcast asked him about Daredevil: Born Again and he thinks it shares a lot of DNA with a current Marvel Studios favorite. “Daredevil is incredible. It’s similar in some ways to X-Men ’97 because it’s reviving something that the fans love,” Winderbaum said earlier this year. “But it’s taking it in a new direction.”

daredevil-born-again-suit-red-eyes-look.jpg
Daredevil’s new look is a winner.

“These characters have matured. The universe is different than it was. Things have changed. Society’s changed. Matt and Wilson have changed, and their characters are going to collide in ways we’ve never seen before,” Winderbaum shared. “It’s no longer enough to try to murder each other. There’s a whole game of politics at play.”

With all of this news today, the positive press for the show continues unabated. It seems like a firm release date will only ignite calls for more details about the show. New York Comic-Con should render some more tidbits about the series and tease fans with even more hints about what Matt Murdock is going to be up to in 2025. This year of Marvel Studios releases really puts the unnecessary fervor about the last year and change into perspective. 2023 was weird for a number of reasons. (Actors/writers strike, inflation paranoia, global conflict, etc.) This year, a mix of fan favorites has gotten sentiment on social media right back up to where it was around the end of 2022 or so. Now, Marvel is hoping to carry that momentum into 2025.

Netflix’s Daredevil established a number of actors as seminal depictions of beloved characters, resulting in figures like Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio reprising their roles as Daredevil and Wilson Fisk, respectively, in Marvel Cinematic Universe projects after the series’ cancellation. While Cox, D’Onofrio, and other Netflix stars are set to return in Daredevil: Born Again, Rob Morgan won’t be appearing as Turk in the project. Despite Turk’s apparent absence, Morgan confirmed he would be open to such an opportunity, though that he’s mainly focused on the all-new Peacock series Teacup. Teacup is set to premiere on Peacock on October 10th.

“I’m focused on whatever comes my way. If the call comes and it’s attractive, we’ll entertain it,” Morgan confirmed to ComicBook about his connection to Turk. “But right now we’re looking forward to Teacup dropping on Peacock October 10th, letting out two episodes every week, all the way up until October 31st.”

While Morgan debuted as Turk in Daredevil, he would become a key component of that universe, going on to appear in Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, The Punisher, and The Defenders miniseries. Given that supporting Daredevil actors like Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson were both confirmed to appear in Born Again, fans thought an announcement about Morgan’s return would be imminent, though even after social media movements about the role, it seems as though either Turk will be absent from the upcoming series or a new actor will take on the mantle.

Morgan isn’t the only DefendersVerse actor whose future in the MCU is uncertain, as Luke Cage‘s Mike Colter, Jessica Jones‘ Krysten Ritter, and Iron Fist‘s Finn Jones have all seemingly been sidelined in the franchise. What’s entirely possible, however, is that Disney+ wants to see how strongly Born Again resonates with audiences and, if proven to be a major success, the studio could reassess how best to bring back those fan-favorite performers.

Even though Morgan won’t be appearing in Born Again, he won’t be absent from our TV screens entirely, as he plays a pivotal role in Teacup.

Teacup follows a disparate group of people in rural Georgia who must come together in the face of a mysterious threat in order to survive. Inspired by the New York Times bestselling novel Stinger by Robert McCammon.

Teacup premieres on Peacock on October 10th. Daredevil: Born Again is expected to premiere in the spring of 2025.

Daredevil: Born Again star Vincent D’Onofrio is dropping some massive hints about a classic storyline being adapted in the show. During a recent panel at Dragon Con, a fan asked the Kingpin actor if he would be interested in playing a version of the Marvel villain from the beloved “Devil’s Reign” storyline. There’s been a ton of speculation about Donafrio playing exactly that role in the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again. So when confronted with the direct question, the actor picked the best possible solution in teasing something without giving the entire game away. Needless to say, the people in attendance were shocked at getting an answer to the question that even grazed the truth. It’s clear Marvel Studios is swinging for the fences with the upcoming show.

“That’s a very interesting question,” D’Onofrio began, treading lightly (h/t to PopVerse for the transcription.) “I cannot answer that because we have a new season coming out of Daredevil. I’m sure you get it. Otherwise, I would just flap my lips for the next thirty minutes and it would be so much fun, but that’s not happening.”

marvel-kingpin-mcu-devils-reign.png
What a classic.

The ending of Echo all but teased Wilson Fisk getting into the political Arena in New York City. That would pose problems for Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock and any of the Marvel Heroes operating out of that area. As Marvel Studios looks to try to hook people in with as many fan-favorite characters as possible in the coming years, setting up a ground-level conflict is something that social media has clamored for in recent months. Maybe, they’ll get what they want.

Daredevil: Born Again Takes Cues From X-Men ’97

DAREDEVIL-BORN-AGAIN-XMEN-97-COMPARED
Two fun titles.

Marvel Studios’ 2025 lineup has a bunch of titles that everyone is looking forward to. But, the highest on the list might be Daredevil: Born Again. Fans of the Netflix series have been arguing for a revival for years on social media. Now, with the show so close at hand, we’re learning so much about the tone of the upcoming release. San Diego Comic-Con delivered new footage of Charlie Cox’s vigilante. But, the larger world hasn’t been treated to that clip yet. One of the most encouraging Marvel developments has been the success of X-Men ’97.

It feels like the studio is very aware there’s a lane for mature stories. During an episode of The Official Marvel Podcast over the summer, Marvel TV’s head of streaming, Brad Winderbaum said that Daredevil’s next appearance would be taking a few cues from the beloved Animated series. “Daredevil is incredible. It’s similar in some ways to X-Men ’97 because it’s reviving something that the fans love,” Winderbaum told the host. “But it’s taking it in a new direction.”

“These characters have matured. The universe is different than it was. Things have changed. Society’s changed. Matt and Wilson have changed, and their characters are going to collide in ways we’ve never seen before,” Winderbaum mused. “It’s no longer enough to try to murder each other. There’s a whole game of politics at play.” That seems like an unsubtle allusion to the Mayor Fisk development too. But, just enough deniability to keep us all guessing. It’s just nice to be discussing Daredevil again, and this time along with the rest of the MCU.

Daredevil: Born Again‘s first look teases the multiple costumes that Matt Murdock will be using over the course of the Disney+ series. In the new Marvel 85th anniversary video, fans got to see Daredevil’s new red suit and glowing eyes firsthand. This is a switch from the last time we saw Charlie Cox’s hero in the MCU. His short appearance in Echo saw him in all black as he investigated what was going on with Wilson Fisk. So, The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen has a bit of a changing identity going on. (Echo‘s appearance was a flashback for what it’s worth.)

A few weeks ago at D23, Marvel Studios previewed more of Daredevil: Born Again. One part of that trailer that had the Internet talking was Matt Murdock having multiple helmets for different suits in his closet. It seems like the Disney+ series is going to have Daredevil in multiple looks in this show and the new first look confirms it. While most of us suspected there would be some lenses at play, the glowing eyes are a fantastic touch that ratcheted the excitement up another level.

matt-murdock-daredevil-born-again-marvel-trailer-charlie-cox.jpg
Just look at those eyes!

Marvel Animation’s head Brad Winderbaum teased what else fans can expect out of Daredevil: Born Again during a recent appearance on The Official Marvel Podcast. Like X-Men ’97 just a few months ago, taking a look towards the past benefitted this show a lot. Fans of the Netflix Daredevil series should be amped up by everything being said about Born Again.

“Daredevil is incredible. It’s similar in some ways to X-Men ’97 because it’s reviving something that the fans love,” Winderbaum began. “But it’s taking it in a new direction. These characters have matured. The universe is different than it was. Things have changed. Society’s changed. Matt and Wilson have changed, and their characters are going to collide in ways we’ve never seen before. It’s no longer enough to try to murder each other. There’s a whole game of politics at play.”

Will We See The Yellow Again?

she-hulk-daredevil.jpg
A nod to the character’s long history.

She-Hulk brought Daredevil into the mix and Charlie Cox was thrilled to be wearing the yellow and red costume from the character’s early comic adventures. He talked to Variety about getting to don that suit and how surprised he was to discover that the throwback look was in the plans!

“When we were getting ready to shoot it, they took me out to Los Angeles to have a suit fitting, which I just assumed was to make sure that the old one still fit,” Cox told them. “I showed up at this warehouse. Hanging in a bag on a railing was my suit that I recognized as the one I’d worn in the show before.”

The star continued, “While I was waiting, there was one computer-generated drawing on the wall of some other superhero. I was looking at it, like ‘Oh, that guy’s cool.’ And then I looked more carefully, and I was like, ‘Wait, that guy’s me.’ It was a rendering of this gold and red suit and I was like, “Oh my God, that is so cool.” It’s such a great homage to some of the earlier Daredevil runs. I got goosebumps thinking about this moment, putting it on and the fans’ reaction.”

In Marvel’s just-released 85th anniversary celebration video, the studio has provided fans with a first official look at Charlie Cox’s return tot he role of Matt Murdoch/Daredevil in Daredevil: Born Again. The title, a play on both the fact that Cox is making his return to Marvel after years away and on the character’s Catholic roots, is headed to Disney+ in 2025. It’s a quick glimpse of Cox in bloody combat, but after years of not seeing the character in costume, it’s been enough to get fans on social media excited to see what’s next.

At D23 last month, Disney’s Daredevil: Born Again space was covered with graffiti, seemingly suggesting the villain Muse is likely going to play a significant role in the upcoming first season on Disney+. Created by Charles Soule and Ron Garney, Muse first appeared in 2016, and only lasted a couple of years before his death in Daredevil #600. The character was a mass muderer who considered himself an artist, and painted murals with the blood of his victims.

Charlie Cox as Daredevil

In the years since Netflix’s Daredevil (and indeed the rest of their Marvel Knights-style batch of M-rated Marvel shows) was cancelled, fans have lobbied to bring Charlie Cox back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor appeared briefly in Spider-Man: No Way Home — but not as Daredevil, only as Murdoch, who opted to represent Spider-Man after the hero was unmasked to the world. Whether that brief appearance will play a bigger role in the MCU is yet to be determined, but technically Daredevil shares his arch-nemesis Kingpin with Spider-Man.

In Daredevil: Born Again, Charlie Cox returns as Matt Murdock / Daredevil and he’ll be joined by Vincent D’Onofrio (Wilson Fisk / Kingpin), Jon Bernthal (Frank Castle / Punisher), Wilson Bethel (Benjamin Poindexter / Bullseye), Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page), Elden Henson (Foggy Nelson), Ayelet Zurer (Vanessa Fisk), Margarita Levieva, Michael Gandolfini, Genneya Walton, and Arty Froushan.

Daredevil: Born Again is expected to be released on Disney+ starting March 2025.

As audiences get ready to celebrate the debut of Marvel’s Daredevil: Born Again, fans are already starting to clamor for a second series featuring the Man Without Fear. Wednesday afternoon, Marvel’s official social media channels shared an animated Daredevil clip, showing off how the character could look in a different medium. As you might expect, fans quickly applauded the work done on the clip, asking Marvel to start development on a Daredevil animated series.

“We NEED an DD animated series like Batman Animated Series/Cape Crusader,” one Facebook commenter wrote. Another added, “Yeah, this should be a part of the Marvel Animation universe!”

All of Marvel’s animated releases are now produced by Marvel Animation, a brand new subsidiary of Marvel Studios. The studio has been working on shows that are both canon to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, and shows that made to stand on their own. Interestingly enough, the MCU’s Daredevil Charlie Cox will voice the character in Marvel Animation’s Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.

“I went into the studio and did some voiceover for that a long time ago. Years ago, during when I was shooting She-Hulk, so I think that was 2021,” Cox recalled during an appearance at Fan Expo Boston 2024. “I’ve just seen a couple of scenes that I’ve voiced. And I haven’t even seen the scenes, I just saw the early drawings of it. That’s all I know.”

“I haven’t seen any of it, I have no idea what the story is, but it’s cool,” the actor clarified. “It’s cool that [Daredevil’s] in it. I’m excited about it.”

Marvel Studios’ upcoming film slate includes Captain America: Brave New World (February 14th, 2025), Thunderbolts* (May 5th, 2025), The Fantastic Four: First Steps (July 25th, 2025), Blade (November 7th, 2025), Avengers: Doomsday (May 1st, 2026), and Avengers: Secret Wars (May 7th, 2027).

Marvel Television’s Agatha All Along is set to premiere on Disney+ in September, with Daredevil: Born Again debuting next March. Marvel Animation has yet to set dates for the second season of X-Men ’97 or the premiere of Black Panther: Eyes of Wakanda, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, and Marvel Zombies.

Those in attendance at D23 Friday night were treated to the first teaser trailer for Daredevil: Born Again, a revival and spiritual fourth season of the fan-favorite Netflix series. Since the show is now directly connected to its predecessor after a massive creative overhaul, it only makes sense most of its characters are returning. Joining the show’s ensemble is none other than one Benjamin Poindexter, the Daredevil villain perhaps better known as Bullseye.

In the footage screened at D23, Poindexter can be seen handcuffed while wearing an orange jumpsuit. It’s unclear when exactly the moment takes place, and whether it’s after the events of Daredevil Season Three, or if it’s after events that take place in Daredevil: Born Again. The character was, after all, spotted on set seemingly shooting his weapons as Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) and Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll).

Whatever the case, it’s clear Bullseye will be spending at least some time behind bars. Not being able to explore the Bullseye / Daredevil storyline, Charlie Cox once said, was the saddest realization when Daredevil was originally canceled after its third season.

“Doing Season 3, with all of the Poindexter stuff, the Bullseye stuff, as it was slowly being revealed, I was just like ‘Ah! This is so cool!'” Cox said in a 2019 con appearance. “And I love how what they did with the show… they don’t overdo it. It just takes a little bit of time. As I was reading the scripts, I’m like, ‘He’s Bullseye! Is he? Yeah! Maybe not?’ You’re just not sure… When they showed the trailer for the first time, we all watched it and they showed the image of the cap with the bullseye. Everyone was freaking out, man! It was so cool.

Charlie Cox returns as Matt Murdock / Daredevil and he’ll be joined by Vincent D’Onofrio (Wilson Fisk / Kingpin), Jon Bernthal (Frank Castle / Punisher), Wilson Bethel (Benjamin Poindexter / Bullseye), Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page), Elden Henson (Foggy Nelson), Ayelet Zurer (Vanessa Fisk), Margarita Levieva, Michael Gandolfini, Genneya Walton, and Arty Froushan. It’s unclear if Sandrine Holt, Nikki M. James, Clark Johnson, Michael Gaston, and Harris Yulin will remain in the series after the aforementioned creative overhaul.

As many fans expected from a big-budget multiversal movie, Deadpool & Wolverine was packed to the brim with surprising cameos. In fact, now that the movie has been in theaters over a week, Marvel Studios is officially revealing looks at some of the biggest cameos and supporting characters. There was one cameo, however, that everybody seemed to miss. Light spoilers up ahead for Deadpool & Wolverine! Proceed with caution if you’ve yet to see the movie.

Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin) has their fair share of villain back-ups in the film, including a variant of Bullseye from Fox’s previous Daredevil film franchise. Although Colin Farrell didn’t appear in the flick, another variant—played by actor Curtis Small—can be seen with the same exact forehead tattoo.

It’s unclear if Farrell was ever in talks to reprise his role, especially after Deadpool producer Simon Kinberg played extremely coy earlier this year.

“If I speak about anything Marvel-related, you will see a sniper’s dot on my forehead and I will be no more! So I can say that I’m pretty excited about all the things that, Marvel and Kevin [Feige] and the MCU are doing with, characters that I’ve loved and lived with for, you know, decades of my life now,” Kinberg told CoveredGeekly at the time.

In Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & WolverineDeadpool (Ryan Reynolds) change the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). The film also stars Matthew Macfadyen as Paradox, and Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova, with the return of Deadpool alums Morena Baccarin as Vanessa Carlysle, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Karan Soni as Dopinder, Stefan Kapičić as Piotr Rasputin/Colossus, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Rob Delaney as Peter, and Lewis Tan as Shatterstar. Aaron Stanford is returning as Pyro from the X-Men film series, with Jennifer Garner rumored to return as Elektra Natchios.

Kevin Feige, Ryan Reynolds, Shawn Levy and Lauren Shuler Donner produce with Louis D’Esposito, Wendy Jacobson, Mary McLaglen, Josh McLaglen, Rhett ReesePaul Wernick, George Dewey and Simon Kinberg serving as executive producers. Deadpool & Wolverine is written by Ryan Reynolds & Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick & Zeb Wells & Shawn Levy. Deadpool & Wolverine is now exclusively in theaters.

Daredevil star Rosario Dawson says that she’s heard the fan cries for her to return in Daredevil: Born Again. During an appearance at Fan Expo Boston, the Claire Temple actress says that all Marvel would have to do is pick up the phone and she’d be there. Daredevil: Born Again is still in production after a retooling led to the show being re-worked to be closer to the Netflix Daredevil show. Dawson has seen a lot of her former co-stars recently and sadly she’s not among the number of returning faces for the Disney+ revival. However, that doesn’t mean that everything is completely a wash just yet. The fans basically helped make this happen, maybe they’ve got one more miracle in them.

“I have to say that was one of the things that I signed the most while I was here. It’s so great to be able to spend time with Jeph [Loeb]. We were at dinner last night and I got to see Vincent [D’Onofrio] and Charlie [Cox] and everyone,” Dawson told the assembled crowd (credit to Collider for their moderation of the panel.) “So I would absolutely love it… I would love to hang with them and play with them again. That was such a great time. And, you know, Marvel, Disney, they got my number, they know where I am.”

Rosario Dawson Wants To Return For Daredevil: Born Again

Claire Temple was a fan favorite.

While Dawson has been busy over in Star Wars making Ahsoka, the MCU revival of Daredevil has rolled on. But, the fans have been asking for specific names all the while , and Claire Temple is one of the main ones to come up. (Even as the filming commenced in New York City, you had old viewers asking about previous Vanessa Fisk actress Ayelet Zurer.) So, it’s clear all the chatter gets back to the actors. In Dawson’s case, she told ScreenRant that she’d love to return but that larger decision is basically out of her hands.

“Oh yeah. For sure. You don’t even see her in that last ‘tell Claire to go home’ moment on Luke Cage. So what is that? You know it’s terrible. So, yeah, I’d be super curious, but I’m just so stoked for everybody, though. It’s been a long time coming,” Dawson told the website. “I was really excited to know that all of our shows are actually part of the MCU now, with Charlie [Cox] and Vincent [D’Onofrio] coming over into these different projects now. So, yeah, 18 episodes [of Daredevil: Born Again]? I’m there! Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, they know where I am.”

Charlie Cox is getting animated about his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Marvel’s Daredevil star will voice the black-suited Daredevil in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, the new animated series from X-Men ’97 producers Marvel Animation. It was announced in 2022 that Cox had signed on to reprise his role, this time in animated form, in the MCU-based Spider-Man prequel that was originally titled Spider-Man: Freshman Year when Marvel Studios revealed the project way back in 2021.

I’m excited about it.” (Cox’s Daredevil and Daredevil: Born Again co-star Vincent D’Onofrio, however, won’t be reprising his role as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin due to the character’s complex rights situation; unlike Daredevil, Marvel Studios shares the rights to Kingpin with Sony.)

Cox starred in the title role of Marvel’s Netflix-aired Daredevil and The Defenders series between 2015 and 2018. He later made a cameo as blind attorney Matt Murdock in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, and reprised the role again in the Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and Echo. After his stint on the Spider-Man animated series, Cox will return to the MCU proper — in live-action — opposite D’Onofrio’s Kingpin in Marvel Studios’ Daredevil: Born Again in March 2025.

Jeff Trammel (Disney’s Amphibia and The Owl House, Cartoon Network’s Craig of the Creek) created and executive produces Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, which “follows Peter Parker on his way to becoming Spider-Man in the MCU,witha journey unlike we’ve ever seen and a style that celebrates thecharacter’s early comic book roots,” per the official synopsis.

Set during Peter Parker’s freshman year of high school, the series takes place in an alternate version of the MCU before the events of Captain America: Civil War. In this multiverse remix, it’s Norman Osborn — not Tony Stark of the Avengers — who mentors the 15-year-old Peter (voiced by What If…?‘s Hudson Thames).

“Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is amazing, to saythe least,” Brad Winderbaum, the head of streaming, television, and animation for Marvel Studios, recently told ComicBook, adding the show is “very much like a cut” from the classic Stan Lee and Steve Ditko era of the comic books that ran from 1962 to 1966.

“It’s Peter Parker back in high school just trying to make itwork, take care of his aunt, completely broke, and having to be asuperhero. It’s so essentially Spider-Man,” Winderbaum said. “And what Jeff Trammell did, which I think people are going to love, is hebuilt this ensemble of characters around Peter that you fall in lovewith. Similarly, just because it’s long-form storytelling, as thoserelationships brew when the stakes rise in that first season, thingsfeel really tragic and dangerous, and pretty incredible. So, I love thatshow.”

That cast of characters includes Kari Wahlgren (Spidey and His Amazing Friends) as Aunt May, Grace Song (Kidding) as Nico Minoru of the Runaways, Zeno Robinson (Transformers: Earth Spark) as Harry Osborn, Hugh Dancy (Law & Order) as OttoOctavius / Doctor Octopus, Eugene Byrd (Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) as a high school-aged Lonnie Lincoln (who is not yet the supervillain Tombstone), and friends Amadeus Cho, PearlPangan, and Jean Foucault. Along with Doc Ock, other villains who will appear in the series include Unicorn,Chameleon, Scorpion, Speed Demon, Tarantula, the Rhino, Butane, and CarmelaBlack.

Marvel Studios’ Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is expected to premiere later in 2024 on Disney+.

Daredevil: Born Again is set to arrive on Disney+ next year, continuing the legacy of Netflix’s beloved Daredevil series. One element of the original show that has taken on a life of its own is the one-take fight scenes, which became a staple of many of Matt Murdock / Daredevil’s (Charlie Cox) television appearances. During a recent panel at Fan Expo Boston (via Collider), Cox elaborated on how the Daredevil crew creates these oners, and teased that “those who are excited by [oners] will not be disappointed” once Born Again is released.

“There’s different types of oners,” Cox explained. “A oner is a fight scene that takes place in one shot, without [cuts.] So there’s things called a true oner. So a true oner is when it really is one take and there’s no editing, there’s no cuts, there’s no morphing, which is when you move the camera past something that is a solid color, and then you can technically then cut during the black of that. So, if the camera moves past someone’s black shirt, there’s a moment during that where the whole screen is black, and you can then stitch a different take after that. So it looks like it’s a oner, but it’s actually not.”

What Is Daredevil: Born Again About?

Daredevil: Born Again will follow the latest battle between Matt Murdock / Daredevil (Charlie Cox) and Wilson Fisk / Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio). New cast members for the series will include Michael Gandolfini, Lou Taylor Pucci, and Margarita Levieva. Jon Bernthal will also return in his previous role of Frank Castle / The Punisher, with Elden Henson reprising his role as Foggy Nelson and Deborah Ann Woll reprising her role as Karen Page.

“I think it’s definitely a new show. It’s not the Netflix show. It’s definitely a new show,” D’Onofrio told ComicBook.com in a recent interview. “I mean, all I can say is that Charlie [Cox] and I are not bored. We are having a great time. We have a great cast, and I think everybody else is having a great time too. Charlie’s one of my favorite people, and I know that he comes here every day ready to knock it out of the park and you know how I am, I’m totally into this part, so I’m there for the same reason.”

“We’re really just delivering. It’s a lot of work. Charlie’s amazing because he has to do all the stunts and stuff, so he’s in constant training and learning different things,” D’Onofrio added. “But the scenes are great. I’m trying to skirt around specifics, but I can only say that it is a different show and it feels like a different show.”

Is Daredevil: Born Again Getting Changed?

This past fall, a report revealed that Daredevil: Born Again was beginning to be creatively retooled, a decision made when production paused due to the SAG-AFTRA actors’ strike. According to the reporting, Marvel Studios was able to review Born Again‘s existing footage, which covered multiple episodes, and decide that they are seeking a new creative direction for the show. As a result, previous head writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman departed the series.

The directing duo of Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, who have helmed episodes of Moon Knight and Loki Season 2 for Marvel Studios, are set to direct all remaining episodes of Daredevil: Born Again‘s first season.

Daredevil: Born Again is expected to be released on Disney+ in March of 2025. Jessica Jones star Krysten Ritter addressed her possible Marvel return. Collider had to ask her about the fateful day she posted an Instagram photo of a fan-favorite shirt while Daredevil: Born Again was filming. Of course, that social media post set the Internet ablaze. While Ritter didn’t confirm her involvement with the Daredevil reboot, she did address that famous fashion choice. It turns out, she still owns that shirt and reaffirmed her love for Jessica Jones. While that attention flew towards her, there has been no formal announcement about her character’s formal MCU introduction. However, with Charlie Cox and Jon Bernthal already in the fold, it feels like a return is just a formality at this point.

“No, I didn’t. I have the shirt. It’s a great t-shirt,” Ritter told Collider. “It’s one of my favorites and I was wearing it. I was like, ‘Oh, cute! Is anyone gonna recognize my shirt?’ But yeah, I did notice that it made some waves. That was fun.

“She added, “That means a lot to me, as well. The character means so much to me, as well. It’s funny that one little thoughtless Instagram story of my cute t-shirt that I love [got that reaction].”

Would Krysten Ritter Ever Come Back To Marvel?

jessica-jones-krysten-ritter-return-marvel.jpg
Jessica Jones back in the Netflix days.

Ritter has gotten used to answering questions about Jessica Jones. ComicBook has interviewed the actress recently about her run on the Netflix fan-favorite. In a previous conversation, Ritter talked about the possibility of coming back for Daredevil: Born Again. The Defenders look like they’re in shape for a reunion and that is music to the ears of all those people that really missed the street level Marvel hero team.

“I absolutely love Jessica more than anything. And I loved those years playing her,” Ritter told us. “If there was ever an opportunity for her to pop up anywhere, I would be the first [to say yes]. I may or may not have the jacket ready to go in my closet. So, you never know, but if I ever had the opportunity to play her again, I would be so thrilled.”

“I’m always down to do it again,” she continued during our interview. “It was an absolute dream. And I love her. I love that character. I love the way that she connected with so many people in a deep way and resonated with women and girls in an exciting way. I am just so proud that I got to play such an iconic character.”

Daredevil: Born Again‘s Vincent D’Onofrio says that the Disney+ show wasn’t originally planned to crossover with the Netflix series. Marvel Studios is bringing Daredevil back with a reboot next year and the series star spoke to TV Insider about the links to the previous incarnation of the show. He was joined by Charlie Cox up on the Disney Upfronts stage this week to talk Daredevil: Born Again. It seems like Marvel Studios decided to lean more into the Netflix series when the time came to evaluate the work they had already completed on the reboot.

Cox told the outlet that “a lot” of crossover was coming in Daredevil: Born Again. But, his co-star quickly clarified, “It originally wasn’t going to be at all, but now it’s a lot.” That would prompt some questions about where this change of heart originated from. But, while palace intrigue and weird gossip rule the day, a more simple explanation does exist: the writers and actors strike. It’s well-documented at this point, the executives at Marvel Studios took a look at the existing footage from the upcoming series and decided to tweak their course of action. Cox thinks both fan pressure and the studio had their roles to play. He said, “I think [it’s] the fans. I think [it’s] the studio as well.”

Daredevil: Born Again & Marvel’s Creative Retooling

The crew is back together for Daredevil: Born Again.

If you don’t want to take our word for it, D’Onofrio also thinks the creative retooling process for Marvel Studios is where a lot of these decisons came from. He talked to The Hollywood Reporter about Daredevil: Born Again and its links to the Netflix show. In essence, the new Disney+ series is directly connected to what’s come before. (Marvel’s head of streaming, Brad Winderbaum said the exact same thing to ScreenRant months ago at this point.) Still, because the fans like to work themselves into a lather over Internet takes and speculation, a lot of them won’t believe a word of any of this before the actual series hits the streamer. For now, check out what the Kingpin actor had to say on the matter.

“During our restart of all the creative on Daredevil: Born Again, all the creatives got together and said, ‘Look, this is how we’ve got to do it now.’ So we are for sure only speaking about it in terms of being directly connected to the original Daredevil, and that’s a great thing,” D’Onofrio explained. “It brings in a lot of cool stories and all the collateral story that happened in those original three seasons. So we now get to start this Born Again situation with all of that history behind us and the outcome of all that history. So we’re all talking about Daredevil: Born Again in those terms now.”

Daredevil is born again. When Netflix announced that the Marvel Television series was cancelled after three seasons in 2018, fans kept the faith that Charlie Cox would don the horn-headed cowl once again in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “Although it’s painful for the fans, we feel it best to close this chapter on a high note,” a statement read at the time, adding: “The Daredevil character will live on in future projects for Marvel.”

Cox eventually reprised his role as blind lawyer Matt Murdock on the big screen in Spider-Man: No Way Home and suited up for the Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and he’ll next return as the guardian devil of Hell’s Kitchen in Marvel TV’s Daredevil: Born Again, slated to premiere next year on Disney+. Though the stunt-heavy series is “really physically demanding,” Cox, 41, hopes to continue in the role opposite co-star Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk/Kingpin.

“My knees are not what they were ten years ago, nor is my back,” Cox, reflecting on his first decade as Daredevil, told Deadline at Disney’s upfronts presentation. The actor then remarked that he underwent shoulder surgery during the Hollywood labor strikes that paused production on the series last summer.

“It’s a really physically demanding show, which I love. We wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s kind of what makes it what it is,” Cox said. “There will definitely come a time where I am not able to do it anymore, but for right now, [we’ll] just keep doing the best job we can and loving it. I feel incredibly grateful to still be making the show, and hopefully we’ve got another 10 years in us.”

“We don’t get to work together a lot,” added D’Onofrio, unable to disclose exactly how many scenes he shares with Cox’s Daredevil. “Not many,” Cox said, before clarifying that Daredevil and Kingpin have only had “probably a handful of scenes” in three seasons of Marvel’s Daredevil. (Both actors appeared in Marvel Studios’ Echo, but their characters didn’t cross paths.)

Cox and D’Onofrio’s Daredevil co-stars Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson also reprise their respective roles as Karen Page and Foggy Nelson, with Wilson Bethel back as the assassin Bullseye and Jon Bernthal returning as the gun-toting vigilante Frank Castle/The Punisher. Margarita Levieva, Michael Gandolfini, Genneya Walton, and Ayelet Zurer round out the cast.

Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito serve as executive producers for Marvel Studios with Chris Gary (Secret Invasion), Sana Amanat (Ms. Marvel), showrunner Dario Scardapane (Marvel’s The Punisher), and former showrunners Chris Ord and Matt Corman (Covert Affairs). Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, who directed episodes of Marvel Studios series Moon Knight and Loki season 2, are on board as directors.

Marvel’s Daredevil: Born Again will premiere in March 2025 on Disney+.

Due to two Hollywood strikes and a show restructuring, it took Daredevil: Born Again well over a year to film its first batch of episodes. Now, principal photography has come to a close as the show takes a break to get the scripts of its second group of episodes polished. The news was seemingly confirmed by Daredevil: Born Again stunt coordinator Philip Silvera. Friday, Silvera, confirmed the news in a snapshot shared to his Instagram Stories.

“That’s a wrap,” Silvera shared. “Congrats to our entire stunt team, cast, and crew. I can’t wait to see everyone’s hard work!”

Though it’s yet to be confirmed, it’s expected the production only filmed around nine episodes of the show’s ordered 18 episodes. Other reports over the weekend surfaced suggesting new Born Again showrunner Dario Scardapane would take much of 2024 to go through the scripts for the back half of the show before principal photography picks back up in November. It’s said contracts aren’t allowing Marvel Studios to call it Season One and Season Two, so it’s possible the show will simply be called Daredevil: Born Again – Part One and Daredevil: Born Again – Part Two as a way around the agreements.

“I can say that up until this point, we’ve been a little bit cagey about what’s Sacred Timeline, what’s not Sacred Timeline,” Marvel Studios executive Brad Winderbaum previously told ScreenRant of the show. “That was born of, frankly, a period at the studio where we were like, ‘We have to stick the landing with the vendors.’ It was another part of the company developing the Netflix stuff.”

“We were aware of what they were doing, they were aware of what we were doing, but there was a lot to balance anyway,” Winderbaum said. “But now that some time has passed; now that we see actually how well integrated the stories are, I think that I personally, Brad Winderbaum, would be confident in saying it is part of the Sacred Timeline.”

Daredevil: Born Again continues to add fresh talent to the mix. Today, Deadline reports that Lou Taylor Pucci has joined the Disney+ series. TV fans might know him from Physical over on Apple TV+. As of now, there is no work on who Pucci will be playing in Daredevil: Born Again. But, there are a number of characters who have not been announced yet. On the TV side of things, fans might know him from You, Shameless, American Horror Story and You’re the Worst. In movies, he’s been in Evil Dead (2013), The Informers and Fan Boys. There’s a lot of ground to cover there and because of so many varying roles, its hard to figure out how he would fit into Matt Murdock’s story.

The big pull for fans is the prospect of having Charlie Cox and Vincent D’onofrio back in the fold as Daredevil and Kingpin. Fans have been praying for some kind of revival for years and their prayers got answered by Marvel Studios. Even outside shot returns like Elden Henson and Deborah Ann Woll have been brought back for Daredevil: Born Again. There have been teases of further inclusions from the Netflix days. But, very little of that has been officially confirmed yet. For now, fans are just going to have to make do with the information available.

Jon Bernthal Is Back In The Fold

marvel-the-punisher-jon-bernthal.jpg

It’s been quite the week for fans of the Netflix show revival. Daredevil: Born Again is filming outside and that means wild set photos of everyone. Yes, even Jon Bernthal joining the fray as The Punisher. Collider recently grabbed a hold of the star to ask about his imminent entry into the MCU. Daredevil: Born Again might be the most-hyped Marvel project of next year. Bernthal and all the people involved know that the expectation are sky high. He’s ready for people to get to see Frank Castle again because he knows how much fans love him.

“I think there’s a reason why that character has resonated as deeply and strongly as he has,” Bernthal said. “In the hearts and minds of comic book fans and first responders and people in the military and people all over the globe. I think there’s a little bit of Frank Castle in everybody. He exists very strongly inside me and I care about that character deeply. I also know that it’s absolutely essential that if we do it, we do it right and we have real sacred integrity to the source material and to what is at the core of Frank. I’m gonna do my absolute best to make sure that, if and when we do it, we do it right.”

Getting Daredevil Into The MCU

daredevil-matt-foggy-karen.jpg

Fans were so pleased to see Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock show up in Spider-Man: No Way Home. However, there was not confirmation that the Netflix iterations of these characters were MCU canon until last year. Series star Vincent D’Onofrio laid out how Daredevil’s old show found its way into the Marvel Studios side of things with The Hollywood Reporter. During The Hollywood shutdown last year, the decision was made to have things hook up directly to the Netflix Defenderverse.

“During our restart of all the creative on Daredevil: Born Again, all the creatives got together and said, ‘Look, this is how we’ve got to do it now.’ So we are for sure only speaking about it in terms of being directly connected to the original Daredevil, and that’s a great thing,” D’Onofrio recalled. “It brings in a lot of cool stories and all the collateral story that happened in those original three seasons. So we now get to start this Born Again situation with all of that history behind us and the outcome of all that history. So we’re all talking about Daredevil: Born Again in those terms now.”

I also know that it’s absolutely essential that if we do it, we do it right and we have real sacred integrity to the source material and to what is at the core of Frank. I’m gonna do my absolute best to make sure that, if and when we do it, we do it right.”

Bernthal Has Been Waiting For This Moment For Years Now

NEW YORK, NY – APRIL 03: Jon Bernthal and Charlie Cox are seen on the set of “Daredevil Born Again” in Brooklyn on April 03, 2024 in New York City.

A few years ago, the idea of a Defenderverse revival felt like a pipe dream. Now, there’s real momentum at Marvel Studios to bring back multiple elements from those shows in the MCU. Daredevil: Born Again already helped reinforce both Vincent D’Onofrio and Charlie Cox as big parts of the Marvel universe moving forward. Now, The Punisher looks to be squarely in the fold too. Bernthal is incredibly touched by the outpouring of love for his work on the Netflix series.

“It’s unbelievably humbling how much people sort of responded to this version of Frank, and I can’t tell you how much it means to me because he means so much to me. He’s in my blood, he’s in my bones,” Bernthal said two years ago. “So it’s not about whether we do it, it’s about getting it right, and doing the version that the fans really deserve. We’ll see. I mean, all of those decisions are made in rooms I am not invited into… But Frank’s always there, he’s always a part of me. And when we get the call to go, I’ll be ready, and I’ll make sure that I do everything I can to make sure that we do it right, or we won’t do it at all.”

Daredevil: Born Again star Charlie Cox had some big praise for Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson this week. The Marvel actor credited his Foggy Nelson and Karen Page co-stars as the “heartbeat of our show.” During Washington D.C.’s AwesomeCon, Cox was asked about how the Disney+ show was going. While it’s clear to anyone who’s been on social media this year that they’ve been hustling on Daredevil: Born Again, the actor seems really glad to be reunited with his old friends. In previous versions of this series, there was some debate as to whether or not Foggy or Karen would be back in the fold. Now, with the two stars solidly in the picture, he feels like a lot of the fans do.

“Aw it’s so cool, man. So cool. Yeah, it was pretty heartbreaking when they weren’t around initially,” Cox said (h/t @ddcastarchive on Twitter). “When we came back to filming and they had made some changes, which you guys obviously probably read about and stuff, you know, it was clear that Foggy and Karen are kind of the heartbeat of our show. They always were.”

“So [it feels] really special to have them back. Huge shout out to Deborah and to Elden,” he added. “I know there’s been photos, there were some set photos that came out, so I know I can talk about it because it’s on the internet. But it was really sweet to have some scenes together again.”

Charlie Cox Thought Born Again Was Impossible

daredevil-born-again-charlie-cox-matt-murdock-foggy-karen.jpg

There must be something about these convention appearances that just bring a strong reaction out of Charlie Cox. He talked about how “delusional” the thought of a continuation was during Wales Comic Con last year. The Daredevil: Born Again star explained a conversation he had with Vincent D’Onofrio and how thrilled he is to be playing Matt Murdock again.

“I really thought that ship had sailed, you know? I thought it was over,” Cox said  during a panel at Wales Comic Con. “It had been a couple of years since [Daredevil was cancelled]. What I didn’t know was there was an embargo on that. So, there was an amount of time – I think it was probably two years – after the show was canceled before Disney and Marvel could approach us.”

Cox continued: “So, during that time, I didn’t know that. I just thought it was over. And Vincent, who plays Wilson Fisk, him and I would chat occasionally on the phone. And he would kind of say, ‘I’m sure they’re gonna bring us back.’ I’d be on the phone being, like, ‘Mate, the guy’s delusional! He’s got to let it go.'”

Daredevil: Born Again Feels New Too

Not too long ago, ComicBook.com‘s Adam Barnhardt sat down with Vincent D’Onofrio to talk about his role in Echo and the future with Daredevil: Born Again. While fans are obsessing over every single detail that links to a previous season of the Netflix series, the star was quick to point out that there are some new things to enjoy as well. Here’s some of what he had to say.

“I think it’s definitely a new show. It’s not the Netflix show. It’s definitely a new show,” D’Onofrio told ComicBook.com in a recent interview. “I mean, all I can say is that Charlie [Cox] and I are not bored. We are having a great time. We have a great cast, and I think everybody else is having a great time, too.

Daredevil star Rosario Dawson addressed her return in Daredevil: Born Again. On Twitter, a fan asked about getting involved with the Disney+ reboot. Dawson replied, “Of course #unfinishedbusiness.” So many familiar faces are back for Daredevil: Born Again. Of course Charlie Cox is there, but so many returning actors have been announced. Wilson Bethel, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Jon Bernthal and more are all in the fold for this new effort. However, there are still some faces like Dawson curiously missing from the picture. Ayelet Zuer isn’t back as Vanessa Fisk, so it isn’t a complete and utter re-tread. So, maybe it will happen if the Multiverse allows it.

“People keep asking me if I’m gonna be on Daredevil: Born Again, and I’m always like, ‘Well, [Disney] knows where I am,'” Dawson said in a previous THR interview before Ahsoka came out. “So, it’s been a pretty remarkable journey to be at this place now and just working at this scale.” Maybe there’s still some hope, but filming has already begun and its getting late fast.

Doing Right By The Original Show

daredevil-born-again-charlie-cox-matt-murdock-foggy-karen.jpg

Fans have gotten so many looks at Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio since they were introduced to the MCU. Daredevil: Born Again thrusts them into the spotlight in a major way. Echo‘s press tour saw D’Onofrio talk to ComicBook.com about how the new show carries from the Netflix era. While he couldn’t give us all the goodies, it’s clear that the creative team is thinking about these decisions and keeping a lot of this consistent. Check out what he had to say down below.

“I really can’t say much, as you know, but I will say that while I was shooting Echo, I realized it confirmed a lot for me,” D’Onofrio began. “Which was that even if people had never seen the original Daredevil, the tone of Echo and the writing of Echo allowed me to present the character to even a new audience, not just audiences that had seen Daredevil before. And the way that I think he’s best portrayed, I think in that tone, he’s best portrayed like that, and we’re going to continue that. You created something that was really, really beautiful. And so, they’re like your children.”

What’s Going On With The Defenders?

daredevil-the-defenders-disney.jpg

There has been a lot of chatter online about the DefenderVerse and how those characters factor into the MCU’s Sacred Timeline. Marvel executive Brad Winderbaum talked about bringing the Defenders to the MCU with ScreenRant. He argues that Daredevil and his allies are a part of the Marvel Studios picture now. And the conversation took off.

“I can say that up until this point, we’ve been a little bit cagey about what’s Sacred Timeline, what’s not Sacred Timeline,” Winderbaum explained. “That was born of, frankly, a period at the studio where we were like, ‘We have to stick the landing with the vendors.’ It was another part of the company developing the Netflix stuff. We were aware of what they were doing, they were aware of what we were doing, but there was a lot to balance anyway.”

He did mention, “But now that some time has passed; now that we see actually how well integrated the stories are, I think that I personally, Brad Winderbaum, would be confident in saying [Daredevil] is part of the Sacred Timeline.”

There’s been another update to the Marvel Cinematic Universe Timeline. When it first launched, a big selling point for the MCU was the slogan, “It’s All Connected.” This meant that events and characters from one project would appear in another, such as Agent Phil Coulson popping up in Iron Man, Thor, and The Avengers, before headlining the first MCU television show, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. While Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s connection to the larger MCU is hotly debated, more official Marvel series’ like Hawkeye and WandaVision started debuting on Disney+, along with the DefendersVerse. While it was never clear where these Disney+ shows took place in the MCU timeline, Marvel Studios has cleared that up for any confused fans.

The “MCU Complete Timeline” made its way onto social media this week, with a new graphic detailing each movie, television show, and short produced by Marvel Studios. What makes this infographic all the more appealing is that each season of a TV show is slotted into the timeline. For example, the first seasons of Daredevil and Jessica Jones fall between Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Avengers: Age of Ultron, as well as Seasons 1 and 2 of I Am Groot. Even Echo, the newest entry in the MCU, can be found right between Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. So for any Marvel fans who like to watch their projects in chronological order, they now have a complete guide to show them the way.

The Marvels is now streaming on Disney+

The Marvels has made its long-awaited streaming debut on Disney+The sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel is a team-up affair, with Brie Larson‘s Carol Danvers joining forces with Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau, and Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel. Teyonah Parris made her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as Monica Rambeau in WandaVision, the first Marvel Studios production for Disney+. Iman Vellani starred as Kamala Khan in Ms. Marvel, another Disney+ show, which ended with a post-credits scene teasing her The Marvels inclusion. After Ms. Marvel ended its box office run as the lowest-grossing MCU movie, it now heads to Disney+ to find a new audience.

In November, Disney CEO Bob Iger blamed The Marvels bombing at the box office on a lack of executive oversight and the restrictions of making a movie during a pandemic. “The Marvels was shot during COVID,” Iger said during a panel at The New York Times‘ DealBook Summit. “There wasn’t as much supervision on the set, so to speak, where we have executives [that are] really looking over what’s being done day after day after day.”

Marvel fans are a little worried about a major Daredevil character because of a new set video. While a lot of the Internet is getting a peek at Daredevil and Bullseye’s costumes in Daredevil: Born Again, there is drama afoot. In the new video, Bullseye is walking toward a character with his pistol after firing off a few rounds. Judging from the way that Matt Murdock runs at him and goes for a tackle, this could spell bad news for whoever’s on the business end of that firearm. There have been whispers that Karen Page and Foggy Nelson are in danger during Daredevil: Born Again. Various fan detectives believe they’ve found even more conclusive evidence.

For fans wondering if the Disney+ series would be taking after the previous show, there are more and more nuggets popping up by the day. One of the biggest requests heading into Daredevil: Born Again has been the return of Foggy Nelson and Karen Page. Well, when Deborah Ann-Woll and Elden Henson were photographed on-set last month, the entire Marvel fanbase was cheering. Now, that doesn’t ensure that things will remain this upbeat among observers. (There are already rumors that the fan-favorite trio’s reunion might be short-lived…) But, for now, there’s so much to pour over.

Is Daredevil: Born Again A Continuation?

From the moment Charlie Cox returned to the MCU in Daredevil: Born Again, questions about his status have swirled online. Echo brought even more questions as Vincent D’Onofrio returned as Kingpin after Hawkeye. ComicBook.com asked the Wilson Fisk actor about the upcoming Marvel series. While he couldn’t gave any of the notes and bolts away, he did say that the vision for Daredevil’s next show will become a lot clearer in the coming months.

“I really can’t say much, as you know, but I will say that while I was shooting Echo, I realized it confirmed a lot for me,” the actor told us. “Which was that even if people had never seen the original Daredevil, the tone of Echo and the writing of Echo allowed me to present the character to even a new audience, not just audiences that had seen Daredevil before. The Defenders Are Marvel Canon

daredevil-born-again-charlie-cox-matt-murdock-foggy-karen.jpg

Adding the DefenderVerse to the MCU’s Sacred Timeline has caused a stir among Marvel obsessives. While the large majority of fans loved a decision, there are some that are still skeptical of Daredevil’s place in the larger canon. ScreenRant spoke to Marvel executive Brad Winderbaum about where The Defenders shows fit into the Marvel picture.

“I can say that up until this point, we’ve been a little bit cagey about what’s Sacred Timeline, what’s not Sacred Timeline,” Winderbaum said. “That was born of, frankly, a period at the studio where we were like, ‘We have to stick the landing with the vendors.’ It was another part of the company developing the Netflix stuff. We were aware of what they were doing, they were aware of what we were doing, but there was a lot to balance anyway.”

He would continue “But now that some time has passed; now that we see actually how well integrated the stories are, I think that I personally, Brad Winderbaum, would be confident in saying [Daredevil] is part of the Sacred Timeline.”

What is Daredevil: Born Again?

Daredevil: Born Again will see Daredevil facing off with the Kingpin once more. Vincent D’Onofrio, who plays the Kingpin, Wilson Fisk, recently spoke to ComicBook.com about how Daredevil: Born Again differs from the Netflix series.

“I think it’s definitely a new show. It’s not the Netflix show. It’s definitely a new show,” D’Onofrio said. “I mean, all I can say is that Charlie [Cox] and I are not bored. I’m trying to skirt around specifics, but I can only say that it is a different show and it feels like a different show.”

However, D’Onofrio’s statements came before news surfaced of Daredevil: Born Again, which may have brought it back in line with the vision of the Netflix series. Fans will find out when Daredevil: Born Again eventually debuts on Disney+. In the meantime, Marvel’s Daredevil is streaming now on Disney+ and was recently inserted into its proper place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline.

After creative reshuffling behind the scenes and the canonization of the DefendersVerse, it looks like Marvel Studios is doing whatever it can to tie its upcoming Daredevil release in line with the show that came before it. Naturally, that means like returning to staples from the character’s time on Netflix. In short, Josie’s is making a comeback. The Hell’s Kitchen bar served as the favorite watering hole for Matt Murdock, Foggy Nelson, and Karen Page not only in the Marvel comics source material, but all three seasons of Daredevil, and it will be making its way back for Daredevil: Born Again.

In photos recently captured of the Daredevil: Born Again set, those in the show’s art department can be seen getting a storefront transformed into Josie’s. Set photos continue to surface of the show’s production given its tendency to film on practical outdoor sets in New York City.

In a previous chat with THR, Daredevil: Born Again star Vincent D’Onofrio revealed the creatives behind the show got together during last year’s pause in production to reassess where the show needed to go. It was at that time Marvel Studios executives decided to officially add The DefendersVerse to the MCU’s Sacred Timeline.

Daredevil: Born Again is effectively serving as a fourth season to the Daredevil series that originally debuted on Netflix. Not only are Charlie Cox (Matt Murdock) and Vincent D’Onofrio (Kingpin) back, but Marvel Studios executive Brad Winderbaum has confirmed the shows in the DefendersVerse are, in fact, part of Marvel Studios’ Sacred Timeline. Believe it or not, that’s only the tip of the iceberg. Since then, it’s been confirmed Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson are returning as Karen Page and Foggy Nelson, and Wilson Bethel will also appear in a handful of episodes as Bullseye

With returns found aplenty, there’s still one major question mark: is Elodie Yung going to be returning as Elektra? According to Yung herself, she’s not quite sure. In a recent Instagram post, a fan asked Yung where Elektra went after The Defenders. Yung replied with a simple answer, “Ask them!”

elodie-yung-instagram.png

If Marvel Studios ever decides to bring Elektra back, Yung is ready to leap back into action as the actor has said she’d “love to” return to the role, one that’s since become a hit with fans around the world.

“Oh my God, I would love to. Especially since they’ve adjusted my costume,” Yung said about a return during a Fandom Spotlite virtual Wizard World panel in 2020. “I would love to. Let me tell you, I love this character because she’s so complex and broken.”

“She’s got a lot of villain in her, and that I can relate to, and also a lot of good. It’s such an amazing character,” she continued. “I would love for Marvel to bring her back.”

Given The Defenders series is now part of the Sacred Timeline, Elektra is technically somewhere at the bottom of a collapsed skyscraper at Midland Circle. Fortunately for fans hoping to see her again, Matt Murdock was also in the same predicament and managed to escape to appear in Daredevil Season Three.

Daredevil: Born Again‘s latest set photos have reunited Matt Murdock, Karen Page and Foggy Nelson. The Daredevil reboot is back in production and there’s been some serious retooling of the plot for the Disney+ series. Fans rejoiced when word of Elden Henson and Deborah Ann Woll returning for Daredevil: Born Again broke. But, those have been far from the only familiar faces confirmed to make appearances in this MCU show. However, for a lot of Daredevil fans out there, these are the most impactful returns besides Vincent D’Onofrio and Charlie Cox. After all, it wouldn’t feel exactly like the Netflix series without Karen and Foggy in-tow.

Elsewhere on social media, observers also cheered their approval when an image of the “Nelson, Murdock & Page” sign made its way onto Twitter. It really feels like Daredevil: Born Again is getting the band back together. The only thing really missing from this project is the original actress for Vanessa, Ayelet Zurer. With all the other returns that have made their way into reports, her absence feels like a weird spot. Although nothing is completely done yet, so Marvel may have something planned. Check out the return of this trio down below courtesy of @OT_Tristan as Twitter pours over every image available.

How Much Of The DefendersVerse Is Canon?

defenders-tv.jpg

All of this Daredevil talk has brought up questions about the canon status of the Netflix show and the Defenders characters on a larger level. Over at ScreenRant, they asked Echo producer Brad Winderbaum about it. Well, the Marvel creative team member said that those shows were on the Sacred Timeline. And, Disney+ has them all listed there. So, that seems pretty definitive for the time being.

“I can say that up until this point, we’ve been a little bit cagey about what’s Sacred Timeline, what’s not Sacred Timeline,” Winderbaum admitted. “That was born of, frankly, a period at the studio where we were like, ‘We have to stick the landing with the vendors.’ It was another part of the company developing the Netflix stuff. We were aware of what they were doing, they were aware of what we were doing, but there was a lot to balance anyway.”

He added, “But now that some time has passed; now that we see actually how well integrated the stories are, I think that I personally, Brad Winderbaum, would be confident in saying [Daredevil] is part of the Sacred Timeline.”

Will Born Again Be Just Like The Netflix Show?

daredevil-born-again-charlie-cox-vincent-donofrio.jpg

So, now the only questions is: How close will Daredevil: Born Again be tonally to the Netflix series that preceded it? ComicBook.com had the chance to speak to Vincent D’Onofrio about this very question before Echo hit Disney+. He seems to think that things will be very similar. He’s under strict orders not to give anything away. But, these new images and reports of rewrites and reshoots seem to indicate we’re headed for a remarkably similar experience.

“I really can’t say much, as you know, but I will say that while I was shooting Echo, I realized it confirmed a lot for me,” the actor explained. “Which was that even if people had never seen the original Daredevil, the tone of Echo and the writing of Echo allowed me to present the character to even a new audience, not just audiences that had seen Daredevil before. And the way that I think he’s best portrayed, I think in that tone, he’s best portrayed like that, and we’re going to continue that.”

Echo is now available to stream on Disney+ and Hulu, and the new series has some big ties to both Marvel Studios’ Hawkeye and Netflix’s Daredevil. Hawkeye concluded with Maya Lopez/Echo (Alaqua Cox) shooting her “uncle” Wilson Fisk/Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio), and the new series began with her on the run. The first episode of Echo also featured an epic showdown between Maya and Daredevil (Charlie Cox). ComicBook.com recently had the chance to chat with Echo composer, Dave Porter, who admitted he wasn’t much of a Marvel guy before signing on to do the music. During the interview, Porter explained why he didn’t go back and watch Daredevil or Hawkeye

“I didn’t actually,” Porter shared when we asked if he’d watched the other Marvel shows. “And on purpose, I think that they were looking for a fresh… I think they hired me, I think in part for a fresh look at this stuff and to be the new guy in the room. And I was very happy to learn about stuff when it was important that I know things that they were sure to tell me, but I don’t think I needed to. So actually, the only thing I watched was Echo’s introduction.”

“But no, I didn’t spend a lot of time going back into the resource,” he added. “And I think that the goal here was really to have Echo stand on her own. And I know she’s not a big character. She’s not a character that a lot of particularly Marvel folks know a lot about, so it was a chance to start fresh.”

You can watch our interview with Porter at the top of the page.

What’s Next For Maya Lopez?

According to a recent report from The Hollywood ReporterMarvel wants to do more with Maya and is currently “developing new ideas as it seeks to build out its street-level heroes.” It’s unclear when we will be seeing Maya again, but Alaqua Cox has ideas for her character’s future. She previously said she would like to share the screen with Spider-Man, and she recently told Deadline that she wants to join the Avengers.

“I hope that she doesn’t go back to New York City,” Cox explained. “I really hope not, personally, because it’s just a horrible place for her to be [with] all those traumatic memories she has growing up, now that she’s able to reconnect and open up more with her blood-related family, and she realized that they never left her side. She was gone for so many years. She ignored so many texts and phone calls and letters but the second she got back to Oklahoma, they wanted her right back. They were not resistant at all. It makes her realize ‘Wow, my family has always been there for me.’ I want Maya to reconnect with her family and get rid of New York and what happened in in New York and Kingpin, but we’ll see what happens.”

Cox added, “Honestly, I wouldn’t mind if Maya joined the Avengers. I think it would be so amazing to cross paths with other superheroes. I would love that. I think would be very fun. I think be great to work with Mark Ruffalo, the Hulk. I love him as an actor and a person, because Mark is a huge advocate for Indigenous women. And he’s from Wisconsin, and I’m from Wisconsin. So we have that in common. But Mark is just an amazing advocate for women, and I think it’d be amazing to work with him. I think that we would have a lot of things to talk about. I can just imagine those conversations already.”

Echo is now streaming on Disney+ and Hulu and will leave Hulu on April 9th.

The first season of Daredevil was first released on Netflix on April 10, 2015. At the time, the streamer debuted the first 13 episodes of the show, effectively launching its own little corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The series would go on to anchor the streamer’s “DefendersVerse,” eventually helping establish shows like Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and The Punisher. Now, Marvel Studios has a prime opportunity to do one of the coolest things involving the character.

Should the stars align right, the Kevin Feige-led outfit could choose to release Daredevil: Born Again on April 10, 2025, 10 years to the day the series first debuted on Netflix. Now that the show has restarted production, it’s likely principal photography will wrap at some point this summer, if not before. Should that be the case, there’s more than enough time to get the series polished and ready before next April.

Given how symbolic it is to name the series Born Again, setting the release date on April 10, 2025 could add tremendous depth to a marketing campaign that’s sure to feature the first three Daredevil seasons a plenty.

What Is Daredevil: Born Again About?

Daredevil: Born Again will follow the latest battle between Matt Murdock / Daredevil (Charlie Cox) and Wilson Fisk / Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio). New cast members for the series will include Sandrine Holt, Michael Gandolfini, and Margarita Levieva. Jon Bernthal will also return in his previous role of Frank Castle / The Punisher.

One of the many Hollywood productions impacted by last year’s labor strike, Daredevil: Born Again was in the middle of filming its first season when work stoppages forced principal photography to draw to a close. Now, the series is getting ready to resume filming as Vincent D’Onofrio tells us he’s just days away from picking work back up on the project.

We spoke to D’Onofrio and Echo creator David Mack in support of our latest edition of Creators on Creators, with the video of that full conversation coming soon.

“We’re days away from restarting Daredevil, so that’s that’s we’re about to plunge into a lot of work,” the Daredevil star tells us. He also says the series will film entirely in New York whether it’s on practical sets or on a sound stage. “We’re shooting in New York, in in the studio and on locations here. Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Chelsea. Stuff like that.”

The actor has nothing but great things to say of the show’s recent creative overhaul, who saw a new showrunner take the reins to the show. Moon Knight directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead are also directing all new episodes of the show.

“We’re pretty excited. These scripts are great. We’ve got two great directors,” D’Onofrio adds. “Charlie [Cox] and I, we talk. We speak every day, and are working on stuff every day. I feel like I am excited, like when you’re about to start a new job that you know is going to be tons of work. You know, so you’re like, super excited, and like, ‘Oh here we go. Here we go.'”

Stay tuned to ComicBook.com for the latest information on Daredevil: Born Again! The first three seasons of both Daredevil, as well as The Defenders limited series, can now be seen on Disney+. If you haven’t signed up for Disney+ yet, you can do that right here

Daredevil and Kingpin have a bright future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and that future involves taking the characters back to the basics of their previous Netflix iterations. When the rights to the Defenders characters went back to Marvel Studios, and the company announced the returns of Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio in their fan-favorite roles, it was with the caveat that their journey in the MCU would be following a different story than the one we watched unfold in the Defenders-verse. Recently, all of that changed.

The upcoming Daredevil: Born Again TV series underwent a creative overhaul, which has it refocusing to be more like what was featured on the Netflix Marvel shows. That also means that much of what happened in those shows is carrying over to the MCU canon. Echo confirmed as much when it addressed Kingpin murdering his father with a hammer.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, D’Onofrio opened up about the changes coming to Daredevil: Born Again, and how the new direction is honoring the canon established in the original Daredevil series.

Ahead of Echo‘s premiere, D’Onofrio talked with ComicBook.com about the tone of Daredevil: Born Again, and how that tone is established in the newest Marvel series.

“I really can’t say much, as you know, but I will say that while I was shooting Echo, I realized it confirmed a lot for me. Which was that even if people had never seen the original Daredevil, the tone of Echo and the writing of Echo allowed me to present the character to even a new audience, not just audiences that had seen Daredevil before. And the way that I think he’s best portrayed, I think in that tone, he’s best portrayed like that, and we’re going to continue that.”

Starring Alaqua Cox, all five episodes of Echo debuted exclusively on both Disney+ and Hulu on Tuesday, January 9th. The origin story of Echo revisits Maya Lopez, whose ruthless behavior in New York City catches up with her in her hometown. She must face her past, reconnect with her Native American roots and embrace the meaning of family and community if she ever hopes to move forward. Vincent D’Onofrio will reprise his role as Wilson Fisk / Kingpin, and Charlie Cox will reprise his role as Matt Murdock / Daredevil. Echo will also star Chaske Spencer, Tantoo Cardinal, Devery Jacobs, Cody Lightning, Graham Greene and Zahn McClarnon.

Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Brad Winderbaum, Stephen Broussard, Richie Palmer, Marion Dayre, and Jason Gavin (Blackfeet) are executive producers of Echo. Amy Rardin, Sydney Freeland, Christina King (Seminole), and Jennifer Booth are co-executive producers.

As promised in the weeks leading up to Echo, the series eventually directly references the events of Netflix’s Daredevil series. Though it stops short of using archival footage or anything of that nature, Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio) does happen to reference one of his actions in the critically acclaimed series. Light spoilers up ahead for Echo! Proceed with caution if you haven’t seen all five episodes of the Marvel Studios show.

In the closing moments of Echo Episode Four, the eponymous vigilante (Alaqua Cox) approached Kingpin in his suite at a local hotel. After a tense standoff, Kingpin reveals he’s kept the hammer he murdered his father with. The first season of Daredevil shows the the murder of Bill Fisk in gruesome detail, with Wilson grabbing a hammer off a nearby table at home to bludgeon his father wife after he beat his wife, Wilson’s mother Marlene.

Interestingly enough—and this may err on the side of conspiracy—but the hammer Kingpin displays in Echo is a ball-peen hammer, while the one he murders his father with on-screen in Daredevil Season One is a more traditional claw hammer. Take that however you see fit.

“I dunno if I can say this, but I love the Netflix Daredevil, it’s great,” Echo helmer Sydney Freeland shared at a press event last month. “And so we certainly took, obviously the Daredevil fight, it was a little bit of a nod to that series … But then also we wanted very adamantly to show that these are people in our show. They bleed, they die, they get killed, and there are real-world consequences. And again, talking, it’s not the fate of the universe at stake because I think once you go that broad, you can sort of lose sight a little bit. And so that kind of dictated the tone a little bit. So I guess to answer your question, it was a conversation, but it wasn’t that reason.”

After years of speculation, The Defenders and its associated shows are a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe continuity. After comments from Marvel Studios executives earlier this year, Disney+ has added each of the shows from Netflix’s Marvel deal to the MCU’s “Timeline Order” section on the streamer.

Any show from Daredevil to The Punisher and even Iron Fist are included in the listing, confirming the show’s canonicity with the remainder of the Marvel Studios franchise.

The topic of continuity came up once again during the press tour for Echo. Given both Daredevil and Kingpin are involved in the series, Marvel Studios executive Brad Winderbaum made it a point to say he felt the shows that once aired on Netflix were now canon with the other happenings of the MCU.

“I can say that up until this point, we’ve been a little bit cagey about what’s Sacred Timeline, what’s not Sacred Timeline,” Winderbaum said. “That was born of, frankly, a period at the studio where we were like, ‘We have to stick the landing with the vendors.’ It was another part of the company developing the Netflix stuff.”

Given the comic book histories of Echo and Daredevil are closely entwined, it only makes sense Matt Murdock appears in Marvel’s Echo live-action series. The Man Without Fear’s appearance was confirmed in the show’s initial trailer, and the show itself wastes little time bringing the fan-favorite character back to the masses. Light spoilers up ahead for Echo! Proceed with caution if you want to go into the series spoiler-free.

Daredevil (Charlie Cox) appears in the first episode of Echo during one of the show’s many flashbacks. In fact, Ol’ Hornhead appears sometime immediately following the death of Echo’s (Alaqua Cox) father by the hand of Jeremy Renner’s Ronin. Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio) encourages her to use that rage for his criminal empire, sending her on a mission where’s she’s supposed to kill a series of the villain’s opposing gangsters.

It’s here Daredevil crashes onto the scene, telling Lopez it’s a group he’s been watching over for a while. As seen in the trailer, gone are the days of the yellow suit he donned in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and instead, the character is seen wearing a scarlet and black suit similar to the one seen in the character’s acclaimed Netflix series.

At the red carpet premiere for the series Monday night, Marvel Studios executive Brad Winderbaum said the cameo was one of the best the outfit has ever filmed.

“The Daredevil scene is one of the best cameos we’ve done in a Marvel show or movie,” Winderbaum said. “It’s not just thrown in there. It’s fundamental to her journey as a character. Her fight with Daredevil represents a huge triumph for Maya Lopez that finally catches the eye of Kingpin and contextualizes her in a certain way in his criminal empire. So it’s important and it’s incredible.”

Marvel’s Echo drops tonight and Marvel Studios is teasing Vincent D’Onofrio’s role in the series. In a brand new teaser uploaded to social media, Kingpin looks to ignite a standoff between him and Maya. Fans of Netflix’s Daredevil series have a lot to look forward to with the upcoming Disney+ show. Charlie Cox is doing flips in most of the promotional material for Echo. D’Onofrio brings that simmering rage that Netflix viewers know all too well to this new show. One of the biggest departures for Echo is being released on both Hulu and the Disney streaming platform tonight at 6pm Pacifc. So, the world will get to see the street-level drama in all its glory.

Alaqua Cox’s big MCU return is a moment that a lot of fans have been waiting for. The expectation is that Echo will lead right into Daredevil: Born Again. However, the press has only seen the first three episodes of the series. So, the expectation is building online as people crowd around to see what the mature take on the Marvel Studios universe looks like. This is the first project released under the Marvel Spotlight banner.

Shows with this branding have less connection to the overall MCU. A lot of observers complained about “too much homework” being necessary to understand some of the recent Marvel releases. Echo goes out of its way to both get newcomers up to speed. But, also to keep things focused on the title character rather than some overriding plot line. Check out the teaser below!

Daredevil fans have been salivating at the prospect of Vincent D’Onofrio reprising his role as Wilson Fisk for a while. During the press tour for Echo, Comicbook.com spoke to the Kingpin actor about his role in the series. Over the course of our conversation, he describe the relationship between his character and Maya. There’s a lot of history there, and it’s all about to come roaring back at the most inopportune time.

“Yeah, it’s a little rocky,” D’Onofrio said with a smile when asked about Kingpin and Maya’s relationship. “Yeah, things happen. Things are said,” he added with a laugh. “It’s a very intense relationship, this kind of father-daughter relationship, and her wanting to move on and her getting closer to her family, and then she gets more connected to her native ancestral history. Yeah, Fisk is not happy about it.”

“I actually think it’s the most interesting way to do this character, to present this character,” D’Onofrio said when asked about Fisk and his initial bond with Maya. “Because he can be such a monster. But I think if we always depict him as having an intense emotional life as well, just like people do in real life, I think that always makes the character more interesting. The fact that he can turn on a dime if he needs to. And I think that makes him more dangerous and more scary.”

The DefendersVerse, by all accounts, officially finds itself part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe canon. Though Marvel Studios has introduced characters like Daredevil (Charlie Cox) and Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio) to the MCU through properties like Spider-Man: No Way Home and Hawkeye, fans still debated whether Netflix’s Daredevil and The Defenders were part of the studio’s Sacred Timeline, or the one realm where all Marvel Studios projects reside. Now, Marvel Studios executive Brad Winderbaum says the production house considers Daredevil and its extensions, by default, as part of the Sacred Timeline.

“We were aware of what they were doing, they were aware of what we were doing, but there was a lot to balance anyway,” Winderbaum told ScreenRant earlier this month. “But now that some time has passed; now that we see actually how well integrated the stories are, I think that I personally, Brad Winderbaum, would be confident in saying it is part of the Sacred Timeline.”

Now, Marvel Studios has found itself a surplus of villains that are some of the most complex, best-constructed characters comic book cinema has ever seen. There’s Luke Cage‘s Cottonmouth, played by Mahershala Ali, and Mariah Dillard (Alfre Woodard). Then there’s David Tennant’s Kilgrave from Jessica Jones and naturally, Kingpin, The Punisher (Jon Bernthal), and Bullseye (Wilson Bethel) from the three seasons of Daredevil.

Given the shows were each 13 episodes in length, writers were able to put the utmost care into each and every one of them and craft characters with tremendous depth and complexity. Though some of the characters were killed off in their respective shows, there are plenty of ways to bring them back—it is, after all, comic book cinema. No matter what the case, given Echo is the official beginning of a larger street-level output from Marvel Studios, there now have a treasure trove of characters to bring back.

A host of questions surround the Marvel Cinematic Universe at the moment, and 2023 was a rollercoaster of a year for the MCU in general. The first step in Marvel’s next chapter is the Disney+ series Echo, which also features Kingpin and Daredevil, who happen to be two of the main characters from Netflix’s previous Marvel TV universe. In a new interview with Screen Rant, MCU executive producer Brad Winderbaum was asked how Charlie Cox’s original Daredevil might factor into Echo as far as being canon. While early on there was some distance between the MCU and those Netflix shows, Winderbaum says these days he sees the original Daredevil series as 100% part of the MCU timeline.

It makes all the sense in the world, as both Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio have reprised their roles on several occasions now, and at this point, fans only see them in both of those roles. Marvel has remained vague on certain aspects of their characters as far as timelines, but both are fundamentally the same characters they were back when Netflix’s Marvel universe was first starting out.

Now both will have a role to play in Echo, but they are also returning for the highly anticipated Daredevil: Born Again. The show is currently undergoing somewhat of a creative overhaul, but the foundations seem to be staying the same. During a convention appearance at Salt Lake City FanX, D’Onofrio teased what fans can expect from the series when it eventually debuts.

“You guys have no idea what you’re in store for with [Daredevil: Born Again],” D’Onofrio said. “I know a little bit more than you guys and all I can say is, during that next series, you’re not going to be thinking about anything but the next episode. I promise.”

“I’m trying to stick to the rules, so I will only say that Charlie and I are going to be given the chance to dig deeper than ever before with our characters,” D’Onofrio said.

After a triumphant return in Hawkeye back in 2021, Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin is preparing for another outing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe later this month. The beloved villain is the main antagonist in the upcoming Echo series, which is said to be grounded and gritty, much like the previous Daredevil series. Not only that, but Echo will help lay the groundwork for Daredevil: Born Again, which will also heavily feature Kingpin.

Fans loved the dark and terrifying depiction of Kingpin in the original Daredevil series, which wasn’t part of the actual MCU. Echo and Daredevil: Born Again are part of the franchise, but it appears we will be getting a similar version of Kingpin. Speaking to ComicBook.com ahead of Echo‘s premiere, Vincent D’Onofrio opened up about this iteration of the character going into the rebooted Daredevil saga.

Kingpin’s MCU Future

According to Marvel producer Richie Palmer, this Kingpin has the potential to be one of the scarier, longer-lasting villains in the whole MCU.

“He’s scary. He’s violent. And, like Maya, he can do so much with just the look on his face and he is so intimidating and that’s awesome,” Palmer told us in a recent interview. “But also what I think is great about him being in this show is we got to see a different side of him in terms of his emotionality. And where he is after being humbled by Maya at the end of Hawkeye. I think he’s a little bit of a changed man when we meet him here. I think it’s exciting to see such a larger than life character like Kingpin go through those changes.”

When asked about the potential of Kingpin being a major recurring villain in the MCU, Palmer sounded optimistic about the idea, though he didn’t share any specific plans.

“I want to see that,” he said. “I think stay tuned to how this show ends and where we see him next. As a Kingpin fan myself, that sounds awesome and I know Vincent would love it.”

Echo is heading to Disney+ and Hulu next week, marking the first Marvel Studios project of the year and the first MCU series to get a binge release. The show is taking the same release route as some of Netflix’s Marvel shows, which isn’t too surprising considering who is set to appear in the series. In addition to Maya Lopez/Echo (Alaqua Cox), the villain first introduced in Hawkeye, the show will feature the return of Wilson Fisk/Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio) and Matt Murdock/Daredevil (Charlie Cox) from Daredevil. In fact, a new Echo teaser features footage of Kingpin and Daredevil from the Netflix series.

You can check out the newest teaser for Echo, which debuts on January 9th, in the post below:

Marvel Producer Confirms Daredevil Is Canon:

Marvel Studio’s Brad Winderbaum recently spoke with Screen Rant and confirmed Daredevil is part of the MCU’s “Sacred Timeline.”

“I can say that up until this point, we’ve been a little bit cagey about what’s Sacred Timeline, what’s not Sacred Timeline. That was born of, frankly, a period at the studio where we were like, ‘We have to stick the landing with the vendors.’ It was another part of the company developing the Netflix stuff. “But now that some time has passed; now that we see actually how well integrated the stories are, I think that I personally, Brad Winderbaum, would be confident in saying [Daredevil] is part of the Sacred Timeline.”

Echo Director Teases Daredevil Fight:

During a trailer event for EchoEcho‘s director and executive producer Sydney Freeland teased a showdown with Daredevil.

“I dunno if I can say this, but I love the Netflix Daredevil, it’s great,” Freeland shared when asked if the intent of Echo was to follow the Defenderverse.

Echo is being released on Disney+ and Hulu on January 9th. The show will leave Hulu on April 9th.

The Kingpin looks to have a bright future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After stealing scene after scene in Netflix’s Daredevil series, Vincent D’Onofrio was one of the only actors from that gritty Marvel franchise to be asked to reprise his role in the MCU. He returned as Kingpin in the Hawkeye series on Disney+, and is set to play the antagonist in Echo, which launches on Disney+ and Hulu this month. Given the love for his character amongst fans, and the fact that he’s in multiple MCU projects on the horizon, it’s easy to think Kingpin is being set up for a huge role in the Marvel Studios franchise going forward.

Ahead of Echo‘s debut this month, ComicBook.com spoke with producer Richie Palmer about D’Onofrio’s performance as Kingpin and what he brings to the table for Echo and the greater MCU.

“He’s scary. He’s violent. And, like Maya, he can do so much with just the look on his face and he is so intimidating and that’s awesome,” Palmer told us. “But also what I think is great about him being in this show is we got to see a different side of him in terms of his emotionality. “I want to see that,” he said. “I think stay tuned to how this show ends and where we see him next. As a Kingpin fan myself, that sounds awesome and I know Vincent would love it.”

D’Onofrio’s Kingpin will be a major character in Echo, continuing the story he began with Alaqua Cox’s Maya Lopez in Hawkeye. Charlie Cox will be appearing in the series as Daredevil. Both are set to star in the Marvel Studios series Daredevil: Born Again, which is currently in the works.

Starring Alaqua Cox, all five episodes of Echo will debut exclusively on both Disney+ and Hulu on Tuesday, January 9th. The origin story of Echo revisits Maya Lopez, whose ruthless behavior in New York City catches up with her in her hometown. She must face her past, reconnect with her Native American roots and embrace the meaning of family and community if she ever hopes to move forward. Call it blind faith: Vincent D’Onofrio believed Marvel’s Daredevil could return after being cancelled at Netflix after three seasons. Charlie Cox called that belief “delusional.” That’s because the Matt Murdock actor was unaware of a contract clause that prevented the characters from the Defenders series — including Daredevil, Luke Cage (Mike Colter), Iron Fist (Finn Jones), and Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) — from appearing in a non-Netflix series or movie for at least two years post-cancellation. For Daredevil, that meant icing Cox and D’Onofrio’s characters until at least November 2020. (D’Onofrio reprised his role as Kingpin in the 2021 Disney+ series Hawkeye, while Cox made a cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home that same year before returning in Disney+’s She-Hulk.)

“I really thought that ship had sailed, you know? I thought it was over,” Cox said during a panel at Wales Comic Con. “It had been a couple ofyears since [Daredevil was cancelled]. What I didn’t knowwas there was an embargo on that. So, there was an amount of time – Ithink it was probably two years – after the show was canceled before Disney and Marvel could approach us.”

Cox continued: “So, during that time, I didn’t know that. I just thought it was over. And Vincent, who plays Wilson Fisk, him and I would chatoccasionally on the phone. And he would kind of say, ‘I’m sure they’regonna bring us back.’ I’d be on the phone being, like, ‘Mate, the guy’sdelusional! He’s got to let it go.'”

The cancelled Marvel Television shows — Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher, and The Defenders left Netflix for Disney+ in 2022. Cox and D’Onofrio will return in Marvel Studios’ first TV-MA series, Echo, before reuniting in the Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again. Jon Bernthal, who joined the MCU as Frank Castle in season 2 of Daredevil, is also set to reprise his role as The Punisher.

Loki season 2 directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead are developing the reworked project after it underwent a creative overhaul post-writers’ strike. While Born Again is more sequel than reboot, D’Onofrio has clarified that the Disney+ series is not Daredevil season 4 or a continuation of the Netflix series from the now-defunct Marvel Television.

“I think it’s definitely a new show. It’s not the Netflix show. It’sdefinitely a new show,” D’Onofrio told ComicBook before the overhaul. “I mean, all I can say isthat Charlie and I are not bored. We are having a great time. Wehave a great cast, and I think everybody else is having a great timetoo. Charlie’s one of my favorite people, and I know that he comes [to set]every day ready to knock it out of the park and you know how I am, I’mtotally into this part, so I’m there for the same reason.”

Daredevil: Born Again does not yet have a release date on Disney+.

Echo is heading to Disney+ and Hulu in January, and the new Marvel Studios series will feature some familiar faces. The show follows Maya Lopez/Echo (Alaqua Cox) as she “struggles to reconnect with her Native American roots while balancing aspirations tied to a life of crime as successor to the brutal legacy of Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) AKA Kingpin.” Maya was first introduced in Hawkeye, and D’Onofrio is best known for Daredevil. It was previously confirmed that Echo will feature the MCU’s next appearance by Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil. Despite Echo, Daredevil, and Kingpin all appearing in previous Marvel shows, Echo‘s director and executive producer Sydney Freeland says you don’t need to watch anything else to understand the events of the upcoming series.

“Yeah, our hope is that you don’t need to have seen any other Marvel show before because – so obviously we have to establish ourselves in the MCU – but then we quickly make our own path,” Freeland shared at an Echo press event attended by ComicBook.com. “So it is tough because I’ve seen so much of the market content, I’m so familiar with Hawkeye. It was something we’re very conscious of, I’ll say that much. But the goal is that, hopefully, you don’t have to have seen anything coming into this.”

What Is Echo Rated?

It sounds like Echo will have more in common with the Defenderverse than Marvel’s Disney+ shows. Not only is Echo going to be released all at once, but it will be Marvel’s first Disney+ series that will be released simultaneously on Hulu. Echo will also be Marvel’s first Disney+ series to be rated TV-MA.

“It’s our first TV-MA show, so it’s a little on the grittier side for Marvel,” executive producer Brad Winderbaum recently told members of the press at the trailer event for Echo. “And I think again, shows kind of the breadth of what Marvel’s capable of. And certainly something, again, if you know the comics and know the history, it feels very in line, but is kind of a new direction for the brand, especially on Disney+. And to that end, it’s going to be, for many reasons, going to be simultaneously released on Disney+ and Hulu.”

“We wanted very adamantly to show that these are people in our show,” Freeland explained. “They bleed, they die, they get killed, and there are real-world consequences. And again, talking, it’s not the fate of the universe at stake because I think once you go that broad, you can sort of lose sight a little bit. And so that kind of dictated the tone a little bit.”

Echo is being released on Disney+ and Hulu on January 10th. The show will leave Hulu on April 9th.

The 2021 series introduced Maya Lopez/Echo (Alaqua Cox) and focused on her relationship with her “uncle,” Wilson Fisk/Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio). D’Onofrio’s Kingpin was first introduced in Netflix’s Daredevil series alongside Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock/Daredevil. It’s been confirmed that both actors will appear in Echo ahead of their own reboot, Daredevil: Born Againwhich recently had some shakeupsComicBook.com attended a trailer event for Echo, and director and executive producer Sydney Freeland confirmed that Echo is a villain, and teased a showdown with Daredevil.

“I dunno if I can say this, but I love the Netflix Daredevil, it’s great,” Freeland shared when asked if the intent of Echo was to follow the Defenderverse.

What Is Echo About?

You can read Marvel Studios’ description of Echo here: “Marvel Studios presents Echo in which Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) struggles to reconnect with her Native American roots while balancing aspirations tied to a life of crime as successor to the brutal legacy of Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) aka Kingpin. In the first episode we are introduced to Maya Lopez and her struggles,” the synopsis reads.

In addition to Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez/Echo and Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, the cast of Echo includes Chaske Spencer as Henry, Tantoo Cardinal as Chula, Graham Greene as Skully, Cody Lightning as Cousin Biscuits, Charlie Cox as Daredevil, Devery Jacobs as Bonnie, and Zahn McClarnon as William Lopez.

Echo is being released on Disney+ and Hulu on January 10. The show will leave Hulu on April 9th.

As it turns out, Marvel Studios may not be having that great of a time. A new trade report broke Wednesday morning, revealing a directionless studio left wondering what its next step is after the legal troubles of the franchise’s next leading man mixed with a few box office misfires to craft a foul potion. Should the trade reporting be believed, the easiest course correction is something many fans have clamored after for years, something that could right the Marvel ship in the blink of an eye. Get this: all Marvel has to do is restart the DefendersVerse, and the masses will rejoice.

From Daredevil to Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and yes, even Iron Fist, the shows a part of the DefendersVerse remain some of Marvel’s most inventive storytelling yet. Far removed from anything in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the tone of the DefendersVerse is one Marvel Studios has yet to replicate. It’s something older audiences, the ones paying for the subscription services, desire.

It’s also a tone much more budget-friendly to create. Put the multiversal shenanigans aside and craft a broody, small-scale character study. Put more effort on practical effects and martial arts and rely less on visual effects and post-production. It’s that small budget charm that transformed characters like Daredevil and Jessica Jones into some of the most popular in the Marvel stable and it’s that magic that’s been sorely missing from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

With the right ingredients, a revival of the DefendersVerse could be the recipe of Marvel Studios’ future success. Now that the studio is changing how it does television, not everything needs an Avengers-level budget and reshot into oblivion on sound stages. Bring back the DefendersVerse and see a better MCU blossom.

With many changes afoot for Daredevil: Born Again, one of the show’s leads has decided to leave social media behind. Over the weekend, Marvel favorite Vincent D’Onofrio deleted his account on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. According to a thread shared by the Full Metal Jacket alumnus, it was a decision he’d been mulling over for quite a while.

“So everyone i’m going to leave X. I’m going to leave very soon,” D’Onofrio shared on the service (via The Direct). “To my amazing and loyal followers: You know I have been contemplating this for a long while. Today is the day.  I leave you for now with much love to you all.”

The actor then deleted his account from the service entirely. In follow-up posts, D’Onofrio shared he’s also thinking about deleting his Instagram profile as well.

“Don’t think I’m going to be spending anytime on any platform.  Feeling like leaving Instagram today as well. I’ll come back soon or maybe later. I don’t know. Maybe with a brand new account,” he added. “I wrote this once: ‘Time stops when I’m with you. Airplanes halt in the sky.  The three children still, hands raised to a ball stuck hanging in the air. All others disappear and you and I at a table in a meadow somewhere in the world embraced in conversation and lust.  We lived there. I’m there still I believe. I believe that time stopped when I was with you.'”

As of this writing, D’Onofrio’s account is still active on Instagram albeit private, meaning he and his team have to approve anyone that requests to follow him.

Steven DeKnight has been increasingly candid about his relationship with Marvel now that he no longer writes Daredevil. Monday afternoon, the writer took to X—the social platform formerly known as Twitter—to throw some shade at Marvel Studios’ lack of traditional television staff. Responding to fans, DeKnight revealed excitement now that Marvel Studios has revealed it plans to alter its television output to mirror that of more classical TV.

“I am not happy the show is scrapped and have consistently stated the opposite,” DeKnight said on the microblogging service. “However I AM delighted that they finally realized you need an actual showrunner who’s a writer to make a series work.”

https://twitter.com/stevendeknight/status/1714009490109116923?s=20

Why is Marvel Studios changing its television structure?

Previously, the Kevin Feige-led outfit only had “head writers” compared to showrunners. While showrunners traditionally serve as the singular boss on a given series, Marvel Studios’ lead writer simply led the writer’s room and left much of the executive producing duties to Marvel Studios and its creative parliament. Now, the studio says it now plans to introduce showrunners into the mix.

Earlier this month, Marvel’s head of streaming Brad Winderbaum said, “It’s a term we’ve not only grown comfortable with but also learned to embrace… We need executives that are dedicated to this medium, that are going to focus on streaming, focus on television, because they are two different forms.”

“We’re trying to marry the Marvel culture with the traditional television culture,” Winderbaum added elsewhere in the piece. “It comes down to, ‘How can we tell stories in television that honor what’s so great about the source material?'”

Netflix Daredevil showrunner Steven DeKnight says that Daredevil: Born Again is an “old Disney scam.” On Twitter, the showrunner acknowledged a fan post that pointed out a trend of Disney “rebooting” shows. Basically, in the IATSE ranks and elsewhere, workers have a mandated pay raise and vacation pay when a show makes it to Season 3. Social media users have discovered that at Disney and other studios, shows often get cancelled or rebooted before that third season. Online, critics argue that this is basically used by companies to get away with not paying workers that increased rate and to avoid those other benefits. DeKnight saw the post and basically nodded his head at the accusation and argued that current negotiations should get rid of those provisions entirely.

On Twitter, DeKnight said, “He does. It’s an old Disney scam where they slightly rename a series to reset contract terms back to first season. Needs to be addressed by all the guilds/unions and crushed!”

The account, IATSE STRIKE!, has pointed out how popular Disney Channel sitcoms have had this pattern emerge multiple times on shows like The Suite Life of Zach and Cody. Other users chimed-in with high-profile examples. It feels like parts of the Daredevil crew feel like something similar is going on here.

Daredevil: Born Again Delayed By Disney

daredevil-born-again-set-photos-courhouse-nyc-matt-murdock.jpg

As the writers strike and actors strikes stretch onward, Disney made the choice to delay a lot of their popular MCU series. While The Marvels is still going to get its day in theaters come November. Likewise, Loki Season 2 is now slated for an early October release in primetime on Disney+. But, some shows that people thought they were absolutely going to see this year or early next year have been thrown into question. Daredevil: Born Again leads the pack. But, Agatha, The Darkhold Diaries and Ironheart now have been pushed back by the changes. Echo, which was supposed to hit Disney+ in the winter of 2023 now has been pushed back as well. Some of these projects won’t see the light of day until 2025 at this rate because there’s just too much stuff to release at this current moment.

Adding to some of the fans frustrations are delays for highly-anticipated movies like Deadpool 3 and Captain America: Brave New World. Bot of those Marvel Studios movies are projected to be heavy-hitters for the franchise. It’s been a long time since either a Captain America movie or a Deadpool graced theaters. They were both filming or in active production when the writers and actors strikes occured. Observers have noted that without a quick resolution to these work stoppages, the chances of both hitting in 2024 has been thrown into question as well. So, there’s a lot that could be rectified when the studios come back to the table this week.

Familiar Faces Not Returning For Daredevil: Born Again

daredevil-karen-page.jpg
d

A couple of familiar faces are going to be back in the fold for Daredevil: Born Again. But, there are a lot of people who worked on those shows who won’t be around. Longtime stunt double for Charlie Cox, Chris Brewster won’t be there for the Disney+ revival. On an episode of Ikuzo Unscripted the actor argued that Marvel didn’t listen to Cox’s request for his old stunt double to return. Brewster would also argue that Disney was “ruining the character” based on Daredevil’s brief appearance in She-Hulk. So, a lot of the old guard from the Netflix days were not asked to come back for Born Again and it’s causing some anxiety among the fanbase.

“But ultimately with Born Again, I had no doubt that they were going to reach out to me. Charlie specifically requests me on everything, and he always goes out of his way, and fights for me to be there,” Brewster said during that show appearance. “And he asked them over and over to bring me in, and I never even got a phone call. Ironically, nobody that worked on Seasons 1, 2, or 3 went back.”

Sunday, Charlie Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, and Krysten Ritter took a break at GalaxyCon Austin to take a snapshot together.

D’Onofrio shared a photo of the three to his Instagram profile of both he and Cox striking a goofy pose while Ritter stands close by with a smile.

Is Jessica Jones coming back?

Slowly but surely, Marvel Studios is bringing those who appeared in Netflix’s DefendersVerse to the main MCU. Both Cox and D’Onofrio have since returned, and there are rumors Jon Bernthal’s The Punisher will also be back before long as well. When it comes to Jones, however, things have been pretty silent. That said, Ritter has expressed much desire to return as the private investigator.

“I have no idea. I hope so,” Ritter previously said on Michael Rosebaum’s Inside of You podcast. “I think that people love Jessica. I know it because I live it. Honestly, I don’t know. Marvel, they’re so secretive. I don’t know. I’m just putting it out there that, of course, I would be there in a second. I’d have my boots and jacket on, ready to rock.”

While it has yet to be seen if Jones will appear in the MCU, she’s the first of Marvel’s street-level characters featured in a new series of prose novels launching next year.

“We are always looking for new ways to tell stories about Marvel’s beloved superheroes, and working with Hyperion Avenue on the Marvel Crime novels will showcase these characters in an exciting new light,” Sven Larsen, VP of licensed publishing at Marvel said in a statement released last month. “We know that lifelong Marvel fans and crime fiction enthusiasts alike will enjoy this inventive new series.”

At the beginning of May, the Writers Guild of America went on strike. This week, the actor’s guild SAG-AFTRA also went on strike. Now, tensions are high between studios and creatives, and people are revealing some surprising truths about the industry. A big point of contention for writers and actors is residuals, which have become nearly nonexistent in the age of streaming. Recently, writer Cody Zigler took to Twitter to reveal that the residual check he got for writing one episode of She-Hulk: Attorney At Law was only $396. Zigler was a staff writer on the show who was credited for writing “Ribbit and Rip It,” otherwise known as the Daredevil episode. Zigler’s tweet prompted a response from Steven DeKnight, who served as the showrunner of Netflix’s Daredevil series.

“So speaking of Daredevil, as showrunner of S1, part of my deal includes a little sliver of the backend. Never expected to see any on Netflix. But then Marvel/Disney pulled it and it ended up on Disney +. Now I’m part of an audit to try to get the money they owe me and others,” DeKnight wrote. “And here’s the thing about auditing to get what’s owed to you: YOU have to pay for it (divided up among the backend participants). The last time I had to do this, it cost me alone 17K and took over two years.”

He added, “Entertainment Corporations will do ANYTHING to keep from paying you what you’re contractually owed.” You can check out the tweet thread below:

SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher Slams Disney CEO Bob Iger:

The Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger recently said that the strike is “not realistic,” calling it “disturbing” and claiming it will have a “very, very damaging effect on the whole business.” Yesterday, SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher spoke out against Iger during an interview with Variety while on the strike picket lines.

“I found them terribly repugnant and out of touch. Positively tone deaf,” Drescher said of Iger’s comments. “I don’t think it served him well. If I were that company, I would lock him behind doors and never let him talk to anybody about this, because it’s so obvious that he has no clue as to what is really happening on the ground with hard-working people that don’t make anywhere near the salary he is making. High seven figures, eight figures, this is crazy money that they make, and they don’t care if they’re land barons of a medieval time.”

Daredevil star Charlie Cox knows a thing or two about the Marvel universe. The actor made an appearance at ICCCon in Nashville in late May where participated in a panel hosted by ComicBook.com and Phase Zero. Afterwards, Cox joined Phase Zero‘s channel for a couple rounds of Heads Up, with the first round now being published. For those unfamiliar, Heads Up is a game where words or names are shown on a player’s forehead while the other provides clues about what the word is without saying it. The goal is for the pair of players to have as many words guessed as possible in one minute. Cox does quite well at the game.

For an added twist, the round of Heads Up features only Marvel characters. Ranging from Loki to Silver Surfer or even Daredevil just for Cox to have some fun with, the cards playfully quiz the knowledge of the players. With Phase Zero host Brandon Davis, Cox starts out hot on his guesses before getting thrown off by a Guardians of the Galaxy character. The video has been published to the Phase Zero channel on YouTube, with Part 2 where the roles of describing and guessing are reversed coming soon.

There was once a time Vincent D’Onofrio avoided the convention circuit or, at the very least, was reluctant to partake in one of the get-togethers. After thinking of himself as anti-social or even “socially inept” as the actor puts it, D’Onofrio says his viewpoint on attending the events changed completely after a chance encounter at an appearance a few years ago. Now it seems as if he can’t get enough of the world of conventions. Earlier this month, the Daredevil: Born Again star appeared at Calgary Expo and in just a matter of a few weeks, he’s set to appear at ICCCon in Nashville alongside Daredevil costar Charlie Cox.

“The very last one I did several years ago, I had an experience where a woman was by herself and she came up and talked to me about her father who was not doing well,” the actor recalls. “She was up at the table with me for an autograph and I said, ‘Well, why don’t we FaceTime him?’ We FaceTimed him and I got to speak to this guy and I talked to him for 10 minutes.”

As it turns out, the fan was a major believer in D’Onofrio’s smaller roles adding, “He told me some things that were quite something about the little parts that I played. Not any of the big roles that I played, but there were some small parts that I played throughout my career that he just thought were so moving. The fact that I would do these small parts and put my all into them, and it’s not something that I think of on a daily basis. I don’t think of that guy who’s in the hospital and he enjoyed my Thor in Adventures in Babysitting or my Orson Welles and Ed Wood or things like that. I’ve done so many parts like that, little ones.”

Because of that, the Daredevil star tries interacting with whatever fans he can.

“Sometimes people have zero to say, they just want the autograph because it’s that piece that they’ve had for a while and they’ve always wanted signed or something. Some people want to actually just meet you and talk to you about something, and some of them don’t even have things they need to sign or even don’t even want a photo. They just want to tell me something about one of my performances,” D’Onofrio concludes. “And Adam, it’s not just a few. And that’s what’s so incredible about it. It’s a lot of people. And just after all these years, it’s like 40 years now or something that I’ve been working, I forgot about all that. I totally forgot about it.”

We spoke to D’Onofrio in support of his upcoming book Pigs Can’t Look Up, due out wherever books are sold on May 16th.

When is the Daredevil reboot coming out?

Daredevil: Born Again is expected to drop Spring 2024. The first three seasons of Daredevil and The Defenders limited series can now be seen on Disney+.
